Counted among the strongest shinobi in history and the only one who could compete with Hashirama Senju in his time, Madara Uchiha was the head of the Uchiha clan at the conclusion of the Warring States Period in Naruto, and one of the founders of Konohagakure. Since their childhood friendship, Madara and Hashirama had always harbored dreams of peace, and realizing this shared aspiration was the main reason behind their alliance to create the village. In doing so they, laid the foundation of the hidden village system that would later be adopted by all the Five Great Shinobi Countries in Naruto.

A legendary leader of the Uchiha clan, Madara worked tirelessly to improve the clan’s standing both before and after their integration into Konohagakure’s structure. Despite his efforts, there was a lot of ill will between the rival Senju and Uchiha clans, stemming from the time they spent fighting against each other. While some members of both clans were able to make amends, many failed and succumbed to their hatred. In time, the Senju organically began to assert more control over the village’s administration, spearheaded by Hashirama’s growing reputation. This and a host of other reasons prompted Madara to leave the village, his clan, and his dream of peace, electing to fight the Senju and his old rival.

Grieving His Brother’s Loss

Madara And Izuna Uchiha Naruto

Towards the end of the Warring States Period, both Madara and his younger brother Izuna had both awakened their Mangekyo Sharingan, achieving levels of power that few other Uchiha clan members had ascended to. A consequence of losing so many of their comrades, family members, and allies in battle, the Mangekyo was an ability fueled by grief and sorrow, and the power it granted was beyond the grasp of average shinobi.

Even with its boost in power, the pair could not defeat Hashirama, who also could not bring himself to kill his childhood friend. Sadly, as the fighting between the rival Senju and Uchiha clans intensified, Izuna was killed by Tobirama Senju, the younger brother of Hashirama. On seeing this, Hashirama tried to broker peace between the two clans, with offers that enticed many Uchiha. Madara continually refused as he sought to avenge his younger brother, who was the only family he had left at the time.

He took Izuna’s eyes and gained the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan — eyes that would never deteriorate from use like the traditional Mangekyo Sharingan kekkei genkai. Using this power, he made one final assault on the Senju, only to be comprehensively defeated and forced to surrender. Surrounded and outnumbered, Madara refused to give in, until Hashirama, as a token of good will, offered to give his own life in exchange for the fighting to cease. Moved by this gesture, Madara agreed to give up his hatred and join forces with the Senju.

The Senju’s Domination

Hashirama and Madara

For a time, there was peace between the two rival clans, as they allied to form the village of Konohagakure. The merger also included their allies, bringing a host of warring factions together under the village’s common banner. Madara himself was responsible for naming the village, while Hashirama laid the groundwork for most of its infrastructure and architecture, using his Wood Release kekkei genkai. This was to be a place where children would not have to spend their lives on the battlefield, which was one of the fundamental beliefs that Madara and Hashirama shared from their childhood friendship.

Unfortunately, this break in the conflict would be short-lived, as Hashirama’s views on peace differed greatly from Madara’s own. Where Hashirama sought to broker alliances for cooperation between the villages, Madara took an approach based on ruthlessly exerting power to control other villages and nations. This could be seen in how he intimidated Lord Mu, the Second Tsuchikage, and Onoki, his student, as a means of ensuring that they would submit to Konohagakure.

Internally, the election of Hashirama as the First Hokage, and the growing prominence of the Senju in the village’s affairs fueled Madara’s fears of his clan becoming subservient to their authority in Konohagakure’s hierarchy. Despite Tobirama’s insistence that the role be filled through a democratic election, Madara feared that the position of Hokage would cement the Senju’s control over the village, making it an extension of the clan’s power rather than an institution for the good of the village. Moreover, he could never shake the feeling that he was dishonoring his brother by working alongside the Senju, which laid the seeds for his eventual defection.

The Curse Of Hatred

Hashirama vs Madara Valley of the End

With his pride resurgent and once again fearing for the safety of his clan, Madara abandoned the earlier vision he shared with Hashirama of the Senju and Uchiha living in peace. He refused to listen to Hashirama’s pleas, as the First Hokage wanted him to work as his right hand to strengthen village’s position, and eventually succeed him as the Second Hokage. Madara saw through this and believed that it was all but certain that Tobirama would become the Second Hokage — an event that would negatively affect the Uchiha’s standing in the village.

Madara had also been deciphering the Uchiha Stone Tablet which was altered by Black Zetsu after Kaguya’s demise, and through it, he learned of the unending cycle of hatred between the Uchiha and Senju. He also found out more about the history of the shinobi world, the futile attempts at reconciliation between the two rival clans, as well as the secret of the Infinite Tsukuyomi. On seeing this, Madara deemed Konohagakure as yet another failed attempt to find peace. He took this information to his clan members and the rest of the village, but it fell on deaf ears.

As his reputation diminished in the eyes of the villagers, Madara fully succumbed to his Curse of Hatred. Realizing that he had no other recourse, he attacked the village multiple times, and eventually brought the Nine-Tails under his control to confront Hashirama. After a hard-fought battle, Hashirama finally found the resolve to kill his old friend and rival, but the Izanagi Madara had set up in the event of his death revived him. Now, armed with Hashirama’s DNA, which would grant him the Rinnegan near the end of his life, Madara set out to execute his Eye of the Moon Plan, living in the shadows of the shinobi world.
