Paengi Chigi Tips and Tricks
In Squid Game season 2, episode 4, “Six Legs,” players compete in a six-legged pentathlon. Each team member must complete one of five minigames to progress through the race. If the team can complete the games and cross the finish line within five minutes, they may continue to the next round of the Squid Game. However, if the team fails in their mission, guards will ‘remove’ them from the competition.
Of all the Korean children’s games featured in the pentathlon, Paengi Chigi is the most deceptive. This winter pastime involves spinning a top via a twine string, often onto a smooth, icy surface. However, mastering the Paengi Chigi spin takes quick reflexes and attention to detail. With the proper grip, whip-fast speed, and focused aim, one can master this tricky feat with practice.

Paengi Chigi Rules
While each game of Paengi Chigi follows different win conditions, the basic rules are the same. Each player will have a wooden top, a twine string, and, in some cases, a rod. Play occurs in this order.
- The player wraps their twine string along the axle and base of the top.
- The player flicks their wrist to unwind the string, propelling the top into motion.
- Players sometimes may use a wooden rod to push their top and continue its motion.

Paengi Chigi looks easy at first glance. However, after watching Seon-nyeo and In-ho’s blunders in season 2, episode 5, “One More Game,” it’s clear that getting the top to spin is more complicated than it looks. Here are some tips for getting that picture-perfect spin.
- Tightly Wind the First Three Loops From the Top Axle: One mistake rookies make while playing Paengi Chigi is starting their loops from the base of the top instead of the axle. For example, Seon-nyeo made this error in her first wind-up attempt, causing her binding to fall apart into a mess. The best way to prevent this premature unwinding is by wrapping the axle (the handle) of the top and then tightly wrapping the first three loops around the base.
- Hold the End of the String Between Your Pinky and Ring Fingers: You’ll need plenty of hand mobility to give your top a substantial spin. Therefore, it is more advantageous to wedge the string in the gap between your pinky and ring fingers. This grip will allow the top to quickly unfurl once you open the palm of your hand. Holding the string with the tips of your index finger and thumb will prevent you from opening your palm, which may obstruct the top.
- Quickly Snap Your Wrist for a Faster Rotation: Speed is imperative to keeping your top in motion. (Anyone who has played with BeyBlades is familiar with this concept.) Therefore, quickly flick your wrist when unfurling your top and promptly pull back. The movement is similar to the wrist motion one makes when playing with a yo-yo.
