The Void Century is at the very core of One Piece. Although Luffy’s journey to claim the One Piece is what the plot is all about, the One Piece itself is linked to the bigger mysteries of the world, such as the Void Century, which, in simple words, is a 100-year blank period about which nothing is known at all. The truth about the Void Century will eventually be revealed to the fans when Luffy goes on to claim the One Piece and become the Pirate King. Until then, only bits and pieces will be revealed to the fans, and these bits have already proven to be massive. Fans already knew that the World Government and the Ancient Kingdom were at the center of the conflict that took place during the Void Century, but at the same time, there was always going to be a deeper secret attached to it all. The Egghead Island Arc took great strides in that regard as, through the character of Vegapunk, fans found out a great deal.

Vegapunk revealed to the fans that the first pirate named Joy Boy was born in an elusive and magnificent kingdom full of riches long ago. However, 20 Kings banded together to fight the influence of his Kingdom and a 100-year war ensued. This 100-year war was absolutely massive, such that it led to the sinking and the destruction of the entire world. The world of One Piece sank by 200 meters during this 100-year period, and at the end of it all, Joy Boy died. The World Government was then established by the 20 kings who had collaborated and the Celestial Dragons are essentially their descendants. For one reason or another, all the information about the sinking of the world, the Ancient Kingdom, Joy Boy, the Ancient Weapons, and the people of the D, was hidden by the World Government and years upon years of propaganda, along with brainwashing, has led the world to where it is today. But, still, there could be a deeper secret attached to it all.

When thinking of the Void Century, one absolutely cannot avoid the confusion surrounding the spread of information. After all, archaic texts from bygone eras manage to be preserved rather easily, but an era just 800 years ago couldn’t possibly have been all covered up when the whole world sunk 200 meters underwater. This should’ve been common knowledge about the people of the world. This is even truer when taking into consideration the fact that there exists the Giant race in the world of One Piece. This race lives past 300 years. In fact, the oldest Giant right now, Jarul, is 408 years old, meaning Jarul’s parents could’ve been kids in the Void Century, or his grandparents could’ve been fighters in this era. For Jarul and many other Giants to not know absolutely anything about this era is bizarre. But, there could be an explanation, and it lies in the Memo Memo no Mi.

For the fans who don’t remember, the Memo Memo no Mi is a powerful Paramecia type of Devil Fruit that is currently in the possession of Pudding, the 36th daughter of the Charlotte Family. But, long ago, during the Void Century, this Devil Fruit could’ve found its way into the possession of someone from the 20 Kings side. The power of this Devil Fruit is simple, but equally dangerous. It allows the user to manipulate the memories of others, cut and erase what they want, and even create wholly fake memories altogether. Fans saw this Devil Fruit being utilized to its utmost best in the Whole Cake Island arc of One Piece. But, Pudding could only use its abilities on a single person, and with time, on a bunch. That said, a key aspect that needs to be taken into consideration is Devil Fruit Awakening.
The reason why ‘One Piece’ has been continually running for the past 20 years is because of the Seven Warlords of the Sea (the Shichibukai). ‘One Piece’ was initially intended to be a tale of fighting against the Four Emperors (the Yonko), wrapping up after just five years. It struck me that having these cool Seven Warlords of the Sea in the comic would be awesome; it was just a passing thought really. And then, just like a horror movie, it spiraled into such a long series!! Why couldn’t it be Five or Two Warlords of the Sea? I thought that “Seven Warlords” just sounded so much cooler!! If the former user of the Memo Memo no Mi managed to awaken the Devil Fruit, then, after a population cleanse caused by the mass flooding, where millions upon millions would’ve died, the remnants could easily have been brainwashed by the user of the Devil Fruit, using the awakening, where the effects would’ve been widespread and contact, along with a pair of scissors, wouldn’t be necessary. In this scenario, the information would’ve been successfully hidden based on the fact that the World Government killed millions, and used memory-altering powers to change the face of the world.

Regardless of whether or not the information pertaining to the Void Century was erased using a memory-altering Devil Fruit, fans know that the Final Saga of One Piece is where it’ll all be uncovered. This is the most exciting part of the story and as soon as Luffy reaches Laugh Tale and becomes the Pirate King, fans will definitely hear the whole story behind what transpired during the Void Century, and this information will likely be propagated to the whole world, just as Vegapunk’s message was.
