Scream 7 filming is finally underway, and director Kevin Williamson celebrated the occasion with a new behind-the-scenes photo.
Scream 7 has had a tumultuous journey getting to production. The sequel was announced shortly after the sixth installment was released, with Christopher Landon tapped to direct and Meslissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega set to reprise their respective roles as Sam and Tara Carpenter. However, the writers were forced to retool the film after Barrera was fired from Scream 7 over social media posts in support of Palestine that Spyglass Media deemed anti-Semitic (an accusation Barrera and many fans refute) and Ortega dropped out shortly after, reportedly over scheduling conflicts and salary disputes. The project is back on track with Scream franchise creator Kevin Williamson (who penned 3 films in the franchise and produced all 6) on board to direct and Neve Campbell reprising her role as Sidney Prescott after sitting out of the sixth installment.

Scream 7 filming has started, and Williamson posted a behind-the-scenes photo on Instagram to celebrate the occasion. The image features the new Scream 7 logo, which has more blood splattered on the letters than in previous films. In the caption, Williamson admitted he wasn’t supposed to post about Scream 7 but hoped Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media would forgive him. The director commended the Scream 7 cast and crew for bringing “their A-game” and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to helm the film. He also noted that director Wes Craven, who helmed the first 4 Scream films before he died in 2015, was on his mind the whole day. “The profound impact he has had on my life and career is endless,” Williams said of Craven. “What a day! I can’t wait for tomorrow!”
Scream 7 plot details are thin, but recent casting news provides insight into what to expect when Ghostface returns. Isabella May joined the Scream 7 cast as Sidney Prescott’s daughter, and McKenna Grace joined the film shortly after. While Grace’s character wasn’t confirmed when her casting was announced, rumors claimed Grace was playing Sidney Prescott’s daughter in Scream 7. The role may have gone to May instead, though it is just as likely that Sidney will have two daughters in the film. Either way, it seems Ghostface’s killing spree will be a Prescott family affair.
There are fan concerns regarding Scream 7. Many fans consider Barrera’s firing unjustified, and while calls to boycott Scream 7 in response to her exit have quieted, they could resume now that the film is in production and/or as it inches closer to release. Some fans also worry that including so many characters from past films alongside the newer actors from the recent installments could result in Scream 7 being a mess. Of course, fans must wait until Scream 7 hits theaters to see if these fears are warranted.
Scream 7 is scheduled to be released in theaters on February 27, 2026.
