Regardless of whether Oda will have Shanks come to Elbaf or not, a great deal about him, including his potential abilities could be hinted at here, which also includes his Devil Fruit abilities. Fans had no idea that Shamrock Figarland would be coming to Elbaf until Oda made it clear in his Jump Festa message, which stated the following:
As for the manga, we’ve finally arrived in Elbaf! It’s a laid-back kingdom, but the serenity is about to be shattered by the arrival of a particular man! Meanwhile, there will be tumult in other seas as well! And at last, that one guy will begin shaking up the world! Take a deep breath now, because soon you may not be able to come up for air! Immediately after, in the Elbaf arc, two mysterious characters were seen spawning in the Aurust Castle of the country, and one of them looked remarkably like Shanks. In fact, this was quite easily the same person who fans knew met with the Gorosei in One Piece chapter 907 long ago. Things became even more interesting when Oda clearly refused to show the face of this individual to the fans, implying that he might not be Shanks after all.

In One Piece chapter 1137, finally, it was confirmed to the fans that this person was not Shanks but his evil twin, Shamrock Figarland, the eldest son of Garling Figarland. He serves as the commander of the Holy Knights, who fans know are a formidable bunch in One Piece. Shamrock’s powers were always going to be immense. This is especially because clearly, he is the main antagonist of the arc and there for Luffy to battle. Given that Luffy is a Yonko, Shamrock is most definitely going to be a Yonko-level individual as well. That said, the vast majority of Shamrock’s powers remained unknown until One Piece chapter 1138.
Finally, Oda has revealed to the fans that Shamrock Figarland has an ability, but not how the fans would assume it to be. Shamrock Figarland has not eaten a Devil Fruit, but it is his sword that’s consumed a Devil Fruit. This isn’t a foreign concept to One Piece, as fans know that Mr. 4’s gun, Lassoo, had a Devil Fruit, as did Funkfreed, Spandam’s sword. Similarly, Shamrock’s sword has a Devil Fruit ability too, and in his case, it is the Mythical Zoan Cerberus ability, which makes him a very ferocious fighter. This has, undoubtedly, raised many questions within the fans about Shanks as well.

Similarly to how Shamrock Figarland’s Sword had a Devil Fruit ability, it is possible that Shanks’s sword has a Devil Fruit ability as well. Fans know that Shanks doesn’t seem like the type to eat a Devil Fruit as he is more focused on Haki as his weapon. He also values the ability to swim. However, his sword having a Devil Fruit ability is completely different. It is entirely possible that Shanks’s sword has a mighty ability, especially since its name is based on a legendary creature.

In an SBS, Oda revealed that Shanks’s sword is called Griffon, and that this blade is powerful. More than that, Oda hinted at the fact that Shanks’s fighting style is special. Here is what Oda had to say about Shanks’s sword:

Clearly, Oda is implying that Shanks’s fighting style is very special and that it is, in some way, connected to Griffon. In Greek mythology, which is also where Oda derives his inspiration for Shamrock’s Cerberus, Gryphon is a creature with the tail and body, including legs, of a lion, and the head as well as wings of an eagle. This is a special creature with legendary might. Just like Shamrock’s Cerberus saber, Shanks’s saber could have the power of a Griffin, making him doubly special.

One of the many reasons why Shanks’s sword having a Gryphon Devil Fruit makes sense is because it doesn’t interfere with the Red Hair Pirates theme of not having a Devil Fruit. Shanks himself wouldn’t have any ability, but his sword would elevate his fighting style to the next level. Furthermore, fans have always been wondering as to how Shanks is stronger than Mihawk if Mihawk is the Greatest Swordsman.

The answer couldn’t be clearer. Shanks’s fans were always suggesting that his fighting style isn’t that of a true swordsman, which is something that even Oda implied heavily in the SBS. If Shanks’s sword was revealed to have a Gryphon Devil Fruit, it would automatically mean that he isn’t considered to be a traditional swordsman since his “sword” is a creature in battle. It would give Shanks a unique fighting style where he isn’t exactly using a blade to beat his enemies, even though he can.
All that, when compared to his Haki that is seemingly comparable to even Joy Boy, makes it clear that Shanks would be the undisputed strongest of the current era and on a completely different level, rivaled only by the likes of Roger and Joy Boy. It is only a matter of time before Oda reveals all the abilities that Shanks has, and what the significance of Gryohin is in the story. Fans simply need to sit back patiently and watch as Shanks goes all-out in the Final Saga.
