Dragon Ball inspired a generation of children all over the world. This is especially true for those who grew up in the 90s, however, the influence of this legendary creator knows absolutely no bounds on not just anime but pop culture as a whole. Without Dragon Ball, modern manga would certainly not have existed as it does, and most of the favorite works of fans all over the world would certainly not even have existed. When it comes to impact, no series out there made a bigger impact than Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, and that certainly goes to say a lot.
Oda’s Message On Toriyama’s Death
Toriyama inspired people from all over the world, however, he also had a major influence on the up-and-coming shonen mangaka, especially the likes of Oda and Kishimoto. Oda, in particular, has very fond memories of Toriyama, and just like everyone else, he was incredibly saddened by the news of the passing of this legendary creator.
Oda and Toriyama have been very close and they have even held interviews with each other, where Oda went on to showcase his love for Toriyama’s work. To Oda, Toriyama is actually a god with untouchable status. Oda thoroughly believes that a lot of what he Is today is down to Toriyama’s fantastic work.
With the news of Toriyama’s passing being finally made public, Oda, just like many other mangaka, revealed his own message about the death of this legendary creator of Dragon Ball, who inspired the entire world, including him, in many ways. Here is what Oda had to say:
“It is too early. The hole is too big. Sadness washes over me when I think that I will never see him again. I have admired him so much since I was a child, so I remember the day he called me by name for the first time. On the way home from the day you used the word “friend” for me and Kishimoto, I remember being overjoyed with Kishimoto. I also remember the last conversation we had.
I was one of those who took the baton from the days when reading manga made you a fool, and he also created an era when both adults and children could enjoy reading manga. He showed us the dream that manga can go worldwide. It was like watching a hero going forward.
For not only mangakas but also creators in various industries, the excitement and emotion of the time of Dragon Ball serialization must have taken root in their childhood. His existence is like a big tree.
For the manga artists of our generation who stood on the same stage, Toriyama’s works became more and more important to me as I got closer to the same stage. I even felt scared. But I am just happy to see the aloof man himself again. Because we love him on a blood level.
With respect and gratitude for the creative world he has left behind. I pray for his soulful rest in peace. May heaven be the joyous world he envisioned.”
Dragon Ball influenced Oda in many ways. In fact, Oda once mentioned that the place above his workbench is actually decorated with Toriyama’s signature. This just gives fans an idea of what Toriyama really meant to Oda, and of course, just like him, many other authors who picked up a pen and started drawing manga because of him.
Although Oda did admit that he never experienced Dr. Slump, it was Dragon Ball, specifically the second episode of the anime, that got him deep into this story. Oda once mentioned that he was quite invested in Disney before Dragon Ball, however, once he got a taste of what Toriyama had to offer, he realized that it was on a completely different level.

This is one of the many reasons why Oda considers Toriyama to be a god and in an entirely different league. Oda was inspired to create his very own manga because of Dragon Ball, and had it not been for this legendary author, perhaps fans would never have gotten to experience One Piece either. As an author, and in many other ways, Dragon Ball has changed to Oda for the better and showing him what a mangaka is truly all about.
Oda also harbors deep care for Toriyama, as was evident from his message to the author when they held an interview together, which was published in One Piece Color Walk 1. When asked to deliver encouraging words to each other, Oda had this to say to Toriyama:
“Please, be free and do whatever you want to! No matter what you do, I will be happy so long as you keep drawing illustrations, Toriyama sensei. However, I’m sure the editorial staff will say something like “Draw a series!””
Just like Oda, many other authors also paid respect to Toriyama, revealing their own experiences with the legendary manga. This doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone, especially knowing that modern manga exists the way it does because of Toriyama and the incredible vision with which he redefined this world.
It is unbearably sad that Toriyama ended up passing away, but he did leave behind a massive gift for all the world to enjoy for generations to come. Toriyama’s work has been immortalized. It is there for people to enjoy over and over again, gush over its beauty, and laugh with every moment of joy it brings to them. Its influence is immortal, as anime and manga have been redefined as a whole simply because of this one person. His influence extends beyond these things, and pop culture in general has been influenced heavily by Akira Toriyama’s incredible vision. It is his time to rest, but his works will forever live, as will his legacy as one of the greatest manga authors to have ever existed.
At times like these, Toriyama’s very own students, as well as the fans, find comfort in knowing that he changed the world of media in many ways and that his works will always be there to influence a new generation of writers, and inspire all watchers, both old and young, who continue to watch Goku and his adventures across the world of Dragon Ball, as he goes on incredible journeys and save the world from evil entities, bringing tremendous joy to everyone.
