  • Despite the huge reveals, Oda leaves fans with more questions, making Chapter 1138 one of the best in the series.

Ever since the start of the long-awaited Elbaf arc, Oda has truly blessed One Piece fans by releasing incredible chapters that are often even better than the ones before them. Everyone always had impossibly high expectations for when the Straw Hats would reach this fabled island, but so far, despite the arc only being in its infancy, it has already delivered on the hype.

This all came to a head in Chapter 1138, which gave fans one of the greatest double-spreads in the history of One Piece, prompting many to call it the greatest chapter that Oda has released for the series in many years. In this article, let’s break down what exactly was revealed in this chapter and look at whether this is actually one of the greatest chapters in the entire series or if fans are hyping it up a bit too much.

Elbaf

Ever since the Straw Hats arrived on Elbaf, there have been quite a few notable and important things revealed about not only the current state of the world but about its history in general. A few chapters ago, Jarul unveiled a massive secret that fans had no idea about for over 1100 chapters; that there have been two iterations of the world before the current one, and that they were both destroyed.

This changed everything, since fans were always aware of the elusive Void Century and wanted to know more about it, but now, Oda revealed that there is an even more vague and mysterious time before the Void Century even began. The only connecting trait that all ‘3 worlds’ have is the legendary Sun God Nika Devil Fruit. Since this reveal, fans have been theorizing like crazy about what it could all mean.

According to the “Harley” texts, the world has already been destroyed twice before and the name of Sun God Nika is invoked after each instance.

However, Chapter 1138 puts much of that to rest by showing Franky reacting to the massive mural etched onto the Adam Tree which vaguely showed the history of the previous worlds as understood by the residents of Elbaf. Everything to do with this mural is purely speculative, but there are quite a few clear parallels to be made. The right side of the mural showed what many presume to be the First World, with a monarch seemingly ruling over others in an oppressive manner, similar to the system of government that prevails in the world today.

Surprisingly, it also showed something called ‘the Serpent of Hell’, which has previously gone unheard of in the series and is something that fans know nothing about. The inscription for the first world hints that people started to use Devil Fruits in order to gain enough power to fight against those who were oppressing them, which the ‘God of the Earth’ was furious at. This caused them to summon the Serpent of Hell to keep the status quo, which many believe is an allegory to the Red Line that divided the world.

The Second World is the time of Joyboy and the Void Century, which hints at the story of how Joyboy was finally defeated and how the residents of the 20 ancient kingdoms defeated the Sun God and ascended to become Gods themselves, which is how the Celestial Dragons and World Government came to be. This mural confirmed a fan theory that states that there are several ‘God Fruits’, as hinted by the Gods of Earth, Forest, and Sea.

The most important of these seems to be the part of the mural on the left, which likely depicts the Third World and the Final War against the forces of Imu. If this is truly the case, then it shows Luffy with his many allies all coming together to defeat Imu and the Celestial Dragons. The forces of the heroes seem to show Luffy, Loki, the Giants, Fishmen, the Minks, Laboon, and the Lunarians, among many others. On the opposing side, there is a hint of Imu’s true power and the other Celestial Dragons.

Apparently, slaves in ancient times believed in a legendary warrior that would eventually come and save them! They called him ‘Sun God’ Nika!

This is perhaps the most important and biggest lore drop that fans of the series have ever gotten, showing that there is so much of the history of the world that is yet to be revealed. In typical Oda fashion, while this does give some answers to what fans know, it only raises even more questions regarding the state of the world and how it has been for all of these years. Still, though, it reveals a ton of information about not only the Void Century and the time before that, but the Final War at the end of the series as well.

While this has rightly taken over the thoughts of the fanbase, there was also an insight into Loki’s conversation with Shamrock and Gunko. After outright refusing their offer to join the Gods’ Knights, Shamrock reveals his unparalleled power with how his (likely) Supreme Grade Sword has eaten the Cerberus Mythical Zoan fruit, making him seem even more overpowered than before. Not only was this an amazing reveal that almost killed Loki, but it also disproved one of One Piece’s oldest theories regarding Blackbeard!

Here, Shamrock differentiates himself from his twin brother since he also seems to have the power of a Devil Fruit alongside what is likely to be some of the most powerful Conqueror’s Haki in the series. It’s quite clear that the series is building up toward the eventual clash between the two brothers, but in such an altercation, it seems that Shamrock would have the upper hand, due to him having incredible Conqueror’s Haki due to him being the leader of the Gods’ Knights, his Supreme Grade Sword having Mythical Zoan powers, and his having both his arms too.

Is This One Of The Best Chapters?

Are Fan’s Sentiments Justified?

Close

In case there are any doubts about it, the answer is yes, Chapter 1138 is by far one of the best singular chapters in the history of One Piece. This is a franchise known for its length and slow pacing, so massive lore drops are generally few and far between. Although Elbaf had already revealed a ton of details regarding the world, Chapter 1138 was a massive chapter despite that due to the sheer length and brevity of everything that it showed.

Although many reveals were made here, they were still done so in a way that Oda is very familiar with showing since more questions arose along with the answers that were given. What exactly happened in the 2 previous worlds? Who was the first Nika? How old is Imu exactly? Such questions are synonymous with the One Piece series as a whole, so to know that there are still tons of things left to see in the world is something fans continue to look forward to.

One Piece can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
