The Gomu Gomu no Mi is an incredibly overpowered Devil Fruit that belongs to none other than the protagonist of One Piece, Luffy. This Devil Fruit is actually the very first one that fans get to see in the story. Luffy eats it at the beginning of the Romance Dawn arc and has been continuously training its powers ever since. While Luffy made this Devil Fruit as overpowered as it is currently, the true aspect of its powers was revealed to the fans only recently in the story.

Fans found out that the real name of the Gomu Gomu no Mi is Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. The awakening of this Devil Fruit gave Luffy immense powers that can only be matched by a handful of other powers in One Piece. What’s even more surprising is that this fruit has the powers of both Paramecia and Zoan.

The True Form Of The Gomu Gomu no Mi

In the Wano arc, fans finally found out what the true nature of the Gomu Gomu no Mi is. This Devil Fruit has long been hunted by the World Government because they fear what it is capable of. According to the Five Elders, this Devil Fruit is one that the World Government has been after for 800 years now. Every single time, this Devil Fruit has evaded them. It is almost as if it has a will of its own, which wouldn’t be a stretch since all Zoan powers have their own will. Vegapunk went on to explain that Zoan powers can even overwhelm the user if they are not competent enough. This means Luffy’s Devil Fruit has the power of Nika within itself.

12 years ago, this Devil Fruit was finally procured by the World Government and was being carried on a Government vessel guarded by the CP9. Somehow, Shanks found out about this and attacked the vessel, taking the Devil Fruit for himself. Then, he made his way to Foosha Village, where, eventually, Luffy mistook this fruit for dessert and ended up consuming it, gaining the powers of rubber perpetually. Luffy has, since then, begun his pirating journey and shaken the entire world to its very core. In Wano, he finally awakened this Devil Fruit, and its true power was brought forth. It was confirmed that this fruit is actually a Mythical Zoan-type fruit.

The Mythical Zoan Transformation

All Zoan Devil Fruits have a special Awakening which is very different from the Paramecia Awakenings that fans have seen in the story. Zoan Awakenings are marked by a unique transformation. This was mentioned by Kaido himself when he fought Luffy after the latter awakened his Devil Fruit powers. Kaido was under the impression that was a Paramecia Devil Fruit user, however, his unique transformation sparked curiosity in the Yonko. He soon came to the conclusion that Luffy might not just be a Paramecia but his powers might go beyond that. Luffy’s Gear 5, which is marked with an all-white transformation and free-wheeling combat, is a Mythical Zoan Awakening.

Fans have also seen other Zoan Awakenings in the story. These include the likes of Rob Lucci, who also gained a completely new transformation, as well as Kaku, whose giraffe power was taken to the next level with a unique transformation as well. Kaido himself had unique transformations, and these could’ve been Awakening, however, it was never officially confirmed what exactly these transformations were and where they came from. Nonetheless, it was established during Luffy’s fight against Kaido that Zoan Awakenings are usually better transformations.

The Paramecia Power

While Luffy, being a Mythical Zoan, had the power of a completely new transformation when awakened, he also received some unique powers that he should not have access to. On top of gaining a transformation, Luffy also gained the power to spread his ability to his surroundings. This is the awakening of the Paramecia types that fans have seen in the story. Every Paramecia Awakening has the ability to affect their surroundings with their powers. For instance, Doflamingo was able to turn his surroundings into string. Similarly, Katakuri was able to do the same, only in his case, the surroundings turned into mochi. According to Kaido, being able to spread the ability of the Devil Fruit to the immediate surroundings is a sign of a Paramecia awakening.

In the case of Luffy, he was able to spread rubber to his surroundings as well. The rooftop of Onigashima became a bouncing castle for him to have fun on and, what’s even more bizarre is that Luffy was even able to transfer his powers to other living beings, which is simply unheard of. So far, no person has shown Awakening powers get transferred to other living things, especially humans or animals. For instance, Doflamingo could not transfer his string powers to humans. Katakuri could not turn anyone into mochi, however, Luffy, for some reason, cannot just transfer his power to his surroundings, despite being a Mythical Zoan, but also to other living beings, which is preposterous.

Why The Fruit Displays Both Powers

Luffy uses Gear 5

Of course, this aspect of Luffy’s power is something that Oda has not revealed the secret of just yet, however, fans can deduce what the reason for this could be. After all, One Piece is all about theorizing and having fun. There are two main reasons as to why Luffy could have the powers of both a Paramecia as well as a Mythical Zoan fruit. The very first of these reasons is that Luffy’s Devil Fruit simply does not fit in a regular Mythical Zoan category. For instance, most Mythical Zoan fruits have special powers that the user can utilize at times. This has been seen with Sengoku being able to produce shockwaves or, in the case of Marco, using the blue flames of resurrection. In Luffy’s case, the unique Mythical Zoan ability he gained was the power of a rubber body.

However, his body permanently turned into rubber, which cannot be said for the other Devil Fruits. The perpetual aspect of this power makes it different from other Mythical Zoans and, it can be said that this fruit is actually a hybrid of both Paramecia and Zoan powers. For that reason, Luffy is able to get the best of both worlds and gain a transformation, as well as transfer his powers to others.

Even in that case, it does not explain how Luffy can transfer his powers to other living beings, which is where the second reason comes in. There is actually a very simple truth to how he is able to pull this off and it has been in front of the fans for the entire time. The truth is, Luffy has a power that can only be limited by his imagination. Whatever he can imagine, he can do. He has been seen running in the air or even producing things out of nothing, as he did when he created goggles out of nothing during the fight against Lucci. If Lucy can imagine turning someone else’s body into rubber, then he can certainly pull that off. If Luffy can imagine turning his surroundings into rubber, then he can certainly pull that off because this is a Devil Fruit that breaks all logic and, at the same time, is also the most ridiculous ability to ever exist. It might not be the most overpowered, but it boggles the mind for sure.
