While not the most powerful character in the series, Bon Clay’s devil fruit ability is one of the most useful in One Piece.
Highlights
- Bon Clay’s Mane Mane no Mi devil fruit offers impressive trickery potential for subterfuge and espionage in One Piece.
- The devil fruit lacks attack and defense capabilities but excels in infiltration, making Bon Clay a valuable asset for Luffy.
- Bon Clay’s dedication and loyalty, combined with his devil fruit power, have led to key moments and plot twists in the series.
Bon Clay is one of the most loved characters in the One Piece series. While he isn’t portrayed as frequently as the major characters in the series, Bon Clay’s dedication and loyalty to Luffy make him stand out. As a character, a key thing that allows Bon Clay to provide value to Luffy is his devil fruit, the Mane Mane no Mi.
With the devil fruit, Bon Clay has helped Luffy in major ways such as when he helped the Straw Hat captain escape Impel Down. If the former Baroque Works agent had an offense-based devil fruit like Sabo’s Mera Mera no Mi or a defense-based devil fruit like the Bari Bari no Mi, events in One Piece could’ve ended very differently.

A Devil Fruit Perfect For Trickery
The Mane Mane No Mi Could Easily Cause The Collapse Of A Country

The Mane Mane no Mi is not a devil fruit many fans of the series would pick if they could obtain any devil fruit ability. However, when it comes to political struggle and upheaval, few devil fruits can compete with the Mane Mane no Mi potential for infiltration and psychological attacks.
The Mane Mane no Mi is a paramecia devil fruit currently owned by Bon Clay. At the beginning of the series, Bon Clay was a member and the number two agent of Crocodile’s agency. His devil fruit was particularly suited to Crocodile’s purpose, as the then warlord wanted to overthrow the King of Alabasta.
The Mane Mane no Mi turns its user into an imitating human, allowing the user to imitate a person’s body structure, voice, and face, essentially turning the user into a body double of their target. According to Bon Clay, he can imitate a person after he’s touched the person’s face with his right hand, and he’ll revert if he touches his face with his left hand. However, while this is generally considered true, the former user of the Mane Mane no Mi, Kurozumi Higurashi, was never seen touching Momonosuke, Oden, or Sukiyaki before impersonating them.
Strengths And Limitations Of The Mane Mane No Mi
Great For Trickery, But Weak In Terms Of Attack And Defense
Close
While it is unknown how long Bon Clay has had the Mane Mane no Mi, the former Baroque Works agent is highly skilled with his devil fruit. After touching a person’s face, Bon Clay can transform into said person; however, his devil fruit only changes his physique and voice to that of the person and not his mannerisms or devil fruit should his target possess one. Moreover, as a master of Okama Kenpo, he will not be able to use his techniques in most bodies he transforms into, as the bodies of the individuals are not conditioned and properly trained to execute his techniques.
With its infiltration capabilities, the Mane Mane no Mi redefines the potential of a spy in the One Piece series as it allows its user to easily access classified information by taking on the identity of a high-class personnel. Once transformed into a person in a position of authority, Bon Clay can easily access a country’s secrets with little to no resistance. The only barriers are the condition of having to touch his target’s face and being unable to imitate his target’s mannerisms. Because he can easily be discovered via his mannerisms, the user of the Mane Mane no Mi is expected to have at least a little knowledge of how the target acts.
The greatest strength of the Mane Mane no Mi is undoubtedly its infiltration capabilities; however, its focus on infiltration without offense or defense capabilities also doubles as its greatest weakness. As the devil fruit itself lacks capabilities no more than infiltration, the user of the fruit will have to be immensely skilled in combat to utilize the fruit to its maximum capability.

Bon Clay’s Devil Fruit Has Contributed To Major Plot Lines In One Piece

The known users of the Mane Mane no Mi have contributed to some of the biggest saves and downfalls in One Piece history. The past user of the devil fruit, Kurozumi Higurashi, used the fruit’s abilities to deceive Oden, Kaido, and Sukiyaki. During Oden and Kaido’s battle, Kurozumi Higurashi transforms into a helpless Momonosuke crying for help. As Oden’s focus turned from Kaido to his ‘child’, the distracted samurai was left at the mercy of Kaido’s attack.
For Bon Clay, the moment in which he immortalized his name in the minds of fans was during the Marineford arc, during which he sacrificed himself for Luffy by turning into Magellan. This moment shocked fans and characters alike, as Bon Clay proved that with his dedication, loyalty, and devil fruit, he is an unstoppable ally that values friendship. Bon Clay has achieved recognition with his devil fruit, which is neither suited for offense nor defense but for subterfuge.

Imitating Devil Fruit Powers Or Elevating Transformation Abilities: Potential Awakening Abilities For The Mane Mane No Mi
Close
As all devil fruits can undergo an awakening, many fans speculate on what sort of effects the awakening of the Mane Mane no Mi would produce. As a paramecia-type devil fruit, the Mane Mane no Mi is expected to affect the environment as other awakened paramecia devil fruits have portrayed.
However, due to the nature of the fruit and the awakening of the Ope Ope no Mi, which didn’t have a direct effect on the environment but on objects that Law deemed fit, some speculate that the Mane Mane no Mi could allow Bon Clay to also imitate the devil fruit powers of his target, but for a limited time. Additionally, following the rule of paramecia devil fruits affecting the environment, Bon Clay may be able to imitate inanimate objects or transform other individuals to imitate others. This would allow him to use his powers on other people, not just himself, making his devil fruit even greater at subterfuge than it already is.
