Shampoo’s Appearance

Shampoo has luxuriously long purple hair with bangs, two front strands secured by gold hairpins, and two buns in the back. In combat, she wears a long pink blouse, pink pants, and a red breastplate with gold trim. However, she’ll remove the breastplate when not in combat, like when she sneaks into Ranma’s bed in season 1, episode 11, “You I Love.” Shampoo’s secondary outfit, which she wears in season 1, episode 12, “Shampoo Cleans Up,” is a red cheongsam gown with gold trim.

Additionally, Shampoo is one of the few female characters in season 1 that visibly wears makeup. She dons an intense shade of red eye shadow. In comparison, the other female characters may wear eyeliner, but that’s about it.

Shampoo’s Personality

Shampoo’s Chinese Amazon upbringing makes her a competitive, prideful, and driven woman. Her drive stems from a sense of honor to the matriarchal society she hails from. In her tribe, women must become fierce warriors who can take down any foe. When a woman from outside the tribe defeats her in combat, Shampoo must redeem herself by killing said woman.

The immense passion Shampoo brings into combat extends into her other interests, especially romantic ones. While she will not allow women to best her in battle, Shampoo will devote herself to any man who can hold their own against her. Once she falls in love with someone, she never lets go, following that person to the ends of the Earth. Unfortunately, that same romantic passion makes Shampoo vulnerable to heartbreak.

While Shampoo means serious business, she also has a playful side. For instance, there’s a moment in “Shampoo Cleans Up” when Shampoo uses panda paw gloves to trick Ranma into thinking she is Genma during a “Guess Who?” game. After she fools Ranma, Shampoo gleefully exclaims, “You fell for it! You fell for it!”

Shampoo’s Fighting Style

Shampoo trained in the Joketsuzoku martial arts style practiced by the women in her village. One of the Joketsuzoku style’s most prominent techniques is taking advantage of pressure points via moxibustion. For instance, Shampoo wipes Ranma from Akane Tendo’s memory by scrubbing specific pressure points on her scalp with a special shampoo.

Regarding weaponry, Shampoo is a master of chui, a pair of Chinese maces consisting of metal rods sporting metal orbs at their ends. Due to their immense weight, one must possess great strength to wield chui. The chui’s requirements may explain why Shampoo is strong enough to break through walls at a whim.

Shampoo’s Personal Life

Close

Shampoo is a warrior raised among the Joketsuzoku women, an established heavy-hitter in her tribe. However, after being defeated by the girl Ranma, Shampoo travels to Japan to seek revenge. To her surprise, this mission leads to a one-sided love affair with boy Ranma.

Shampoo’s Early Life and Upbringing

Shampoo grew up in the village of Joketsuzoku (translation: “Village of Women Heroes”). However, most English translations describe the village as the “Chinese Amazons.” Joketsuzoku is among the Bayankala Mountains, near Jusenkyo Springs.

The Joketsuzoku tribe operates as a matriarchy in which women train to become fierce combatants. However, the tribe does not disparage men as long as they are strong enough to hold their own against a Joketsuzoku woman. Shampoo trained under the tutelage of her great-grandmother Cologne. However, Cologne’s role in the Joketsuzoku matriarchy is unclear.

Giving Ranma the “Kiss of Death”

Shortly after Ranma and Genma’s cursing incident in the Jusenkyo Springs, the pair traveled to a remote village with their guide. Upon wandering in to this village, a starving Ranma (in girl form) helped himself to an assortment of food laid out on a ceremonial table. Little did he know that food was a prize intended for the winner of a Joketsuzoku martial arts competition.

Shampoo, greatly insulted, called out Ranma for munching on her rightful victory feast. Ranma nonchalantly offered to battle Shampoo for the food, and she accepted. Within seconds of beginning their bout, Ranma kicked Shampoo out of bounds, embarrassing her in front of the Joketsuzoku tribe. Shampoo responded to this humiliation by giving Ranma the “Kiss of Death,” a vow declaring she would follow Ranma to the ends of the Earth to kill him.

Shampoo’s Current Life and Infatuation with Boy Ranma

Ranma manages to shake Shampoo’s trail and hide from her for several months. However, the undeterred warrior ambushed him after the conclusion of the Charlotte Cup arc. In Shampoo’s first ambush at Kolhotz High School, girl Ranma hides in a locker. However, when Shampoo encounters boy Ranma at the Tendo abode, the two are forced to duel. Ranma defeats Shampoo once more, but she responds to this new defeat with a passionate kiss on the lips.

As Joketsuzoku law dictates, any female outsider who defeats a tribe member must die to avenge the tribe’s honor. However, if a male outsider defeats a Joketsuzoku warrior, she must marry him. Thus, this new kiss is a declaration of love. Akane, who witnesses this interaction, breaks of her and Ranma’s engagement and storms away in a huff.

Tensions between Shampoo and Akane continue to rise as Akane’s jealousy toward her grows. Shampoo aggravates this tension by cozying up to Ranma, up to the point of sneaking into his bed. However, the feud reaches a tipping point when Shampoo serves a cooked P-chan to Ranma at school. Akane rescues her pet pig, and Shampoo gives her the “Kiss of Death” in response. The two fight outside, and Shampoo erases Akane’s memories of Ranma with a special shampoo.

Once Ranma discovers the nature of Akane’s amnesia and how to stop it, he requests the remedy shampoo from Shampoo. She offers to grant his request under the condition that he kills girl Ranma – an impossible task. Fortunately, Ranma jolts Akane’s memory without the antidote by teasing her into a rage.

When Shampoo observes that Akane regained her memories, she decides to kill her. However, before she can do so, Ranma interrupts her fatal attack. In a last-ditch effort to save Akane, Ranma douses himself in cold water, revealing his gender-swapping curse to Shampoo. Crying from shock and confusion, the heartbroken young woman leaves Ranma, marking the end of season 1.
