As the main protagonist of the entire series, Monkey D. Luffy has obviously gone through his fair share of harsh and difficult moments, but there’s no denying that his encounter with Bartholomew Kuma in the Sabaody Archipelago is the worst thing he ever had to endure.
Luffy witnessed his entire crew disappearing one by one – seemingly dying in the process – not to mention that Admiral Kizaru was hot on their heels and that his beloved brother, Portgas D. Ace, was currently in danger. At the end of this hard to watch scene, all Luffy could do was cry and scream in frustration, blaming himself because he wasn’t strong enough to protect his friends. Of course, Kuma was actually helping them out, but he didn’t know that at the moment.

Roronoa Zoro usually acts calm and collected, but this wasn’t always the case. But this was all going to be worth it because she finally had enough money to pay Arlong. That was until the pirate captain betrayed her and made Captain Nezumi take away all her hard-earned cash. To make things even worse, the villagers decided that they had enough of the Arlong Pirates and tried to fight them off by themselves. Nami couldn’t take enough of this torture, and she began crying and screaming Arlong’s name while she stabbed herself in the arm, desperately trying to erase her tattoo. Fortunately, Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats were there to save her and Cocoyasi Village, finally showing her that she could completely trust her new friends.

After the Franky Family defeated him and stole his gold, and after getting the news that Going Merry was on its last legs, Usopp began having doubts about his own strength and role within the crew. This caused a huge argument between him and Luffy when his captain decided to leave their ship behind. A furious Usopp left the crew and fought Luffy in order to acquire the Going Merry. While he was swiftly defeated, his captain gave it to him anyway, leaving Usopp with nothing but a dying ship while trying to start a new journey all by himself.

The Whole Cake Island Arc in general can be considered the lowest point in Sanji’s life, as he was forced to leave the Straw Hat Pirates behind, he was reunited with his estranged and abusive family, and he even had to beat up Luffy in order to prevent him from getting involved with Big Mom and Germa 66. The only good thing in Sanji’s life at that time was his new fiancee, Charlotte Pudding, who, despite their arranged marriage, seemed to be a sweet woman who legitimately liked him.

This was, however, until Sanji overheard Pudding in her room while she was talking to a captured Reiju, promptly revealing that it was all an act, that she didn’t like Sanji, and that she was planning to kill him during the wedding. That was the heartbreaking moment in which he realized that everything he did was not worth it and that his lovely fiancee hated him all along. The bright side is that this discovery prompted Sanji to return to Luffy and re-join the Straw Hat crew.

After that, Hiriluk went to Drum Castle and died there by consuming a potion that made him explode to ensure himself that he was not going to die due to Chopper’s mushroom. When Doctor Kureha told the reindeer the truth, he began screaming and crying, blaming himself for Hiriluk’s death. Despite his efforts, Chopper failed to save the doctor in time, and he lashed out at Wapol for making fun of his death, but he eventually realized that he could not defeat the evil tyrant by himself.

Despite his goofy and over-the-top design and personality, Franky has a surprisingly dark backstory, similar to all his fellow crewmates. Many years in the past, his mentor and father figure, Tom, was captured by the World Government and sentenced to death, and a young Cutty Flam blamed himself, since the devious Spandman ordered his men to use his Battle Frankies to attack Water 7 in order to successfully blame the infamous shipwright for the incident.
In frustration, Franky desperately tried to stop the Puffing Tom, the sea train that was carrying Tom to Enies Lobby, but he got run over by the massive vehicle that he had helped build in the first place. After failing to save his mentor and almost dying, Franky reconstructed his body, turned himself into a cyborg, and was forced to go into hiding for many years.

Brook is a tragic character by nature, mainly due to his entire design concept and Devil Fruit. This is exactly why he died alongside all his friends from the Rumbar Pirates while they were playing music together. But, much to his surprise, he managed to come back to life thanks to the powers of his Yomi Yomi no Mi, which turned out to be more of a curse than a blessing, since he was fated to stay on his ship alone for 50 years.
Losing his entire crew was already quite a traumatic event in and of itself, but being forced to stay on the ship alone, surrounded by all their corpses, must have been devastating for Brook, and it quite obviously made his mental health deteriorate with time. If all that wasn’t already enough torture, Gecko Moria eventually found him and stole his shadow. Fortunately, this incident is what led to the Straw Hats finding Brook.

Jinbe spent basically his entire life trying to fight the rampant discrimination that Fish-Men and Merfolk in the One Piece world constantly suffer. This led him to join the Sun Pirates, a righteous pirate crew that was not only made up of former Fish-Men slaves but was also characterized for rescuing other slaves all over the globe. And they were led by the legendary Fisher Tiger.
One day, when Fisher Tiger was kind enough to return a former slave-child named Koala to her hometown, he was ambushed by the Marines, who attacked and wounded Fisher Tiger so badly that he eventually passed away in front of his crew, lamenting that he could never forgive humans for all the suffering they caused. This was Jinbe’s lowest point in the series, not only because his beloved captain died in front of him but also because he ended up becoming the new captain of the Sun Pirates, which led to his falling out with Arlong, who later formed his own crew and invaded Cocoyasi Village. Jinbe would live to regret this for the rest of his life.
