One Piece’s Final Saga has been extremely chaotic so far, with Egghead introducing fans to some of the most powerful villains and showing some incredibly intense fights. Now, Elbaf appears to setting up even more chaotic things, and given that the Straw Hat Pirates are not planning on running from here, this arc is going to be a lot longer. In fact, based on everything that Oda has introduced in One Piece’s Elbaf arc, both lore-wise and character-wise, it appears that the series is not going to end anytime soon.

One of the most interesting yet complicated parts to illustrate in One Piece is the ancient history of the world. Fans know that the One Piece world is quite special, in that the way it exists today isn’t how it always used to be. 900 years ago, the One Piece world was starkly different from what it is today, and back during this time, a very proud and prosperous kingdom existed which was technologically more advanced than even the current kingdoms of the world. This place, the name of which remains unknown, was home to Joy Boy, and he was the one who came to be known as the first pirate in history.
According to the Harley, our world has already been destroyed twice in the past. — Jarul
For some reason, the other kingdoms of the world opposed Joy Boy and created an alliance to fight him and the Ancient Kingdom. The result of the war was utter annihilation as the Ancient Weapons were unleashed, along with much else. The world sank 200 meters under the sea, and only fragments of what were once large continents now remained. Joy Boy died at the end of the Void Century, leaving behind the One Piece, his treasure, for someone to find and claim. This is precisely what’s been focused on in One Piece since the beginning. Roger became the first one to find Joy Boy’s treasure and started the Great Pirate Era. The end goal here is to definitely fulfill the Will of D and destroy the World Government. Oda has been slowly building towards this over the years, but in Elbaf, things took another turn.
In Elbaf, Oda revealed that the world has not been destroyed once, but twice, meaning there were two massive wars that were fought in the One Piece world long ago. Fans only know anything about the second war, while the first one remains to be covered in mystery. The fact that the first war’s secrets took so long to uncover for the Straw Hat Pirates just means that it is going to be even longer to uncover everything about what happened before. The only thing fans know is that the Sun God Nika was active during this time and he fought against some calamity, likely liberating the world in the process. Undoubtedly, Oda exploring two mysterious wars now instead of just one is set to make One Piece longer than ever before.

Oda Said The Series Was Originally Supposed To Be Luffy Vs Yonko
Another reason why One Piece is as long as it is, is down to the Shichibukai. These powerful Warlords are pirates who are essentially hired by the Government to act as deterrents against other pirates, in exchange for total freedom on the seas. Their only responsibility is to deter other pirates and aid the Government when needed. Initially, Oda did not want to involve them in the story, but one thing led to another and One Piece turned out the way it did. According to Oda, the Shichibukai made One Piece quite long. Here’s what he had to say about them:
The reason why ‘One Piece’ has been continually running for the past 20 years is because of the Seven Warlords of the Sea (the Shichibukai). ‘One Piece’ was initially intended to be a tale of fighting against the Four Emperors (the Yonko), wrapping up after just five years. It struck me that having these cool Seven Warlords of the Sea in the comic would be awesome; it was just a passing thought really. And then, just like a horror movie, it spiraled into such a long series!! Why couldn’t it be Five or Two Warlords of the Sea? I thought that “Seven Warlords” just sounded so much cooler!! Well, I’ve no lingering regrets since I’ve already drawn what I’ve wanted to draw. Just a little more!!” – Oda
Now, the Shichibukai system has been abolished, but a significant portion of these characters still exist as important characters in One Piece, meaning they will most definitely need more focus. But, even more importantly, Oda has now introduced yet another massive and powerful order in the form of the Holy Knights. Just as the Shichibukai made One Piece longer, the Holy Knights are going to do the same. Whereas there were just seven of the Warlords, the Holy Knights appear to be 9, which makes things even more complicated for Oda and ensures that the story will continue for long, despite being in the Final Saga.

As things stand, the end of One Piece isn’t anywhere near. For now, the story is in the Elbaf arc, which has only just begun.
When I was a kid, I thought to myself: Man I would love to draw a manga with the most hyped final stage! I wonder if I’m up to it! Now, we have only a tiny bit of Wano arc left, the preparations are almost done. Took me 25 years LOL. That said, it’s fine if you start reading from this point on, Because from this point on…it’ll be… (the) ONE PIECE!! The mysteries of this world, I’ll be drawing all of them! It’ll be super interesting! Fasten your seatbelt! And please stay with me for a bit longer! – Eiichiro Oda
Fans will most definitely get to see this arc last for around two years, if not more, and even then there are a bunch of other arcs to go through before Luffy even claims the One Piece. Following that, fans have the biggest part of the entire story, where the war against the Celestial Dragons will take place, and it is bound to be a long-lasting war considering that it took 100 years to conclude in the past. In either case, fans are in for a treat as One Piece continues its exciting journey.
One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read by the fans officially and for free on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus apps. The release date for the next chapter of One Piece, One Piece 1138, is set to be February 2, 2025.
