Koby of the Marines has been at the receiving end of quite a lot of focus recently in One Piece. Having gone to Amazon Lily to capture Boa Hancock, Koby was embarrassed and later taken by Blackbeard as a captive. His capture led to Garp sailing to the Pirate Island and launching a full scale invasion in order to rescue him and fans have totally enjoyed everything that has gone down on this powerful island, housing monstrous Pirates.
Garp was seen fighting in a life-and-death battle where he ended up sacrificing himself for the Navy and in the midst of it all, Koby was receiving his last lesson from his mentor and undergoing a metamorphosis. Koby evolved in front of the eyes of the fans in the recent chapters of One Piece and unleashed his inner potential with a powerful technique called Honesty Impact.
Koby’s Secret Training
One Piece chapter 1088 was phenomenal in many ways and focused on quite a lot of different things at the same time. While Garp’s last stand was at the center of it all, fans also got to see the next generation of Marines spring forth and take the age by the helm, showing Garp why exactly he was right in placing his trust in them. Koby was especially central to this and fans also got a small flashback of him through Garp. In the flashback, Garp was seen asking Helmeppo why Koby is always bandaged and bloodied despite being a fast learner.
Garp’s initial assumption was simply that Koby is not strong enough to survive his training. Much to his surprise, he found out through Helmeppo that Koby was actually training more after undergoing the rigorous training that Garp put him through. Koby believed that he is much weaker than an average person and for that reason, he has to train not 10 but around 100 or 200 times more than all of them. That is precisely why on each night, Koby went down to the docks and practiced on one of the Battleship Bags by himself. He ended up bruising and bloodying his arm and shoulders while punching the Battleship Bags, however, the training bore fruit as Koby’s inner potential exploded later on in the story. Garp was extremely impressed by Koby undergoing this sort of training, given that he used to go through it himself when he was younger.
Koby’s Haki Skills
The rules of undergoing training at Battleship Bags have always been to not use any Devil Fruit power or Haki. Koby does not have either of them and, even if he wanted to use Haki, he couldn’t because he simply didn’t possess it at the time. Kobe trained rigorously at the battleship bags for years and eventually, after the War of Marineford, he finally awoke to Haki. Garp ended up training Koby in the ways of Haki as well and he is a very skillful user of this technique now. Koby has already been revealed to be a good user of Observation Haki, far better than the others in his group. At the same time, his Armament Haki has also improved drastically and fans have seen that already in the previous chapter.
What’s more, Koby is also a skillful user of the Rokushiki arts and he has incorporated them into his fighting style over the years. Koby is tremendously powerful now and certainly worthy of a 500 million berry bounty, which has been placed on his head by the Cross Guild, as indicated by the five stars he has on his bounty poster.
Koby’s Haki is only going to grow even further in the future and the stronger this aspect of his strength gets, the more dangerous he will become to the pirates. As the Hero of the Marines, Koby has to live up to these expectations and also meet the standards that have been set for him by Garp. To that end, Koby has to improve even further and take his Haki skills to the next level. Perhaps, in the future, Koby might even awaken the power of Conqueror’s Haki, just like his mentor, and use it in battle against the strongest pirates on the ocean.
Koby’s Honesty Impact
Kobe’s incredible Haki is central to his Honesty Impact. Fans saw this Honesty Impact being used for the very first time against Avalo Pizarro, the Fourth Ship Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates, in One Piece chapter 1088. Shortly after Garp blazed through Kuzan and delivered a powerful technique called Galaxy Divide on Avalo Pizzaro’s head by punching the giant pirate skull on the Pirate Island, Koby decided to unleash his technique as well. Koby’s Honesty Impact sees him copy Garp’s movement by moving extremely fast and then leaping into the air. He then goes on to charge his fist with Armament Haki to a great degree, as indicated by the blackened arm and black lightning sparks emanating from his fist.
He then goes on to punch his target incredibly hard, producing a giant shockwave capable of blasting through his enemies. When used against Pizarro, Honestly Impact ended up shattering his arm right up to the shoulder and delivering a serious injury to him. Unfortunately, this technique is not as strong as fans would hope. Pizarro, despite being just a commander under Blackbeard, was not defeated by this technique even though it came on top of Garp’s own Galaxy Divide. This technique is not yet strong enough to defeat a Yonko Commander, however, it is impressive nonetheless.
How Strong Is Koby?
Right now, Koby has certainly jumped up a level and has gotten stronger. Koby is certainly worth his five-star bounty now and, as a Marine, he has, once again, lived up to the title of the Hero. Koby is Garp’s protege and he certainly lived up to his expectations in the previous chapter. It must be said that Koby still has a lot of room to grow and right now, he’s nowhere near the strongest characters in the One Piece world. In fact, Koby is not even at the level of a Yonko Commander at the moment. This is evident from the fact that Koby threw everything he had at Pizarro and only managed to injure him to a certain degree, not even being able to defeat him.
By Koby’s own admission, this was the pinnacle of his strength and that only means that he still has a long way to go. While Koby has a lot of potential left to fulfill, one cannot disregard his progress which has been nothing short of impressive so far. In the future of the series, Koby will potentially get more opportunities like this to shine even further and grow another step closer to his dream of becoming an Admiral of the Navy. Right now, Koby is certainly one of the most exciting talents in the ranks of the Navy. Alongside the likes of Prince Gruss, Helmeppo, and other powerful Marines, Koby is going to be very influential for the Navy in the future.
