Uncle Ben’s death is a defining moment in Peter Parker’s character arc and has happened in multiple Spider-Man adaptations.
The Spectacular Spider-Man is no exception, showing the lead-up to Ben Parker’s fatal shooting. Peter, after competing in a wrestling competition as Spider-Man, refuses to stop a mugger, stating that it’s “not my problem”. The sequence unfolds in black and white, choosing not to show the shooting that took Ben’s life but the devastated reaction of both Peter and Aunt May with a haunting piano score and the sound of May crying. It’s a sequence that conveys the raw emotion of a powerful moment and is worthy of a place on this list.

MTV’s Spider-Man: The New Animated Series was released in 2003, intended as a direct continuation of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man. The series implemented cell-shaded animation techniques with darker storytelling and introduced Indira Diamonji, known as Indy, as a reporter who began dating Peter Parker.
Indy, however, met a tragic end. After being tricked by the Gaines Twins, Spider-Man attacks Indy, believing her to be Roxanne Gaines, resulting in Indy falling from a rooftop to her death. The most heartbreaking element of this death is it causes MJ and the city of New York to lose faith in Spider-Man, seeing him as a villain. This forces Peter into hanging up the suit and vowing never to be Spider-Man again. This would have led to a huge plot line in season two. However, the show was canceled and this was never explored, meaning the show ended with a heartbreaking death and Spider-Man not returning to be a superhero.

Mary Jane Watson – Spider-Man: The Animated Series
The Most Heartbreaking Death In An Animated Spider-Man Series
Close
Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson have been a comic book power couple for over half a century, and MJ has the most powerful death in an animated Spider-Man series.
Following Peter and MJ’s wedding, MJ is kidnapped by the clone of Hydro-Man whilst on their honeymoon. Peter goes to save MJ but as he attempts to save her, she begins to evaporate alongside Hydro-Man’s clone. This forces Peter to reconcile that his wife is a clone and is dying in front of his eyes. Peter is given little opportunity to grieve as he is forced to leave for secret wars but is haunted by the events from that moment forward. A heartbreaking death for a much-loved character and the most tragic in all the Spider-Man animated series.
