Summary
- The symbol on Nika’s shield hints at ancient allies in conflict against the World Government.
- Alabasta, Wano, and other islands may be key allies for the Straw Hats in Final War.
- Theories suggest Elbaf, Fishman Island, Skypiea may be among the 8 kingdoms allied with Joyboy.
Chapter 1136 of the One Piece manga was an absolute game changer for many reasons, chief of which had to do with the mysteries of the Void Century, and even before this time, being expanded upon. The reveals here changed what fans of the franchise previously believed about Sun God Nika, which also provided context to Loki and his journey to become a Sun God that will eventually destroy the entire world.
The chapter also gave fans a look at one of the few official silhouettes of Nika presumably back in his first-ever iteration. This image showed him with a sword and a shield, the latter of which is a familiar symbol in the world of One Piece, so let’s go over Nika’s shield and the possible connections it has to the larger world and the various islands located in it.

The Mysterious Symbol On The Shield
A Familiar Symbol in the World

First Appearance | One Piece, Chapter 113, “It’s All Right!!!” |

Story Arc | Alabasta |
The mysterious symbol found on Nika’s shield has already gotten fans of the franchise theorizing like crazy. Of course, detractors of the theory of this symbol having any importance at all do make a good point, in that the symbol represents the sun itself, which is an obvious nod to Nika being known around the world as a Sun God. However, some eagle-eyed fans believe that there is much more to this than can be seen at first glance.
Although it was confirmed to be on Nika’s shield in Chapter 1136, the symbol itself has origins in the earliest stages of the story, since a variation of the motif of a great circle surrounded by 8 little ones can be seen on the flag of Alabasta, showing that this means more than just another symbol. In fact, while it is undoubtedly representative of a sun that signifies Nika as the Sun God, other theories that suggest this sun also represents Nika’s ancient allies.
I cannot abandon the will of those who came before me!
It’s known that the Ancient Kingdom was the greatest enemy of the 20 kingdoms that would go on to form the World Government. This symbol likely represents those who stood against the advance of the World Government, stating that the large circle in the middle indicates the Ancient Kingdom itself while the other 8 are its allies in the ancient war.
Other than Alabasta, this symbol is part of the Kozuki crest and the cross that was present in Kuma’s church in the Sorbet Kingdom. The Kozuki have always been the rulers of Wano, except for the brief amount of time Orochi and Kaido took over. They are also the ones who created the Poneglyphs in the first place, confirming themselves as one of Joyboy’s ancient allies in the conflict, and Kuma’s race, the Buccaneers, have always worshipped Sun God Nika. So, it can be surmised that their original island, as well as Wano, were both allied with Joyboy.

This symbol on Nika’s shield has 8 smaller circles, so it’s implied that 8 kingdoms helped in Joyboy’s war, or maybe even something similar in the original Nika’s time. So far, Alabasta, Wano, and the home island of the Buccaneer race are a part of this theory, meaning that there are 5 more waiting to be confirmed. Theories about these could include Fishman Island, which makes sense with its flag of the sun, Skypiea due to its history, and even Elbaf since the World Government has always wanted to conquer it.

What If This Is The Case?
Possibilities For The Future

If this ends up being the case at the end of the One Piece story, then fans already have an idea about the primary allies that will side with the Straw Hats in the Final War. Although they’ve made many important allies throughout their many journeys, the countries that have an ancient allegiance with the forces of the Nika will likely provide the most support in the final battles.
Moreover, this theory has many great supporting arguments with it since the arcs on these islands in question have often been tied to the Ancient Weapons or anything else regarding the Ancient Kingdom. For example, Alabasta was the first-ever location where fans heard anything about any Ancient Weapons or hints to a grander conspiracy, Wano being the actual location of Pluton, and Fishman Island being the location of Poseidon and the Noah, as well as the first mention of Joyboy himself.
