The Minato One Shot spin-off manga was released quite recently and it did a phenomenal job of adding characterization to both Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki primarily. There are other characters who were also focused on in the manga, however, these two were the crux of this spin-off, and that shouldn’t be a surprise to any fan, given their special relationship.

Before the Minato spin-off was even released, Kishimoto made it clear that the manga would focus primarily on the creation of Minato’s jutsu. While many were wondering whether this would be the Flying Thunder God or the Rasengan, the answer was quite clear as only the latter was created by him originally. The Rasengan itself had a lot of importance attached to it in the Minato one shot and the exact reason for its creation was also revealed to the fans.

Minato Vs Roshi And Han

At the very beginning of the Minato One Shot, fans were able to see a glimpse of the Third Great Ninja War at a time when Minato was not yet leading his own team. Instead, he was seen as a member of Team Jiraiya with two other members, all fighting against two powerful Jinchuriki of Iwagakure. Both of these Jinchuriki are characters that fans are very well familiar with, being Roshi and Han, the Jinchuriki of the Four and Five Tails respectively. It appears that the three of them struggled quite greatly in combat against these two Jinchuriki and, at the end of it, the Iwagakure duo prepared two powerful Tailed Beast Balls to launch their way in an attempt to decimate them.

Thankfully, Minato had his Flying Thunder God technique to teleport them to safety and that is exactly what he used. The Minato one shot didn’t keep the entire story on the battlefields. Minato and his team soon moved back to Konoha, which also does an incredible job and showcasing the fact that the Third Great Ninja War actually went on for years and the likes of the shinobi went back to their respective villages every now and then to report an embark on different missions all the while being engaged in a large scale war. In the case of Minato, he walked out of the battlefield with some very incredible information. Upon watching Roshi and Han, he ended up with a basis for a very powerful technique that later on became his signature jutsu, the Rasengan.

Upon witnessing the two Jinchuriki create powerful Tailed Beast Balls, Minato tried to replicate this jutsu by himself. Instead of mixing the positive chakra with the negative chakra that is needed to create a powerful Tailed Beast Ball, Minato relied on the rotation of chakra instead to create a giant spiraling vortex of chakra in his hand. Initially, he struggled quite a lot with this, however, thanks to Jiraiya, he came up with the idea of rotating chakra in two different directions to give the jutsu more stability and that is precisely what helped the Rasengan take shape.

This was, according to Jiraiya, only the first step in creating Minato’s very own jutsu. Naruto fans will remember that the Rasengan in itself was not supposed to be a complete jutsu. This is because Minato was originally supposed to add nature transformation to it in an attempt to create a more powerful technique, which is what Naruto ended up doing with the Rasenshuriken. Nonetheless, Minato did indeed create a very iconic Jutsu that would end up becoming Naruto’s very own in the future. At the same time, this section of the chapter highlighted the genius of Minato Namikaze and how much of a brilliant shinobi he truly was, being regarded as a once-in-a-generation type of talent by Jiraiya.

Why The Rasegan Was Created

The Minato one shot was a perfect mix of high-octane action and eventful story writing. Through Kushina, the one-shot explored the dynamic of these two characters quite a lot, especially when she was taken over by the Nine Tails. The two combine their forces to fight the beast and contain its powers.

Initially, Minato used his Sealing Jutsu that he had learned from Kushina to reinforce her seal and when that didn’t work, he found a piece of his chakra within her body. From the inside, he fought against the Nine Tails along with Kushina and, together, they managed to subdue the beast.

This is precisely what Minato created the Rasengan for. According to him, the Rasengan was meant to be a jutsu to be passed on to Kushina so that she could protect herself against the powerful Jinchuriki of the other villages that he fought against in the Third Great Ninja War. Minato believed that it was only a matter of time before the Third Great Ninja War resulted in Jinchuriki Warfare and, in that case, he wanted to pass on a technique to Kushina that resonated with her own chakra and helped her defend herself.

Essentially, the Rasengan was created to protect Kushina Uzumaki and that is a very beautiful touch by Kishimoto which only makes the relationship between these two characters even more special. What gives it even more meaning is that, moments later, the two combined to stop the Nine Tails together and Minato used the technique that he created to protect her to defeat the Nine Tails from the inside. This also ends up being the incredible moment of confession of feelings to one another for these two characters and, from there onwards, the greatest couple in Naruto history is born.

A Memento To Naruto Uzumaki

Minato and Naruto

What makes the creation of this Jutsu even more special is the fact that this technique ended up being passed down to the Orange Hokage of Konoha. As Naruto put it in the original series, when the Yellow Flash and the Red Hot Habanero combine, they give rise to the Orange Hokage of Konoha, and given that this jutsu was created by his father and named by his mother, it was later passed down to Naruto Uzumaki as a memento from the both of them. The Rasengan would then become a jutsu to protect Naruto Uzumaki and he inherited this technique from his godfather, Jiraiya.

On the day of Naruto’s birth, he received quite a lot from his parents. They sacrificed their lives for him and Kushina especially gave everything that she had just so she could protect him, even when the odds were against her. Minato made sure to seal both hers and his own chakra inside of Naruto so that when the time comes, they could meet, however, that certainly was not all. Minato also inadvertently ensured that the Rasengan would be eventually passed on to Naruto, as he had Jiraiya learn this technique as well. Through Jiraiya, Naruto ended up learning the technique that was created by his father and named by his mother and the fact that it goes on to become Naruto’s signature technique later on is simply beautiful story writing.
