Gear 5 is Luffy’s latest power-up in One Piece and most likely the greatest one that he will ever receive. This power-up is incredible in every way and that is exactly why Luffy only managed to tap into it in the end game of the series. In the Wano Country arc, Luffy lost to Kaido several times and at the end of it, he ended up dying.
However, moments after, his heart started to beat differently and thus, the greatest power-up in One Piece and potentially all of fiction was born. Gear 5 is essential to Luffy and allows him to fight at the highest level. It also allows him to do some absolutely ridiculous things that he simply wouldn’t be able to do without this transformation. However, Gear 5 is not unstoppable. There are ways to subdue the power of Gear 5 and potentially even get the better of it.
The Power Of Gear 5
Gear 5 is a unique transformation that Luffy taps into after Awakening his Devil Fruit. This transformation allows Luffy to fight at his very best. In fact, Luffy even refers to this form as his very peak and, for that reason, Gear 5 holds tremendous importance. It is, essentially, clear that this form is Luffy’s last transformation. While he can still grow stronger, he is most likely not going to get another transformation from here on out. When one looks at what Gear 5 offers, however, there is no longer a need for another transformation.
Gear 5 makes Luffy’s body stronger and allows it to behave more like rubber than ever before. Furthermore, it allows him to fight with even more freedom and even lets him spread laughter and joy to wherever he goes. Gear 5 lets Luffy bring to life anything that he can imagine as imagination is the only limitation of this power. Luffy can create things out of nothing and even do impossible things such as run in the air, among other ridiculous abilities. The awakening of Gear 5 is quite unique in the sense that it possesses the Awakened powers of both Zoan and Paramecia. For instance, Luffy gains a transformation with his awakening and that is a mark of Zoan Awakenings.
However, at the same time, Luffy can also transfer his ability to his surroundings, which is a mark of the Paramecia Awakenings. What’s even more ridiculous is the fact that Luffy can also transfer his powers to other humans, making this ability one of a kind and almost unstoppable. This is precisely why even Kaido struggled when fighting against Luffy. However, there certainly are weaknesses to Gear 5.
Blackbeard In The Final Saga
While Luffy is incredibly free to do whatever he wants with his Devil Fruit power, one enemy that he needs to watch out for is Blackbeard. Blackbeard is a fellow Yonko to Luffy and he possesses a bounty of 3.996 billion berries. Blackbeard and Luffy share quite a deep history already. The two met in Jaya for the very first time and were at odds with each other already. Blackbeard then was responsible for capturing Ace and, in a way, led to his execution. Luffy and Blackbeard fought against each other in Impel Down and the clash was short-lived, however, it gave fans a glimpse of the future. In the Final Saga of One Piece, this fight will happen and Luffy is most certainly going to struggle against him to a great degree.
Blackbeard is the ultimate weakness of Gear 5, and much of that is down to his incredible Devil Fruit ability. Blackbeard possesses two Devil Fruit powers and the most dangerous ability that he has is the Yami Yami no Mi. His fruit is incredibly overpowered and also the most sinister of all fruits to ever exist. It is a Logia type of Devil Fruit, however, it doesn’t offer the intangibility of a Logia, simply because it sucks in everything, including that intangibility. This fruit gives Blackbeard the power of absolute darkness as well as infinite gravity. He can suck in anything like a black hole and even things like light cannot escape its grasp.
The biggest advantage of his devil fruit is that he can suck in the ability of other Devil Fruit users as well. In essence, Blackbeard can simply stop Luffy from tapping into the power of Gear 5 with his incredible Devil Fruit powers and, thus, becomes its ultimate weakness.
The Awakening Of Blackbeard
Of course, fans know that Blackbeard is weak to counterattacks. While he certainly can’t stop Devil Fruit abilities, he needs to be making physical contact with his enemies for that. For instance, during his fight against Ace, the latter figured out quickly that Blackbeard needed to make contact with him in order for his power to work. Ace opted to hit at the counter and dealt severe damage to Blackbeard, even piercing him with a lance through the heart at one point. However, much to his surprise, Blackbeard still survived, likely because his body is made differently.
Nonetheless, a stronger fighter could certainly hit Blackbeard on the counter and potentially defeat him. This was seen during the Marineford arc, when Blackbeard took on Whitebeard. The latter was able to hit him with Murakumogiri on the counter and had it not been for his sickness, Blackbeard would already have died. This opens up the room for Luffy to do the same. After all, he has incredibly overpowered abilities and the additional power to bring his imagination to life would certainly help him deal with a foe as strong as Blackbeard.
However, all that goes out the window as soon as Blackbeard awakens his Devil Fruit. While Logia powers have not yet been awakened, if Blackbeard exhibits the ability that Paramecia types do, then he will gain the power to spread his darkness to his surroundings. In that case, Blackbeard would not need to make direct contact with his enemies to nullify their powers. Whoever steps within his domain will immediately lose their Devil Fruit abilities and, essentially, if Blackbeard is awakened by the time he fights against Luffy, this would spell danger for the Straw Hat Pirate. Luffy would not even be able to tap into his Gears at all. For this reason, Blackbeard remains to be the biggest weakness of Gear 5 Luffy.
The Other Weaknesses
Of course, Blackbeard is not the only weakness that Luffy has. It must be kept in mind that Luffy is, after all, a Devil Fruit user, and standard Devil Fruit weaknesses certainly do apply to him as well. For example, being fully submerged in water renders Luffy defenseless. See Prism Stone, which gives off the same wavelength as the ocean itself, is another big weakness of any Devil Fruit user and Luffy certainly isn’t exempt from that. Vegapunk’s bubbles that he displayed recently, are another incredible weakness of all Devil Fruit users and, thus, Luffy as well.
There is also the threat of Imu over the entire world of One Piece. Fans have already seen that Imu does possess a Devil Fruit power and, in that case, this power could very well be the very opposite of Luffy. If Luffy can give rise to things out of nothing, perhaps, Imu can erase things out of existence with the power of nothingness.
Imu’s abilities certainly look very dangerous and fans will get to see more of that in the Final Saga of One Piece. What fans do know for sure at this moment is that Luffy and Imu will come face to face at one point and, when that happens, fans will find out if Imu possesses a power that might be a natural weakness of Luffy’s as well.
