Naruto is a series that is no stranger to extremely powerful characters who can bring down entire countries on their own. With the power to topple empires, many have left an indelible mark on the franchise simply due to how strong they were or how no one else in their eras could ever hope to even match them. Hashirama, the First Hokage of Konohagakure, was one such character.

Though his initial mentions and appearances within the franchise were less than spectacular and made many fans think that he was just another throwaway character who didn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, Naruto: Shippuden went on to show just how powerful and important to the overall narrative of the franchise Hashirama truly was. Who Was Hashirama?

Hashirama Senju is one of the most legendary figures in the entire history of Naruto. Born during the Warring States Period, all he knew from a young age was that he had to fight and hate the rivals of the Senju clan: the Uchiha. Although he spent much of his youth fighting against his enemies, he eventually met Madara and the two formed a close friendship that would define their respective journeys over the years.

Despite not knowing about it initially, the two would eventually find out about each other’s clans, which would become the sole reason why their friendship ended for a time. As they grew older, they eventually became the heads of their respective clans, often meeting one another on the battlefield, where the fights would always end in a stalemate due to Madara’s inability to match his rival and Hashirama’s unwillingness to kill someone he considered to be his best friend.

Ultimately, after years of fighting, Hashirama proposed a truce between the two warring clans, which Madara eventually accepted, rekindling their old friendship and putting an end to the war. With their pasts behind them, the two would create the Hidden Leaf Village, Konohagakure, to serve as a home for both their clans to live together peacefully.

However, their ideas on maintaining peace were vastly different. Where Hashirama thought peace was to be achieved through the cooperation and effort of the people, Madara felt that they needed to control the peace. This would eventually cause Madara to break away from Konoha and become its number one enemy, attacking it on multiple occasions with the Nine Tailed Fox. Eventually, the two childhood friends would meet in battle one final time, where Hashirama was forced to kill Madara after spending most of the fight trying to convince him to reason.

The God Of Shinobi

Hashirama deserved all the hype he got as the ‘God of Shinobi’ due to his unmatched prowess as a fighter and leader. To know just how strong he was, the caliber of his enemies should also be weighed, since it gives a good reading as to what Hashirama himself was capable of on the battlefield in order to defeat them. The one foe of his that comes to mind is Madara Uchiha.

Madara is often touted as being one of the strongest and most important shinobi in the history of Naruto. He was incredibly powerful in his own right, but he openly admitted his inferiority when comparing himself to his best friend, even when he had the Nine Tails and the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan. Kabuto even admitted that Hashirama was so strong that he was often compared to the Sage of the Six Paths, and that no one other than Madara ever came close to his strength.

Hashirama was the reincarnation of Asura Otsutsuki, the last one before the birth of Naruto Uzumaki, which bolstered his already incredible Chakra reserves that were so great that he was able to create shockwaves from them. After Naruto distributed his and the Nine Tails’ Chakra to the Allied Forces during the Fourth Great Shinobi World War, Hashirama remarked that the totality of it almost rivaled his own!

He was also very proficient in using all 5 Elemental Release techniques, which is something only the very best shinobi are ever capable of achieving. However, his use of Wood Release, brought about by using Earth and Water Release together, is his most famous and powerful, as he was able to sprout massive trees from the ground and even form some of the biggest structures ever seen in the entire Naruto franchise with this wood.

All other instances of Wood Release have been incredibly shallow in comparison to what Hashirama was shown to achieve. This ability was quite varied as well, as he could spawn trees whose pollen could make people go to sleep, defensive structures strong enough to withstand Tailed Beast Balls, or even structures that could compete with Madara’s complete Susanoo.

Hashirama’s senjutsu was also some of the best that has ever been seen in the series, allowing him to go Sage Mode while simultaneously using Wood Release. He could even create seals in this mode that worked against beings as large and powerful as the Ten Tails. All of this just goes to show how much of an incredible shinobi Hashirama was and why he deserves all the hype that he gets!
