Spring 2024 Preview: Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Part 2

Premiering in the Spring 2024 anime season, the second cour of Season 2 will continue Rudeus’ journey beyond his time at Ranoa Magic Academy.

Highlights

  • Season 2 Part 2 of Mushoku Tensei brings new director Ryosuke Shibuya, promising fresh episodes airing every Sunday from April to July.
  • The new season will feature openings by Hitorie and endings by Yuiko Hara, enhancing the viewing experience of the popular anime series.
  • With the same voice cast staying on for Part 2, viewers can expect a seamless transition into new storylines surrounding Rudeus Greyrat’s journey.

Among a plethora of anime series returning in the Spring 2024 season, Studio Bind’s Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Part 2 is set to commence a new chapter in Rudeus’ journey on April 7. Following a measured change of pace between the epic action and adventures in the second cour of Season 1 and the more character-focused first cour of Season 2, this latest installment in the acclaimed adaptation of Rifujin no Magonote’s light novel series, is likely to comprise 12 episodes, airing until July.

One of the most prominent changes in the production for this cour comes in the director’s chair, where Ryosuke Shibuya has stepped in to take over the reins from Hiroki Hirano, who directed Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Part 1. Key visuals along with teaser trailers and character designs for the second cour have also been revealed over the last couple of months, along with the details of the opening and ending themes. New episodes will air at 00:00 JST, every Sunday on Tokyo MX, BS11, and other channels, followed by their distribution on the ABEMA/d Anime store as well as international premieres on affiliated streaming services.

Among the many unanswered questions in the anime, here are some of the most intriguing puzzles that the series has yet to piece together.

What’s New With The Production Of Season 2 Part 2?

As the third director to helm production of the series, Ryosuke Shibuya has big shoes to fill, following in the footsteps of Manabu Okamoto who directed the isekai fantasy adventure-themed Season 1, and Hiroki Hirano’s more subdued tone for Season 2 Part 1. Shibuya previously worked as a storyboard artist on two episodes from Part 1, and even directed Season 2 Episode 7, which was titled “The Kidnapping and Confinement of Beast Girls.” He has also served as a director for “The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World,” which adapted Kiichi Kosuzu’s light novel series of the same name over 13 episodes released in 2023.

The new opening for Season 2 Part 2 is titled “On The Frontline,” performed by the band Hitorie, which replaces LONGMAN’s “Spiral” from Season 2 Part 1. In the past, Hitorie has worked on openings for the mecha series 86 and Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Additionally, the new ending theme will be “Mamoritai Mono” by Yuiko Hara, who was also responsible for all the openings and endings in Season 1, along with two of the three endings from Season 2 Part 1, including “Clover” for Episode 0, and “Musubime,” which was used in episodes 2-11, alongside Ai Kayano’s performance of “Hanasaki mi” as Sylphiette that closed out Episode 12.

The Voice Acting Talent Behind The Second Cour

Close

As of now, the cast for Season 2 Part 2 remains unchanged from Part 1, with Yumi Uchiyama set to return as the main voice of Rudeus Greyrat and Sugita Tomokazu providing his internal monologue and narration. Ai Kayano will also reprise her role as Sylphiette/ Fitz, alongside Reina Ueda as Ariel Anemoi Asura, Kazuyuki Okitsu as Luke Notos Greyrat, and Rie Tanaka as Elinalise Dragonroad. Currently, the release date for the series’ English dub has not yet been revealed, although it is likely that most of the original cast will return, including Madeleine Morris and Ben Phillips as the main voice and internal monologue of Rudeus Greyrat, along with Emily Neves as Sylphiette/ Fitz, Sarah Wiedenheft as Ariel Anemoi Asura, and Aaron Campbell as Luke Notos Greyrat.

This consistency in the cast is interesting since the voice of Rudeus, the series’ protagonist, has stayed relatively similar throughout the anime’s run so far. Furthermore, the new character designs for this cour have also shown very limited changes in his appearance, which is a bit of a change from the illustrations in the light novels, where subtle alterations in Rudeus’ design in each volume, convey how he physically matures over the course of the story. This is in stark contrast to the characters of Aisha and Norn Greyrat, Rudeus’ younger sisters, who have both visibly aged in their new designs for Season 2 Part 2. That being said, the voice actor behind Rudeus’ external voice, Yumi Uchiyama, has done an incredible job of portraying the character’s nuanced persona and many quirks, and a shift in this department may not come too easily considering how positively her efforts have been received.

What Will Season 2 Part 2 Cover?

Close

Observing the pace at which the Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation anime has been adapting the content of the light novels, it may stand to reason that Season 2 Part 2 could potentially cover the next two to three volumes. Season 2 Part 1 adapted the seventh, eighth, and ninth volumes of the light novel, bringing the Mid-Level Adventurer Arc, the University Arc – Part 1, and the University Arc – Part 2 to life on screen. In the anime, this content was broken down into 13 episodes (including Episode 0, titled “Guardian Fitz,” which adapted extra chapters from the third and fourth volumes of the light novel).

Mushoku Tensei: Every Death In The Anime (So Far)

There are a number of named characters who have met their end in the anime adaptation of Mushoku Tensei so far.

Episodes 1-3 of Season 2 covered the contents of Volume 7, while the rest of the cour was devoted to Parts 1 and 2 of the University Arc, completing its narrative over nine episodes. If this pacing is anything to go by, Season 2 Part 2 could potentially adapt Volumes 10, 11, and 12, but it remains to be seen whether this will be the case since these volumes contain slightly more chapters than the ones covered in Part 1. This essentially means that Season 2 Part 1 will commence with the Newlyweds Arc, followed by the Sisters Arc, which will lead into the exciting Labyrinth Arc, that could provide a gripping finale for the second cour.

Whereas Season 2 Part 1 ended with the long-awaited reunion between Rudeus and Sylphiette after they were separated during the Teleport Incident, Part 2 will likely see the pair plan their wedding and future married life together, as alluded to in Episode 12. Continuing the more idyllic, peaceful mood of the University Arc after the more action-oriented arcs preceding it, the Newlyweds Arc will give more time to Rudeus’ and Sylphiette’s relationship as the pair enters a new phase of their lives together.

As evidenced by the key visuals released for the Sisters Arc of Part 2, this cour will also see the return of Norn and Aisha, who have been depicted with their updated designs. Subsequently, the Labyrinth Arc will probably be a huge change in tone with a more adventure-themed setting, although this lines up perfectly as an action-packed climax for Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2 Part 2.
