One Piece fans were in seventh heaven after the release of Episode 1071. The much-anticipated episode was released on August 6th, 2023, and it received positive reviews from the audience. Among the hustle and bustle of Gear 5, some One Piece fans completely overlooked an important detail concerning Luffy, which happened after he was struck by Kaido. It led to the onset of a change that was noticed by Zunesha. It listened to the change in Luffy’s heartbeat and claimed that Joyboy had finally returned.
The elephant relayed this information to Momonosuke, who was confused. The member of the Worst Generation unlocked a new transformation, which changed the color of his hair, eyebrows, shirt, and shorts to white. His eyebrows become swirled, and a white cloud covers his back. Not only is this form powerful, but it is also related to Joyboy.
Who Was Joyboy
Joyboy is a legendary figure who existed many centuries prior to the current timeline. He was mentioned for the very first time by Nico Robin when she read the Poneglyph in Fish-Man Island. Given the fact that he lived such a long time ago, it is safe to say that Joyboy was involved in the war against the World Government. While fighting the group of 20 nations, Joyboy must have realized that he would not make it out alive. So, he might have decided to leave the One Piece behind on Laugh Tale. Aside from the message on the Fish-Man Island Poneglyph, Joyboy left behind more information about his return. When the Roger Pirates found Joyboy’s treasure, they decided to leave it untouched as they were too early.
Considering his importance, it is hardly surprising that Joyboy’s name was erased from the annals of history by the World Government. The organization didn’t want people to find the actual truth. Fortunately, they could not erase his name from the indestructible Poneglyphs. Joyboy died a long time ago, so why did Zunesha say that he had returned?
Connected By Devil Fruit
Luffy and Joyboy are connected by the Hito Hito no MI, Model: Nika. As confirmed by the Gorosei, Zoan-type Devil Fruits have their own will, which is how the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, managed to avoid the World Government. This also explains why there are only a few Awakened Zoan-type Devil Fruits in One Piece. Before Luffy, the only other Awakened Zoan-type Devil Fruit users were the Impel Down jailers.
While they unlocked the true power of their Devil Fruits, they could not revert to their original human forms. The will of the Devil Fruit overtook theirs, and it caused their cognitive abilities to dwindle. It makes sense why Kaido does not have an Awakened Devil Fruit. If he had used the Awakening too many times, he could have also succumbed to the Devil Fruit’s feral nature. However, Luffy’s Devil Fruit is different from any other in One Piece; after all, it embodies the will of Nika.
The Devil Fruit’s true nature remained hidden for so long because of Luffy’s strong will. It would have been impossible for the Devil Fruit’s will to overcome his tenacity. Since Luffy awakened the power of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, he has become an even bigger threat to the World Government. While using Gear 5, Luffy’s strength increases significantly. Considering how he manhandled Kaido, it is safe to say that there are not many characters who can match him in combat. It will be interesting to see how Luffy’s Gear 5 helps him take down Kaido. All of his previous powers have failed, but Gear 5 may prove enough to take down the Strongest Creature in the World. Kaido was not impressed even after seeing Luffy’s new form, mainly because he had already beaten Luffy multiple times. However, he will still need to be wary of the Supernova’s threat.
Aside from fighting, Gear 5 is significant to the series as a whole. Using this transformation brings forth the will of Nika, who was known as the Warrior of Liberation. This insinuates that Luffy will be the one to free the world from the clutches of the villainous World Government. The young pirate has already tussled with them multiple times. Now that he has awakened his Devil Fruit, he can cause even more problems for the organization.
However, Gear 5 is not devoid of drawbacks; in fact, if Luffy is not careful, it could cost him dearly. As previously stated, the Devil Fruit has a will of its own, and using it too many times will cause Luffy to be overwhelmed to the point where he will become someone else. While it may not be as bad as the Impel Down jailers, it wouldn’t bode well for the series to have the main character lose his sense of identity. In any case, it will be interesting to see how Luffy progresses from here on out.
