Re: Zero can have questionable moments with extreme violence and heartfelt moments between two characters. While there is plenty of action and theorizing, underneath the cheerful characters lie moments of abuse and domestic violence. While in some cases, a little interference allowed for growth, in others, control and obedience were demanded.

Although many of these moments may be missed as the series tells its story, in Season 3, the anime clearly demonstrates the realities of domestic violence, the trauma, and the long-lasting effects of it.

Domestic violence occurs when a partner or spouse displays aggressive or violent behavior toward the other party. Along with this aggression, the violent spouse will thus begin to control various aspects of their partner or spouse’s life; these can include financial, physical, and social isolation, among many variations, to claim power and control.

Emotional manipulation is a common means of establishing control in Re:Zero. Throughout the series, there are a variety of cases of domestic violence. However, at times, it may not be as clear-cut as some information regarding the series in the anime is revealed at later times, thus providing a clear image of the relationship between the characters at a later date.

Re:Zero features unique characters who grapple with challenges often linked to the Witches of Sin. While the anime clearly shows cases of domestic violence, such as Regulus Corneas in Season 3, it also demonstrates Stockholm Syndrome in characters such as Ram.

Ram and Rem came into Roswaal L. Mathers’s servitude after the Witch’s Cult burned down their village. Upon learning that Roswaal had prior knowledge of the attack and did nothing to prevent the destruction of the Oni Clan, she soon despised and wished to seek revenge on him. However, there were a few things that stood in her way. Roswaal supplied mana to Ram through a contract, and Rem was at his mercy. Although Roswaal used Ram and Rem throughout their servitude, Ram developed feelings for Roswaal. It could also be said that Roswaal groomed Rem, as she was much younger when she became his maid, and developed feelings, as he had lived significantly longer than her.

Despite Ram’s growing affection for Roswaal, he used the twins for missions, failed to prevent their village’s destruction, and pushed her into a contract for mana in exchange for helping defeat the Divine Dragon. Throughout their time together, her loyalty and care became authentic; however, this does not erase the reality that she had to commit to a contract with him to obtain mana and seek revenge for her fallen brethren.

One of the more extreme cases of domestic violence that has been portrayed in Re:Zero occurred in Season 3 with Regulus Corneas. Domestic violence can look different in various cases and, at times, hard to notice if you don’t see the signs. Regulus Corneas, who portrays himself as a narcissist and misogynist, clearly demonstrates how he views women as lesser than himself.

  • Regulus would dress his wives in whatever clothes he deemed appropriate.
  • Regulus referred to his wives by number, invalidating their identity as mere statistics of his many marriages.
  • Regulus forbade his wives to smile or show emotion after they were wedded.

Sometime throughout his life, Regulus will become the Sin Archbishop of Greed, becoming more egotistical and entitled as time goes on. At one point, he forcibly married his childhood love, killing her family in the process. However, this action mentally broke her, and thus, she never laughed or smiled, and after some time, she committed suicide. Although Regulus already had a twisted mentality, this event likely broke him as he went on to have 290 wives after her. During all his marriages, he forbade his wives to smile after they were wed, stating that they would ruin their faces with the expression.

Good girl. You’ve stopped smiling, just like I told you to.

Regulus’s twisted views on marriage demonstrate how domestic violence can break one’s partner or spouse. As mentioned by Number 184 to Emilia in Episode 7 of Season 3, many of Regulus’s wives were taken by force, often with Regulus killing their families and many others in the village. As Regulus was incredibly powerful, thanks to his Authority of Greed, this power and control over others would fuel his entitlement.

You shall not laugh, cry, rage, nor rejoice! Your sole duty is to look adorable.

As many of his wives are mentally broken and mere shells of themselves, they know better than to disobey his orders, as it would result in a swift death. This demonstrates the reality of an abusive relationship and how, more often than not, partners or spouses are too afraid to escape or retaliate out of fear of being attacked. While they recognize that help is offered, their will to live has been crushed as they no longer have a home to return to after all their families have been killed; all they can do is obey their “Lord Husband.”

Although Natsuki Subaru has claimed to love Emilia unconditionally, there’s no doubt that he, too, is at fault of this. As Subaru becomes enchanted with Emilia in Season 1 and possibly falls in love as he desperately wants to save her and himself from certain death at the hands of Elsa. After the events have concluded, he tries desperately to show his love and affection to Emilia; in other words, Subaru attempts to love-bomb Emilia, attempting to get closer to her by pulling on her heartstrings.

While Subaru’s love was genuine, Emilia was facing her own internal troubles at the time, as she had yet to face her past and bring down her walls. Although Subaru has shown love and care for Emilia, forcing her to see his point of view is a type of manipulation. Ultimately, his consistency wore her down.

Although, in this case, Emilia needed to stop isolating herself from others, and Subaru was the best person to do so, it does not change the fact that he attempted to start a relationship with her when she was unwilling to do so. While it has turned out for the best as Emilia no longer isolated herself and has begun to open up to others, it does not take away from the fact that Subaru latched himself onto Emilia and sometimes humiliated her in important events.
