One Piece’s Egghead Island arc is absolutely sensational and each passing chapter has given something incredible to the fans to be excited about. The Egghead Island arc is unlike any other, in the sense that it has been focusing on not just the Straw Hat Pirates, but the changing era from the point of view of each major faction in the One Piece world. Fans have seen the Revolutionary Army take focus at times, while the Marines as well as the other members of the Worst Generation have become central to the plot on other occasions, and even other Yonko have gotten the attention that they deserve.
Of course, the Straw Hat Pirates are central to everything, however, fans are totally enjoying the fact that focus is also being shifted elsewhere. One of the most important parts of the Egghead Island arc has been Garp’s invasion of the Pirate Island, which took up the vast majority of the last few chapters of the story and resulted in a very tragic fate of the Hero of the Marines, Monkey D. Garp.
Garp’s Invasion Of The Pirate Island
The invasion of Pirate Island, led by Monkey D. Garp, traces itself back to Amazon Lily. On this island, the Marines attempted to capture the former Warlord, Boa Hancock, in an attempt that ended up failing miserably. Koby was present on this island and despite his tremendous strength, he wasn’t able to make much of a difference. Blackbeard came in and decided to use this opportunity to steal the Devil Fruit of Boa Hancock and he ended up being stopped by Rayleigh. A compromise was reached, which saw 800 Navy men and a battleship being taken by the Yonko Blackbeard.
Upon seeing many men being taken against their will, Koby decided to offer himself instead and was thus abducted by the Blackbeard Pirates. News eventually reached Garp and he decided to go on a rescue mission to the Pirate Island to save Koby, his beloved protege. Garp invaded the Pirate Island with powerful Marines of the next generation such as Kujaku, Prince Gruss, Helmeppo, and Tashigi, among others. The invasion saw Garp launch his battleship into the air and then arrive on the Pirate Island with a mighty powerful punch, destroying a huge portion of the town upon his arrival.
Garp Vs Kuzan
On the Pirate Island, the challenge for Garp was to free Koby and defeat every member of the Blackbeard Pirates at the same time. Of course, this was an uphill task, given that there were many commanders on the island, however, for Garp, it was certainly doable. The task would’ve been a success, that is, until fans found out about Kuzan being the 10th Titanic Captain of the Blackbeard Pirates. Being a former Admiral, Kuzan was incredibly powerful and more than capable of fighting against an old Garp. The two quickly engaged in a fierce battle where their past was explored and, at the same time, their powers came face to face as well.
For the vast majority of the fight, Garp appeared to be the superior one, however, after being tricked by the Blackbeard Pirates into getting stabbed by Shiryu, the playfield was leveled. Garp realized that he cannot make it out of the island and, at the same time, defeat every single one of them, which led to the decision of him staying behind. Had Kuzan not been on the island, this would have been quite easy for Garp to work with, given that the other commander simply wouldn’t possess enough strength to pose much of a challenge to him.
However, the presence of Kuzan changed everything. Garp Vs. Kuzan ended in the victory of the latter, given that he had to support of many Blackbeard Pirates with him. Comparing the individual performances of the two, however, Garp certainly came out on top.
The Tragic Fate Of Garp
After engaging in a duel with every single member of the Blackbeard Pirates present on the island, Garp was at his limits and used his last bit of energy to provide an opening for the next generation of the Marines to do something significant.
Garp was still able to overwhelm Kuzan with pure speed and power and charged towards Avalo Pizarro who was controlling the entire island. Using a powerful technique called the Galaxy Divide, Garp was able to split the skull of Hachinosu open and, thus, Koby and the other Marines had the opportunity to strut their stuff and show Garo why exactly he was right for placing his trust in them.
All of them combined to stop Pizzaro’s incoming arm and managed to sail away to safety. Meanwhile, Garp ended up staying behind on the island and was frozen by Kuzan. He was also stabbed right through his chest by an ice spare and his condition certainly does not look good. Judging by the last page of One Piece chapter 1088, Garp is being frozen just like Saul was and this means that his fate is not sealed just yet. That said, Garp, being one of the most beloved characters in the fandom, is no longer free and has now become a prisoner of the Blackbeard pirates, if he isn’t dead already.
Will Garp Survive?
When it comes to whether Garp will survive or not, two things must be taken into consideration. The very first thing is if the story will benefit from the death of Garp. When taking into consideration everything that this character has to offer, especially his interactions with his child, his proper flashback, as well as a glimpse of how the legendary Hero lived his life, there is a lot still left to be explored with the character of Monkey D. Garp. If Oda had to kill him off, fans would like to believe that he would have put more effort into fleshing out the character. Instead, his relationship with Kuzan was fleshed out as that was the only significant bit in the fight.
Garp still has a lot to offer and his death doesn’t serve much of a purpose at the moment. Garp staying behind certainly did give the next generation of Marines an incentive to grow stronger and live up to the expectations of their mentor.
At the same time, Garp being a prisoner of the Blackbeard Pirates also serves a greater purpose. Earlier in the Egghead Island arc, Blackbeard explained that having the Hero of the Marines as a prisoner is a valuable trading chip. The Marines simply cannot afford to stay quiet if Garp is a prisoner, because of his reputation as a symbol all over the world. Blackbeard wanted to trade Koby the Hero earlier for country status for Hachinosu. He will attempt to do something similar with Garp, given that he possesses even greater name and fame than Koby, and is one of the strongest Marines to have ever lived, if not the strongest.
This essentially confirms that Garp is not going to die and instead is going to be used as a bargaining chip by Blackbeard. Whether the Government accepts his term or not remains to be seen, however, given that the Government would not want to appear weak in the eyes of the common people, it is likely that they will instead call all their forces and go to war with Blackbeard on the Pirate Island. This would mean that the fans will have two wars on their hands to witness.
One is being fought by Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates against a part of the Navy and the other could be fought by Blackbeard and his crew against another part of the Navy for the control of Monkey D. Garp. This war will also likely see Sengoku and Tsuru being called into action, given that they are comrades of Garp. For now, Garp has likely been frozen to a point where he cannot do anything, however, later on, his captivity is going to serve a greater purpose in, perhaps, triggering a massive war in the New World, which could be the biggest after the Paramount War.
