One Piece: 20 Devil Fruit Abilities That Can Perfectly Counter Akainu

Akainu has proven himself to be a dangerous foe, but he’s not unbeatable. These Devil Fruit abilities would give him more than enough trouble.

There are very few anime series that have achieved the level of success that One Piece has, and the series has managed to also produce some decent movies. The series is set in a world where people can obtain supernatural powers by eating Devil Fruits, and each fruit comes with its own unique power. Akainu is the current fleet admiral of the Marines, and he ate the Magma-Magma Fruit—a Logia fruit that gives him the ability to create, manipulate, and transform into magma at will.

Magma is an incredibly hot and destructive liquid, which means that it is a dangerous and lethal power for anyone to have, especially someone like Akainu who is known for being ruthless. With that said, there are actually quite a few Devil Fruit abilities that can counter Akainu in some way.

Updated on October 16, 2023, by George Voutiritsas: Akainu first appeared during the Summit War at Marineford, and, during the time skip, was promoted to the rank of Fleet Admiral. He possesses a powerful Devil Fruit and is extremely proficient with Armament Haki, which explains why he is considered to be one of the strongest characters in all of One Piece. His ability to control magma is actually quite terrifying, as very few things can withstand the extreme heat that his Fruit produces. Few people can defeat Akainu and his power, but there are luckily several Devil Fruits that can stand up to him.

20 Jozu’s Sparkle-Sparkle Fruit

Jozu Covering His Body In Diamonds In One Piece

Jozu was the commander of the 3rd division of the Whitebeard Pirates, and he ate a Devil Fruit which grants him a virtually unbreakable defense. The Sparkle-Sparkle Fruit is a Paramecia-type Fruit that allows Jozu to transform any part of his body into diamond.

Dracule Mihawk is the world’s greatest swordsman, and Jozu was able to block his strongest attack without suffering a single scratch. The melting point of a diamond is about 7,280° Fahrenheit, and magma burns at roughly 2,200° Fahrenheit, which means that Akainu’s magma would not be able to damage Jozu’s body.

19 Bartolomeo’s Barrier-Barrier Fruit

One Piece - A Fishman Karate Master Breaking His Hand Trying To Break Bartolomeos Barrier

Bartolomeo is Luffy’s biggest fan, and he has a great defensive Devil Fruit. Thanks to the Barrier-Barrier Fruit, he can create barriers by crossing his fingers. These barriers are said to be indestructible. They cannot be damaged by powerful physical attacks, so Akainu’s magma punches should have no effect, and any magma blast should simply slide off the barriers.

Bartolomeo can also turn his barriers into weapons. He can throw them at his enemy, or he can crush them between two barriers. Theoretically, he could squish Akainu’s Logia body between two barriers and keep him trapped for a good amount of time.

18 Sengoku’s Human-Human Fruit, Model: Buddha

Sengoku Fighting In His Buddha Form In One Piece

Sengoku is the former Fleet Admiral of the Marines, which means that he is one of the strongest characters in One Piece. He ate a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit known as the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Buddha, which allows him to transform into a giant golden Buddha. He can also assume a Human-Buddha hybrid form.

While in his Buddha form, his body should be durable enough to withstand Akainu’s magma. Sengoku can also produce powerful golden shockwaves that were able to send Blackbeard’s Commanders flying. These shockwaves are just as strong as the Tremor-Tremor Fruit’s shockwaves, which dealt serious damage to Akainu’s body during the Summit War.

17 Doflamingo’s String-String Fruit

Donquixote Doflamingo Producing String From His Finger In One Piece

Doflamingo was the main villain of the Dressrosa Arc, and he was the first One Piece character to use Devil Fruit Awakening in battle. He ate the String-String Fruit, a Paramecia which gives him the ability to create and manipulate string. These strings are razor-sharp and extremely durable.

Thanks to his Awakening, Doflamingo can turn all non-living things around him into string. Under normal circumstances, these strings cannot harm Akainu, but Doflamingo can imbue his Awakened strings with Armament Haki which naturally counters Logia users. These Haki-infused strings should also be able to block Akainu’s magma.

16 Brûlée’s Mirror-Mirror Fruit

Inside Brulee's Mirror World In One Piece

Charlotte Brûlée is Big Mom’s 19th child, and she became a Mirror Human when she ate the Mirror-Mirror Fruit. This is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows Brûlée to create mirrors with her hands, and she can use them as portals. It also gives her access to her own separate mirror dimension.

What makes these mirrors especially useful, is the fact that they can absorb and reflect enemy attacks. If Akainu uses ranged attacks, she’ll absorb them, and if he attacks her directly, she can trap him inside her mirror dimension. It is fair to say that this is one of the most underrated Devil Fruit powers in One Piece.

15 Kuma’s Paw-Paw Fruit

Kuma using his Paw Paw fruit in One Piece

Bartholomew Kuma is a former Warlord of the Sea, as well as the former King of the Sorbet Kingdom. He ate a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit known as the Paw-Paw Fruit, which gives him a pair of paw pads on the palms of his hands.

This may not sound like a strong ability, but these paws can repel anything they come into contact with. Kuma himself stated that he can repel objects at the speed of light. If Akainu tries to hit Kuma with a magma punch, he can simply repel Akainu and send him flying to another island. If Akainu tries ranged attacks, Kuma’s paws should be able to repel them as well.

14 Kizaru’s Glint-Glint Fruit

Kizaru Creating A Sword Of light In One Piece

There are only three Admirals at any given time, and so far, each Admiral has been extremely powerful. Admiral Kizaru first appeared in the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, and he used his Glint-Glint Fruit to defeat several members of the Worst Generation with ease.

This Logia-type Devil Fruit allows Kizaru to create, control, and transform into light. He can use this power to blind his enemies and fire laser beams. It also gives the user the ability to move at the speed of light, which means that Akainu will never be able to hit him with a ranged or melee attack.

13 Enel’s Rumble Rumble Fruit

One Piece Enel Firing A Lightning Blast At Luffy In One Piece

Enel has not appeared since the Skypeia Arc, where he defeated most of his enemies without breaking a sweat. He ate the Rumble-Rumble Fruit, a Logia-type that gives him the ability to create and transform into lightning. This power is said to be invincible, and it is capable of destroying an entire island.

A bolt of lightning can produce heat of up to 50,000° Fahrenheit, which is hotter than the surface of the sun, so it would be able to overpower magma which produces far less heat. This Fruit allows Enel to move at the speed of lightning, which is more than 200,000 mph, so, in theory, Enel would be able to dodge Akainu’s attacks with ease.

12 Fujitora’s Press-Press Fruit

Fujitora Manipulating Gravity On Dressrosa In One Piece

Fujitora became an Admiral during the time skip, and he revealed his Devil Fruit ability shortly after being introduced in the Dressrosa Arc. The Press-Press Fruit is a Paramecia-type which gives its user the ability to create and manipulate gravitational forces. It can move living things and objects with minimal difficulty, and it can even call meteors down from space.

If Fujitora were to fight Akainu, he could use his Devil Fruit to create a powerful gravitational force to press Akainu against the ground. Even if Akainu turned his entire body into magma, he would not be able to move or attack.

11 Brook’s Revive-Revive Fruit

Brooke The Skeletal Swordsman In One Piece

There is a lot of sword fighting in One Piece, which is why Ghost of Tsushima fans might like it, and Brook is one of the more talented swordsmen in the series. Brook looks like a skeleton because he is one, and this happened because it took his soul a very long time to find his body.

This is all thanks to the power of the Revive-Revive Fruit, which enhances the user’s soul and allows them to resurrect themselves. The user can only revive once, however. Akainu aims to kill with his Devil Fruit, and there is no better way to counter this than by reversing death.

10 Big Mom’s Soul-Soul Fruit

Big Mom Attacking Brook With Her Soul Powers in One Piece

Big Mom is probably one of the only One Piece characters who can beat Luffy in a food-eating contest, but she also happens to be one of the strongest pirates in the series. She has incredible Haki, physical strength, and durability, but her greatest weapon is arguably her Soul-Soul Fruit.

This Devil Fruit allows the user to manipulate souls, to the point that they can infuse living souls into inorganic and inanimate objects. Akainu might be strong, but all Big Mom has to do is pull out his entire soul, because doing so would kill him instantly.

9 Kaido’s Fish-Fish Fruit, Model: Azure Dragon

Kaido In His Dragon Form In One Piece

Dungeons & Dragons fans enjoy anything involving dragons, and thanks to Kaido, One Piece now has its own dragon. Kaido probably possesses enough strength to beat Akainu without transforming, but if he does use his dragon form, Akainu won’t even scratch him.

When Kaido transforms into his dragon form, he gains even more inhuman durability because of his scales. He also gains the ability to use elemental attacks that are powerful enough to change entire landscapes. Kaido is immune to heat-based attacks, so Akainu’s magma would more or less be useless sludge in Kaido’s eyes.

8 Shiryu’s Clear-Clear Fruit

Shiryu Using The Clear-Clear Fruit In One Piece

Shiryu is another one of One Piece’s master swordsmen, and under normal circumstances, a swordsman without any visible Armament Haki would be at a disadvantage when fighting a Logia user. Shiryu now possesses the Clear-Clear Fruit, which allows him to turn himself and anything he touches invisible.

Someone with the Clear-Clear Fruit can just go invisible and attack Akainu whenever his guard is down, and if the user has Haki, they will be able to harm Akainu even if he transforms his body into magma.

7 Caesar Clown’s Gas-Gas Fruit

Caesar In His Gasous Form In One Oiece

Caesar Clown may not be a powerful villain, but he is a Logia user with a power that can take down almost anyone. Thanks to the Gas-Gas Fruit, Caesar can create, manipulate, and transform into gas at will, and this gas happens to be very poisonous.

If Akainu turns his entire body into magma, the poisonous gas won’t be able to enter his lungs, but doing so will still leave him open. Magma is made up of several dissolved gases, so the user of the Gas-Gas Fruit can simply remove the gasses that makeup magma. Doing so would not make the liquid magma anymore, which means Akainu wouldn’t be able to control it.

6 Luffy’s Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika

luffy smiling while using gear 5 in one piece

Akainu almost killed Luffy during the Summit War, but that was before Luffy knew how to use Haki, and he had not Awakened his Devil Fruit either. Luffy believed that he ate a Paramecia known as the Gum-Gum Fruit, but he actually ate the Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika – a Mythical Zoan that transforms him into the legendary Sun God.

Nika gives Luffy’s body the properties of rubber, and Gear 5 serves as the Fruit’s Awakening. While in this state, Luffy can fight with complete freedom, and he can turn anything he touches into rubber. This means that Luffy can turn all of Akainu’s magma into rubber which he can then manipulate. He can even grab Akainu’s Logia body and turn it into a rubber toy. The magma would still be hot, but Luffy can protect himself with Haki.

5 Law’s Op-Op Fruit

Law Using The Op-Op Fruit Against Marines In One Piece

Law may be allied with Luffy, but he is not officially part of the Straw Hat grand fleet, and his Devil Fruit is powerful and extremely useful. The Op-Op Fruit allows its user to create a spherical space in which they have complete control over every object’s position and orientation.

If Akainu ever finds himself inside this spherical space, someone like Law can separate his body parts and place them in seawater to prevent them from transforming into magma. Law can also use this power to surgically remove Akainu’s heart. Akainu might be able to make an artificial heart out of magma, but if something happens to his real heart, it will be the end of him.

4 Blackbeard’s Dark-Dark Fruit

Blackbeard Using His Vortex Ability In One Piece

One of the strongest jutsu in Naruto utilizes gravity, which explains why Blackbeard’s Devil Fruit is so powerful. The Dark-Dark Fruit gives its user the ability to create and control darkness at will, and thanks to its unique property of gravity, it effectively turns the user into a living black hole.

Like all black holes, Blackbeard can suck in anything, including magma, so any ranged attacks would be completely useless. What makes this Devil Fruit a true counter to Akainu though, is the fact that it can nullify the power of his Magma-Magma Fruit, and all Blackbeard needs to do is touch him.

3 Whitebeard’s Tremor-Tremor Fruit

Whitebeard's Tremor Fruit Activated In Marineford In One Piece

For years Whitebeard was considered to be the strongest man in the world, which is not all that surprising since he wielded the power of the Tremor-Tremor Fruit. This fruit allows its user to create quake-like vibrations through the ground, seafloor, and even the air, and it is believed that it is powerful enough to destroy the entire world.

During the Summit War, Whitebeard used his power to decimate Akainu during their fight. In fact, one of his quakes was able to harm Akainu even when parts of his body were made of magma.

2 Marco’s Bird-Bird Fruit, Model: Phoenix

Marco Surrounded By His Blue Flames In One Piece

Like Kaido, Marco possesses the power of a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit, except his comes in the form of a phoenix. Marco can fully transform into a phoenix which is covered in blue flames, and those flames remain even if he partially transforms.

This fruit doesn’t offer any real physical advantage in a fight, but the blue flames do allow the user to heal any injury within seconds, and in full phoenix form, attacks more or less pass straight through them. This means that no matter what Akainu does, his magma attacks will do literally zero damage to someone with this fruit.

1 Kuzan’s Ice-Ice Fruit

Kuzan Trying To Freeze Luffy In One Piece

One Piece may not have stunning visuals like other anime, but it does have its moments, especially when Logia users are involved. Kuzan is a former admiral who possesses the Ice-Ice Fruit, which allows him to create, manipulate, and transform into ice at will.

Magma may be incredibly hot, but even Kuzan’s ice is strong enough to freeze it, as evidenced by the fact that the two fought each other for ten straight days. Kuzan may have lost that battle, but no one knows exactly how, and Akainu now has a massive scar to show for it.
