Luffy is the protagonist of One Piece and certainly the most incredible character written by Oda. With the aim of becoming the Pirate King, Luffy set sail towards the Grand Line and, over the years, he has done quite well for himself, recently being recognized as one of the Yonko of the Sea.

Luffy has advanced quite a lot in terms of strength and much of that is down to the many transformations that he has gained over time. While nearly all of his transformations are iconic, some hold more importance than others, and, thus, are more beloved among the fans.

7 Nightmare Luffy

Nightmare Luffy One Piece

Nightmare Luffy is a temporary transformation that Luffy gained during the Thriller Bark arc of One Piece. This transformation saw the various victims of Moria put around 100 shadows inside Luffy’s body. As a result, Luffy grew tremendously in terms of power.

He also changed quite a lot in terms of appearance and received a very gothic look, resembling Frankenstein. In terms of power, Luffy grew to a point where he could easily stop Oars’s punches with a single hand. He could even defeat Oars on his own and that alone makes this transformation extremely overpowered.

6 Gear Third

One Piece Gear Third Featured Split Image

Gear Third is one of the many Gears that Luffy has developed, thanks to his incredible mastery of his Devil Fruit. Just like gear second, Luffy developed Gear Third during the Enies Lobby arc.

This gear sees Luffy inflate his bones by biting into his thumb directly. The inflation leads to his body becoming akin to that of a giant and the power that he generates with this Gear is absolutely immense. In fact, a single punch from Gear 3rd was strong enough to make Rob Lucci nearly lose consciousness. His control over this ability has improved drastically over time as he does not face any side effects anymore. Luffy is still extremely great at using Gear Third abilities, and he can even combine them with elemental powers, such as flame and even electricity.

5 Gear Fourth: Tankman

Luffy Tankman

Luffy developed Gear 4th during the 2-year timeskip on the island of Ruskaina, where he trained with gigantic animals. One of the many forms of his Gear 4th is known as Tank Man. As the name indicates, Tankman is a very tanky version of Gear 4th and sees Luffy inflate his muscles to the point where he is almost obese-looking.

While this form of Gear 4th lacks mobility, it provides an incredibly tough defense to him. Even Charlotte Cracker, a pirate worth 860 million berries, could not penetrate its defenses and was sent flying, being defeated in a single blow. It must be noted, however, that the version of Tankman that Luffy used against Cracker was the full version and is a conditional technique. Whether he can access Tankman without overeating or not remains to be seen.

4 Gear 4: Bounceman

Another incredible Gear 4th transformation that Luffy developed during the 2-year timeskip is Boundman, also known as Bounceman. This is actually Luffy’s go-to transformation when it comes to Gear Fourth. Luffy accessed this transformation for the very first time during his fight against Doflamingo in the Dressrosa arc. This form sees Luffy inflate his muscles greatly and then coat his body with Haki, to a point where the elasticity of his rubber grows tremendously.

Using the power of compression, Luffy increases his strength by manifold. When used against Doflamingo, Luffy was able to completely overpower him. This transformation has only grown stronger over time.

3 Gear Fourth: Snakeman

V2 Snakeman One Piece Treasure Cruise

Snakeman is another form of Gear 4th that Luffy developed to counter extremely nimble fighters as well as great users of Observation Haki. This form is less bulky than Bounceman and reduces the elasticity that Luffy has by a great degree. In return, Luffy gains additional mobility and speed. He primarily uses his fists, called Pythons, and reflects them off of the air, and with each reflection, they only grow faster.

Even masters of Observation Haki, such as Katakuri, had trouble dealing with this power. Snakeman might not pack the punch that Bounceman has, however, it is much faster and the transformation simply looks much cooler.

2 Gear Second

Luffy using Gear Second

Undoubtedly, one of Luffy’s coolest transformations is Gear Second. Just like Gear 3rd, Luffy developed this transformation during the Enies Lobby arc. This transformation sees Luffy dope his body by making his heart pump blood faster. As a result, the sweat evaporates off of his body and gives a steam-like effect.

Since Luffy’s heart is made of rubber, his body can take this high blood pressure and he gains immense speed, as well as power, and even reflexes, with this transformation. Gear Second is iconic as it was Luffy’s go-to transformation for quite a long time and even now, it remains special.

1 Gear 5

One Piece Luffy awakens Gear 5th

Luffy tapped into the power of Gear 5 during his fight against Kaido. To gain this transformation, Luffy had to awaken his Devil Fruit, which only happened when he died. When taking this transformation, Luffy’s heart starts to beat like drums, and Zunesha calls this heartbeat the Drums of Liberation. Luffy also gains an all-white form that makes him resemble a godly being.

Essentially, Luffy becomes Nika reborn when he takes this form. The powers of this transformation are immense and known to be the most ridiculous of all time. Luffy gains the ability to spread laughter, joy, and freedom wherever he goes and he comes to be known as the Warrior of Liberation. The only thing that can limit his power is his own imagination and anything that he can imagine, he can turn into reality.
