That said, fans know that One Piece chapter 1138 was a significant step in the right direction, as it gave the readers a lot of incredible information pertaining to the lore of the previous One Piece worlds that existed long before the current era. A part of this lore revealed by Oda also covered the creation of the Devil Fruits, which, although not explained fully, now has a solid basis to stand on.

Vegapunk’s Explanation For The Creation Of Devil Fruits

For the longest time, One Piece fans didn’t know much about Devil Fruits and their creation. Oda certainly did want to touch up on the creation of these fruits, but couldn’t find the proper window to actually explain anything about them until Dr. Vegapunk popped up in the story. In fact, Oda even stated clearly that a certain someone would go on to explain the mysteries behind the Devil Fruits.

Q: Helloooooo! I’ve got a serious question despite the Question Corner’s reputation for lowbrow jokes! In volume 46, Usopp said that there are no two powers that are the same in this world. But this seems to be a bit different from what was being said in a question corner in volume 45. Since the Gum-Gum Fruit is in the encyclopedia, that means the one Luffy ate couldn’t be the first one of its kind! Beautiful and intelligent Eiichiro Oda, please clarify this for me!

O: You’re pretty sharp. But it’s okay. I haven’t said anything contradictory. Here’s a hint for you: I’ll put what Usopp said in a slightly different way. “In this world, no two powers exist at the same time.” Is that easier to understand? There is a certain scholar who will appear in the upcoming story who will explain what the Devil Fruits are soon.

The result of Vegapunk’s research eventually led him to the conclusion that Devil Fruits are simply a result of human desires and wishes, and a different pathway to evolution. They’re unnatural in their very essence, but they are brought forth when someone dreams or wishes of a certain thing being real. For instance, someone wishing for the Sun God Nika to be real would then give rise to the manifestation of the Nika Devil Fruit, which is likely what happened with the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika.

But, of course, there is more to it than that. Even though fans know that the Devil Fruits are created by the wishes of the people, the process behind it still remains unexplained. But, Oda might’ve hinted at it in the recent revelation of the Harley.

  • Nika Came Long Before The Void Century

First World

Flames engulfed the land, and humans succumbed to their desires, touching the forbidden Sun. The enslaved prayed, and the Sun God appeared. The Earth God was enraged, and together with the serpent of infernal flames, shrouded the world in death and darkness. They would never meet again.

It is mentioned in the Harley that the First World existed long before the Void Century. During this time, the earth was covered with flame and this flame was likely used as a resource to create the undying flame, or the Mother Flame, which is what Vegapunk wanted to replicate in Egghead. Humanity grew greedy and touched the sun, seizing the power for themselves and becoming royalty. Slaves were forced to collect the power, and it was their wishes that eventually led to the creation of the Sun God Nika. It is unclear as to how Sun God Nika came into existence, but given that Devil Fruits weren’t a thing back then, Nika had to have come from somewhere.

The likeliest answer is the moon, as depicted by the mural in the Adam Tree, clearly visible in One Piece chapter 1138. However, the arrival of the Sun God Nika fueled the anger of the Earth God and they joined forces with the Serpent of Infernal Flames. Together, they destroyed the world.

The Second World And The Creation Of The Devil Fruits

Second World

joy Boy And Emet one piece 1139

Breath stirred within the void, and the Forest God sent forth demons. The Sun did nothing but spread the fires of war. The people of the half-moon dreamed, the people of the full-moon dreamed. Humans slew the Sun and became Gods, and the Sea God raged. They Would never meet again.

In the Second World, things get a lot more serious. This likely happens centuries after the destruction of the First World, and the reason for that is simple. The world was completely decimated and whatever was left likely had to restart building society. When humans recovered, the Forest God came into play. It is this Forest God that, most likely, became responsible for the creation of the Devil Fruits. The Harley clearly states that it was the Forest God that sent forth demons.

What exactly these demons are remains unknown. This could be interpreted in two ways. Either it means that the Forest God created the Devil Fruits themselves, which is a simple interpretation. Or, it could be something deeper. It is possible that the power of the Forest God was used for the demonic power of the Gorosei, which would fit in name. But, the Halfmoon and the Fullmoon people used their dreams (just as Vegapunk mentioned) to counter that power. It could easily have been either and fans can simply come to their own conclusions. One way or another, the Forest God gave birth to Devils.

If the Forest God gave birth to demons, then it’s possible that the Devil Fruits were created by the dreams of the full-moon and the half-moon people. In other words, the Devil Fruits might actually have been created by the people of the D Clan (halfmoon) and the Moon people (winged races from the moon) together, using the power of their wishes, possibly making use of the Forest God’s power. What exact devil fruits they created isn’t known, but one thing is for sure, Nika was brought back once again using their dreams, this time, in the form of Joy Boy.

How One Piece's Final Saga Could Surpass Its Shonen Peers Gear 5 Luffy - Featured

In chaos, there is void. The troubled shadow remembers the promised day, and hears the voice of the fractured moon. The Sun God dances and laughs, leading the world to its end. The sun will return once more, and a new dawn will arrive. Surely, this time, they will meet again.

Sadly, Joy Boy died and his allies lost the battle. This is where the tale gets interesting as the Void Century sent the world into a dark age, and this era only ended after the death of Joy Boy. That said Joy Boy has now returned in the Third World, and this time around, he will most definitely fight and beat Imu, and fulfill the age-old prophecy.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus apps. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1139, is set to be February 9, 2025.
