Captain America: Brave New World is almost upon the fanbase, but the conversations behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first film of the new year has been dour and seems set to get even less optimistic.
Captain America: Brave New World has been in trouble since before it even started off, first with the immense weight of trying to supplant the iconic performance of Chris Evans as Captain America with Anthony Mackie’s new version. Additionally, the film’s plot seemed to be in flux with every new report that came across to fans. While there was some belief that a few small reshoots had made enough of a difference to salvage the project, things have since turned sour again. It was particularly worrying for fans when it recently came out that Captain America: Brave New World reshoots reportedly keep piling up after more bad test screenings.

Things have morphed to the point where some fans are coming to accept that Captain America: Brave New World is probably going to be bad, and a new piece of film trivia makes this idea even more likely. With the film just a few weeks away from its planned Valentine’s Day release, the project has begun to ramp up its marketing and promotions, including some facts that have fans a bit worried that the movie will indeed be an incoherent mess. The official listing from Marvel confirms that Captain America: Brave New World credits a total of six writers as working on the film. Three of the credited writers, Malcolm Spellman, Dalan Musson, and Rob Edwards, are given Story By credits, while Julius Onah, Peter Glanz, and Matt Orton get Screenplay By credits on the film. This puts the upcoming film in a tie for the lead on the most writers on an MCU project ever, and it’s not in good company.
Brave New World’s six writers puts it in the same situation as two other worrying projects, and this feeds into the reasonsing behind the current rise in worry. Spider-Man: Homecoming also had six writers, but that project was a collaborative work between Marvel Studios, Sony and a third-party company that all had to agree on and execute the most ambitious MCU appearance from a corporate perspective. While that film did well, the fact that the MCU-only Captain America: Brave New World shares the same need for a plethora of credited writers certainly isn’t a good sign. Worse yet is the final project, And-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In addition to being one of the worst films the franchise has sent to theatres, the film was also patently a mess. Mackie has already tried to ease tensions around the extensive reshoots that fans were barraged with over the course of the last two years, to no avail. Reports still suggest that the last few screenings of the film were less than satisfactory and there’s little chance that even more changes are going to fix the broken mess the movie is purported to be.
While there’s a lot of doom and gloom surrounding it, the news for the upcoming film isn’t all bleak. Captain America: Brave New World’s box office predictions are a good sign, as the early bets have a bit of a positive slant for the project. While a ton of the box office bombs that the MCU has thrown out have surprised execs at Marvel Studios and sometimes even taken fans for a loop, they were all called out in advance by the box office estimates ahead of time. With this good news, Brave New World might have dodged the first hurdle in what is sure to be a dreadful uphill battle to somehow satisfy audiences and justify its insane and novel budget, but fans won’t know until the film hits theatres.
