Severance Season 2’s Wild Helly Theory Makes Perfect Sense

Spoilers are ahead for Season 2 of Severance.

Summary

  • Helly may be Helena Eagan in disguise, spying on the MDR department.
  • The absence of an elevator ding for Helly hints at a possible identity switch.
  • Helena’s cold demeanor signals she may be the villain of Severance Season 2.

Apple TV+ is taking fans back to the Severed Floor. Nearly three years after Severance first put a dystopian spin on the workplace drama, the Macrodata Refinement team is back to doing the hard work so their ‘Outies’ don’t have to. Severance season 2 has just begun, but already, there are some swirling theories that could lead to a reveal that tops the season 1 finale.

At the core of Severance is the relationship between the MDR workers, especially Mark S. (Adam Scott) and Helly R. (Britt Lower). Season 1 ended with the shocking reveal that Helly R.’s Outie was Helena Eagan — the daughter of current Lumon Industries CEO, Jame Eagan (Michael Siberry). With Helena out for herself and the interests of Lumon, it’s led to a worrying theory about where Helly’s arc will take her in season 2.

Severance Season 2’s Helly Theory

Helly and Mark in Severance season 2

Audiences have a lot of questions: why there’s a room filled with baby goats, what Severance’s obsession with pineapples is, why Mark is crucial to completing ‘Cold Harbor,’ and what’s happening on the Testing Floor with Gemma/Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman). But to speculate on a few answers, there’s a popular theory that Helly and Mark’s reunion is part of something more sinister. To get Mark back to work, the Lumon board agreed to give him the rest of his team back. But what if it’s not Helly R. down there with them? What if, instead, it’s Helena Eagan herself? Having Helena in her unsevered form would allow her to spy on the rebellious MDR department, while allowing the department to think she’s an ally among them.

During January 24’s “Goodbye Mrs. Selvig.” fans noticed that the elevator didn’t ding when Heleana went down to the Severed Floor and was supposed to transition into Helly. The episode ends with each member of the team (in their Outie form) collecting their ID from their lockers and heading down in the elevator. Although a second ding signaled the transition of Mark, Irving (John Turturro), and Dylan (Zach Cherry) from Outie to Innie, Helly doesn’t get a second ding. The idea took off on Reddit, with one sharp-eared viewer saying: “The elevator didn’t f***ing ding for Helly.”

Adding fuel to the theory, Helena looked unimpressed when she went into the lift and headed to the Severed Floor. If it was really Helly going down there, then why would she care? The Eagan heiress has proved she’s committed to Lumon and the legacy of Severance, choosing to go severed for her own pet project and vowing to make Helly’s life miserable if she didn’t comply. Others point out how Helly has been acting a little peculiar. Helly lied about what she saw during the Overtime Contingency hijack, and while that might be to keep her Eagan heritage a secret, the information could have been used to help her comrades.

Elsewhere, it’s been noted that Helly didn’t immediately hug Mark when they were reunited in the first episode, then struggled to find her computer switch. It all fits together with the idea that this is Helena’s first trip to the Severed Floor. Someone else wrote on Reddit:

I suspected she was Helena the whole episode, from the very moment she didn’t hug Mark back immediately…It’s gonna get SO ugly when the truth comes out.

Helly R.’s rebellion and the fact she could’ve tanked Lumon means Helena has no need for her Innie anymore. While fans will be sure to look out for more cues that Helly R. isn’t who she claims to be, there’s the question of what Helena Eagan’s endgame is here.

What is Helena Eagan Up To in Severance Season 2?

Helena Eagan Severance season 1 finale

Unlike the problematic Helly R., Helena is Lumon through and through. MDR was running just fine before Helly arrived there, so taking her out of the equation should help Mark focus on Cold Harbor as long as Helena can keep him on track. As Mark reiterated that he wouldn’t go back to work without the entire team, it’s likely that Helena couldn’t risk sending Helly back down there, and instead took up the task herself. The cast has already debunked Severance’s cloning theory, so Helena descending makes the most sense.

In the new and improved MDR, it was Helly R. who pointed out the old security cameras were gone. Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) said that they aren’t being monitored anymore, but it would be in Helena’s best interests for the rest of the team to let their guard down and think they’re able to speak freely about any potential rebellions. Fans have also learned not to trust anything Milchick says, while the friendly new Lumon is clearly a ruse. Importantly, if Helena has replaced Helly in Macrodata Refinement, it would put a clever twist on the new “Lumon is Listening” mantra.

There’s also the question of what’s happened to her Helly R. persona. It seems unlikely that this side of her has been killed off, meaning that part of Helena might have been confined to the shadowy Testing Floor with Ms. Casey. It’s no coincidence that Irving’s Outie continuously paints the ominous red elevator, or that this imagery now features prominently in the new credits. Executive producer and director Ben Stiller has confirmed the credits could contain clues to season 2, telling The Severance Podcast:

It was fun to think about, okay, what could it be for season 2 that is maybe more specific, has more Easter eggs, and more little nods to the season that people might not even appreciate until the season is over and they look back at it.

Looking closely at the new credits, there’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment when Ms. Casey is seen in the lift and then turns into Helly, while the final moment includes Mark descending in the lift. This has sparked the idea that he’ll be looking for both his wife and Helly R. in season 2.

As for whether Helena will be rumbled before the season’s end, it’s obvious the sharp-witted Irving didn’t believe her OTC lie about coming across a night gardener. It’s possible that Helena will have a change of heart and see that the Innies have a right to their own lives, but with her cold demeanor making her the opposite of the downtrodden Helly R., she’s looking increasingly like the show’s de facto villain. Even the unhinged Mrs. Selvig/Ms. Cobel (Patricia Arquette) is struggling with her own morality by knowing the truth about what happened to Mark’s wife, whereas Helena shows no sign of remorse toward the Innies. While many might have been rooting for Mark and Helly in season 2, that will all change if it’s revealed its Helena down there on the Severed Floor.
