During his initial appearances in Naruto as a young shinobi under the tutelage of Minato Namikaze, Obito Uchiha harbored dreams of becoming Hokage, much like Naruto himself. The pair had many parallels in terms of their personalities, ideals, and the internal dynamics of the three-man squads they were part of. Where Obito always played second fiddle to the genius of Kakashi Hatake, Naruto endured a similar fate with Sasuke, who was a natural prodigy of the Uchiha clan. Obito was also helplessly in love with his teammate Rin Nohara, and Naruto expressed a similar admiration for Sakura Haruno at first, although he did not let it consume him as Obito did.

All this changed for Obito during the Battle of Kannabi Bridge in the Third Shinobi World War, where half of his body was crushed in a collapsing cavern, and he was forced to accept his fate. Little did he know that it would only be the beginning of his journey, as Obito was rescued by an elderly Madara Uchiha, who nursed him back to health and manipulated a series of circumstances that led to Obito becoming his successor in his bid to realize the Eye of the Moon Plan in Naruto. Over this time, Madara also trained Obito to realize his full potential, where the younger Uchiha became an incredibly powerful shinobi rivaling even his mentor.

The Ghost Of The Uchiha

Old Madara Obito Naruto

After his supposed death during his earth-shattering battle against Hashirama Senju at the Valley of the End, Madara’s Sharingan activated his Izanagi, which he had programmed in case of his demise, bringing him back to life. He then proceeded to use the small amount of Hashirama’s flesh he had managed to acquire during the fight to heal his injuries and went into hiding for decades. Near the end of his life, Madara finally manifested the Rinnegan due to the combination of Indra’s and Asura’s chakra that he had produced by transplanting Hashirama’s flesh into his body.

Proceeding to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, Madara used the remaining samples of Hashirama’s DNA to cultivate a mindless clone of his old rival on the statue. He planned to use this clone to create an army of White Zetsu in preparation for his final scheme to reshape the world as he saw fit. This idea was based on the text he read on the Uchiha Stone Tablet, which spoke of the Infinite Tsukuyomi, which was the ultimate genjutsu, capable of subjugating an entire planet for all eternity.

Unfortunately for Madara, his plans had taken much longer to reach fruition than he initially anticipated, and he soon grasped that he was in need of someone who would carry on his will after his death. To do so, he transplanted his own Rinnegan into a young Nagato, in the hopes that he would revive him when the time was right. However, Madara also realized that he needed an agent to guide Nagato to revive him, which was when Obito entered the picture.

Guiding A Worthy Successor

Kakashi kills Rin with his Chidori

Having monitored Konohagakure for shinobi worthy of succeeding him in his mission, Madara connected himself to the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to prolong his lifespan just enough to impart his knowledge to one he deemed worthy. On finding a young Obito near death after the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, a White Zetsu brought him back to the Mountains Graveyard under Madara’s orders. The elder Uchiha treated Obito’s wounds with Hashirama’s cells, and also placed a Forbidden Individual Curse Tag on his heart as insurance against Obito betraying him.

When he awoke, Obito trained and made a full recovery in a fairly short period. In this time, he was subjected to Madara’s pessimistic declarations about the shinobi world, but refused to heed them as he still cared about his friends. Seeing Obito’s idealistic worldview, Madara set out to twist it to meet his own desires, and orchestrated an event that would break Obito’s mind and spirit, such that he would submit to any of Madara’s demands. Madara arranged for Kirigakure shinobi to kidnap Rin — who Obito was in love with — and seal the Three Tails inside of her, so that she would become a ticking time bomb to wreak havoc on Konohagakure if taken back to the village.

He then informed Obito that Kakashi and Rin were in danger, and the young Uchiha rushed to aid his friends. Upon arriving, Obito saw Rin impale herself on Kakashi’s Lightning Cutter, as she did not want to destroy her village. This sent Obito into a blind rage and awakened his Mangekyo Sharingan, and he slaughtered the Kirigakure shinobi using the Wood Release he had gained while encased inside the Zetsu known as Tobi. With nothing left to live for, Obito returned to Madara and pledged his life to him.

The One To Fulfill The Eye Of The Moon Plan

Obito Madara War Naruto

Now that Madara had successfully turned Obito over to his side, he was faced with the task of training his successor to become a shinobi capable of carrying his mantle until the time was right. He was aided by the powerful Mangekyo Sharingan kekkei genkai ability that Obito had manifested in the form of Kamui, which gave him the power of intangibility and teleportation to and from Kamui’s dimension. Under Madara’s expert tutelage, the young Uchiha proved himself to be a late bloomer, reaching incredible heights that were nearly on par with his mentor.

This is evidenced in some of Obito’s later battles against Minato Namikaze, Konan of the Akatsuki, and the Allied Shinobi Forces in the Fourth Shinobi World War, where he took on jinchuriki such as Killer B and Naruto without too much trouble. In fact, when looking at these feats, it might not be too much of a stretch to place Obito among the most talented and fearsome shinobi of his generation in Naruto.

He was also able to move in the shadows of the shinobi world and manipulate major figures such as the Fourth Mizukage and Nagato, later known as Pain, attesting to his caliber as a keen strategist. Finally, on seeing how Obito had mastered everything he needed to learn under his mentorship, Madara finally disconnected himself from the Demon Statue of the Outer Path, and bequeathed his own name to Obito, which he would carry until the Madara was revived again.
