Rent-a-Girlfriend may not have the best reputation among many anime fans, but it presents an interesting take on romance and dating culture. The main protagonist, Kazuya Kinoshita, originally had an actual girlfriend, but after getting dumped, he looked to a rental girlfriend service to ease the pain. This marked the start of his relationship with Chizuru, a beautiful girl with issues of her own. As their relationship continues to evolve, other girls come into the mix, and it has become a constant source of debate as to who should end up with Kazuya.
Though Kazuya is not exactly riddled with good qualities, many of his love interests genuinely care for him and deserve to be given some consideration. Even though Chizuru is seen as his main target, she may not necessarily be the best option for a relationship. 5 Mami Nanami
Mami was Kazuya’s first girlfriend, and she broke up with him after only dating for a month. She is a manipulative and petty individual who attempts to appear sweet and innocent in public. She is also popular, attracting the admiration and affection of many boys. However, she only ever dates for a while and dumps them soon after.
After splitting up with Kazuya, Mami held some jealousy and spite, seeing he moved on so quickly. As a result, she constantly pries into his relationships and attempts to split him and Chizuru up. She resorts to underhanded methods and only has her own interests at heart. Mami has terrible personality traits and could never complement Kazuya properly. Though Kazuya doesn’t have the best character, he has shown himself to be a good person at heart and is not deserving of a conniving girl like Mami.
4 Sumi Sakurasawa
Sumi is a shy and soft-spoken girl who was also introduced to Kazuya as a rental girlfriend. She got into the business in hopes of overcoming her shyness and was recommended to Kazuya by Chizuru as a good way to practice. On their first date, Kazuya did such a good job that she wished to see him again, with different emotions forming within her.
She is a hardworking and determined individual who puts great effort into all of her endeavors. Despite being able to utter only a few words, she can be very helpful to those around her, especially Kazuya, who she tries to aid in sorting out his feelings as well as offer emotional support. Sumi would ultimately be good for Kazuya, but her indecisive and timid nature would not match up well with Kazuya’s cowardliness and indecision.
3 Ruka Sarashina
Ruka is a headstrong and straightforward girl determined to have her way no matter the circumstances. She was born with an irregularity in her heart that makes it beat slower than normal, making it difficult to perform some tasking activities. In hopes of easing her condition, she was in constant search of someone who could make her heart beat faster, and after seeing Kazuya accomplish that feat, she became hopelessly attached to him.
Kazuya met Ruka through a rental girlfriend service as well, but Ruka eventually wanted more than that. Characteristic of her straightforward nature, Ruka barged her way into Kazuya’s life, getting involved with his family and even working the same job as him. Though Ruka can be selfish at times, she is an otherwise good-natured girl that even Kazuya admitted would be a wonderful girlfriend for most people. The brown-haired protagonist, however, has his sights set on a different girl, and Ruka’s personality, more often than not, just drives him into a corner.
2 Mini Yaemori
Mini is a childlike girl who is optimistic and carefree. She is Kazuya’s neighbor as well as a cosplayer and streamer. She is also one of the few girls to meet Kazuya through normal means and not a rental girlfriend service. Mini’s relationship with Kazuya is that of camaraderie and friendship, giving him help and advice with regard to Chizuru, as well as helping him improve as a person. Kazuya’s dynamic with Mini is a special one, as many of his other relationships are laced with tension and misunderstandings.
Mini’s carefree nature makes for refreshing scenes, which help not only the audience but also the characters involved. Chizuru is Kazuya’s main love interest and the first girl he ever rented. She is both fashionable and beautiful, turning heads wherever she goes. Though she gives off an unattainable air and adopts a prideful stance, she is a kind-hearted person who constantly helps people in need. She also has dreams of becoming an actor and was inspired by her grandmother, who is a very important figure to her.
Chizuru and Kazuya have been through a lot together, even though the latter only employed her as a way of temporarily soothing his broken heart. Their lives have become intertwined, and they have developed a bond deeper than both would initially have thought possible. Chizuru’s caring nature does well to make up for Kazuya’s shortcomings and low-self esteem, while she is also understanding of his impulsive actions. Furthermore, she recognizes his capacity to eventually do what is right and is understanding enough to forgive him when he slips up.
