The Minato one-shot revealed quite a lot of interesting stuff to the fans about both Minato and Kushina Uzumaki. These two characters were at the heart of the one shot and fans saw their characters progress tremendously in this side story. At the same time, the manga also focused quite a bit on the Third Great Ninja War, given that this was the time period where it was set.
The story opened with the Third Great Ninja War and then continued to throw light on the state of affairs between the Five Nations during this time. While the war itself was not the main focus of the story, it was certainly refreshing to see Kishimoto touch upon the various wars that he could not explore fully in the original manga.
The Third Great Ninja War In The Manga
The Third Great Ninja War was a massive event in the original manga, however, Kishimoto did not throw too much focus on it, given that it took place over 10 years before the beginning of the story. While the Fourth Great Ninja War was shown in great detail, the Third Great Ninja War had already concluded which meant that fans only got to see glimpses of it through flashbacks and backstories and, sometimes, through the mouths of other characters. The Third Great Ninja War took place due to a decline in the power of the five nations.
Across their borders, several small fights were observed and these fights eventually led to bigger battles that resulted in large-scale wars. As already established, the power of the Five Nations was declining at this point which meant there were not enough resources or manpower to fund this war. This meant that children as young as Academy graduates were eventually sent to the battlefield and countless lives were lost. In the manga, fans got to see several clashes in the Third GreatNinja War, such as the fight between Minato and Ay, and also the clash between Team Minato and the Iwagakure Shinobi, which ultimately resulted in the birth of Kakashi of the Sharingan.
As fans know, Obito’s “death” also took place in the Third Great Ninja War and his descent into madness also happened here. Quite a lot of events took place in this war and ultimately, it was Minato who was primarily responsible for ending it, which eventually earned him the position of Hokage of Konoha, and deservedly so.
Minato In The Third Great Ninja War
When it comes to Minato Namikaze, fans got to see quite a lot of him in the Third Great Ninja War in the original manga. The very first glimpse that fans got of him came through Kakashi and his flashback that detailed the birth of Kakashi’s Sharingan legends. At this point, Kakashi was already a Jonin and under Minato, as the group were on a very important mission, which was to destroy Kannabi Bridge. It was the destruction of this bridge that ended up turning the tides of the war in Konoha’s favor, however, the mission was incredibly difficult to begin with.
Kakashi led Team Minato at one point and this resulted in Rin getting kidnapped and, eventually, Obito dying – presumably. Later on, Minato took on a whole battalion of Shinobi alone and managed to defeat every single one of them. He single-handedly turned the tides of the war in Konaha’s favor and the destruction of Kannabi Bridge was also successful. A run at sight was ordered for Minato and every single Shinobi of Iwagakure was absolutely terrified of him at this point. However, what many fans may not know is that this point in the war was actually much later and, thanks to the Minato one shot, fans got to see events prior to Minato leading his own team, and fans are certainly very thankful for that.
A New Fight In The Minato One Shot
The Minato one shot took place in an era when the third Great ninja war had just broken out. At this point in time, Minato was still a member of Team Jiraiya and had his two other teammates with him. The two were seen on the battlefield at the very beginning of the one-shot where they ended up fighting against Iwagakure Shinobi.
Minato ended up on the front lines in a clash against two Jinchuriki, both of which are characters that fans have seen in the original manga. These characters were Roshi and Han. Fans would remember Roshi to be the Jinchuriki of the Four Tails, Son Goku. Meanwhile, Han was the Jinchuriki of the Five Tails, Kukuo, in the original story. Both these characters were seen fighting with great zeal in the Minato one shot.
In fact, much to the surprise of the fans, these two characters held the upper hand in the battle and forced a retreat from Team Jiraiya. Despite Jiraiya and Minato being on the team, they had to retreat against two Jinchuriki, however, it must be said that, at this point, Minato had not reached his pinnacle. Nonetheless, fans got to see both Roshi and Han utilize the power of their Tailed Beast to the fullest. It was actually surprising for many to see them utilize a near-perfect Tailed Beast Transformation. They could manifest a chakra avatar of their Tailed Beast’s head around their bodies and even used Tailed Beast Balls, which suggests that they had some degree of control over their beasts. It was using these attacks that forced a retreat out of Minato and the group, who escaped thanks to the Flying Thunder God Jutsu.
The Result Of The Fight
The Minato one shot saw Team Jiraiya retreat in their clash against the Iwagakure Jinchuriki duo. Soon after, this group was sent back to Konoha to report on the events and that is precisely where the vast majority of the one shot later takes place. While Minato and the group retreated from the battle, it proved to be valuable for the future Fourth Hokage as he managed to observe a Tailed Beast Ball and base a jutsu around it. In his training with Jiraiya, Minato was trying to perfect his very own technique and at the end of it, he successfully managed to do so.
During his conversation with Kushina, Minato revealed that he was creating this jutsu to pass it on to her so that she could protect herself, if the war led to Jinchuriki Warfare. Thanks to his clash against Iwagakure Jinchuriki, Minato was able to create the iconic technique which Kushina later named to be the Rasengan. Fans also saw Minato use the Rasengan against a Tailed Beast in the one shot, when he fought against Kurama with Kushina’s help inside her body. The strength of the Rasengan was tested to the fullest when it managed to stop a Tailed Beast Ball and thus, a legend was born. This technique was then passed on to Jiraiya who then passed it onto Minato and Kushina’s son, as a memento of his parents.
