Loki was first teased many years ago during the Thriller Bark arc, where it was revealed that Big Mom had arranged a marriage between him and Lola. So, fans were always very curious to see what this mythical figure actually looked like and speculated about how powerful he could be, and this hype was more than delivered in Chapter 1130 when he made his debut.
Unbeknownst to fans before this, Loki was believed to be incredibly evil and destructive by the people of Elbaf, who gave him the moniker of ‘the Accursed Prince’. However, even after this reveal, many fans were convinced to give Loki the benefit of the doubt, saying that he, in truth, wasn’t actually evil and was just misunderstood, even coming up with theories saying that he committed all the horrible acts that he was known to have committed out of a need to protect everyone else on Elbaf.
No man chooses to be chained. And I am no exception in this regard. I would rather be free.
However, Chapter 1136 of the manga reveals much of his backstory, which implies that this might not be the case. Loki’s birth was already wrapped in misfortune since there was a grim prophecy that foretold Loki’s evil nature, stating that his father, King Harald, would meet his end at the hands of his own son. To make matters worse, right after he was born, the steed of Elbaf’s royal family, the Horse of Fortune, inexplicably died, making everyone think Loki’s malicious presence had brought about his end.
The notoriety surrounding the child would only get worse, since a year after the death of the royal steed, Loki’s mother would die too. Being a giant as well as the son of the King of Elbaf meant that Loki was born with incredible natural strength, which he used to torment the other giants on the land, even going on to Elbaf’s terrifying Realm of the Dead and essentially claiming the place as his own.

The Realm of the Dead is a scary and destitute land filled with gigantic wild beasts that are extremely hostile to intruders, meaning that this area is even avoided by the giants of Elbaf. Despite this, Loki went there and made the place his personal playground, taming many of the deadly beasts that called this place their home and killing those that didn’t adhere to his new rule. After fostering an army of these creatures, he proceeded to let them all loose in the upper levels of Elbaf, causing pandemonium for the residents of the island.
Moreover, this was all done by the mere age of 10. As he grew up, he grew bolder and far more powerful, as he would routinely set fire to much of the land, endangering many lives in the process. The worst of it all was the fact that he had the authority of a prince, so he used his power to get away with just about anything he wanted with very few repercussions, if any at all. Ultimately, the prophecy eventually came true when Loki proceeded to murder his father in cold blood.

Some time after this, Loki set out to sea with the power of the legendary Devil Fruit which had belonged to the Royal Line of Elbaf for generations. However, this escapade wouldn’t last long as he was captured by Shanks and sent back to Elbaf to be held as a prisoner at the base of the Adam Tree, held in place by giant chains presumably made of Seastone. Many speculate that this was the event that elevated Shanks to become an Emperor of the Sea.
This is the reason why Loki is still considered to be the Accursed Prince and is still looked down upon with revulsion. His ruthless personality is something that still exists to this day, as can be seen in his meeting with the Gods’ Knights at the end of Chapter 1136. When Gunko was choking the life out of the giant wolf, who Loki considers a friend and someone who he genuinely didn’t want to die, he was faced with a choice.

As his friend is dying, ‘Shanks’ Twin’ gives him an ultimatum, stating that if Loki joins the ranks of the Gods’ Knights, they will let the wolf go. However, Loki states that he won’t be brought down to their level to be forced to join them and that he accepts the sacrifice of the wolf’s life. This just shows that Loki is incredibly ruthless and gives credence to the many theories of him actually being the evil man the giants say he is.

While Chapter 1136 certainly does paint Loki in a far more evil light than what fans originally believed, many still think that there is more to the character. The most common mindset in this regard states that the prophecy of Loki turning out evil was something that shaped the views of everyone else before the man was even born, leading to everyone treating him with a great deal of prejudice. Although King Harald was a great man revered for his kindness, he would have bought into the prophecy too much after seeing the steed and his wife die.
This would have led to the giants ostracizing Loki to the point where he had genuine disdain for them, perhaps even going to the Realm of the Dead to seek out companionship since he couldn’t find it anywhere else. If this truly ends up being the case, then it would give a reason why Loki turned out the way he did and, although it doesn’t justify his actions, it gives a bit of a reason as to what his motivations likely are going into the future.
