One Piece has been a manga since 1997, and as of today has ninety-eight volumes. Additionally, the anime series, which started in 1999, is almost at a thousand episodes – a triumph for any anime. While One Piece has never hit the heights of other franchises such as Dragon Ball Z in the West, it has been gaining traction slowly over the past several years.
However, many games based on the One Piecefranchise were never localized in North America, since its fanbase was so nice. Furthermore, the games the West did get have generally been only okay. That said, which among them are worth playing?
Updated August 23, 2023 by Mark Sammut:Despite being one of the most successful shonen manga of all time, One Piece has lagged behind in the video game department when compared to Dragon Ball or Naruto. Just to be clear, Eiichiro Oda’s manga has inspired a few dozen games, but they rarely seem to receive all that much attention; more importantly, a title has yet to materialize that fully delivers on the IP’s potential. One Piece does not have a Dragon Ball FighterZ or a Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 Full Burst. Still, there are some good adaptations, and the best One Piece games are definitely recommendable to fans.

One Piece hasn’t had the best luck on hand-held consoles, and 2012’s Romance Dawn didn’t do much to change that. Aside from the box art, there’s nothing all that notable about this title. Given the series’ track record with games, it still stands as one of the better-received.
The game puts the player in control of Luffy and various members of the Straw Hat crew. Seeing as it only goes up to Marineford, Romance Dawn is a pretty limited title narratively. The turn-based combat is at least serviceable, and fans can easily sink 50 hours or more into it.
15 One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP

The Unlimited Cruise games were initially split into two separate episodes but released as one game under the name Unlimited Cruise SP in 2011. The game is fairly straightforward, giving players the ability to play as the Star Hats in a standard story mode.
The game is notable for switching things up aesthetically, giving each crew member a different animal-based outfit. The pool of playable characters is similar to Unlimited Adventure’s, with the addition of Brook rounding out the Straw Hat crew.

Admittedly, this game isn’t all that good. Its score of 49 refers to the GameCube version, which is the higher score between it and the PS2. It’s tied with One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP 2 on 3DS with a 49 as well.
All players really need to know about this 2006 release is that it is a copy of a Mario Party-like mini-game collection. Overall, it just wasn’t well thought out.
13 One Piece: Pirate Warriors

What would be the first of many entries in the series, One Piece: Pirate Warriors lacked the polish or consistency of later titles. It did serve as a good starting point for a series that would become a staple for all One Piece game fans.
The game featured 13 playable characters, with gamers taking control of Luffy throughout the main story mode. The “Another Log” mode allowed players to choose a character and go through their individual stories, serving as a nice treat for hardcore fans.

Arguably one of the most disappointing One Piece games, World Seeker had the potential to be something special, at least for the IP. An open-world game set on a new island and featuring a fresh story, World Seeker aimed considerably higher than most of the license’s releases, which made its fall all that louder. As Luffy, players get to explore the reasonably large and beautiful Jail Island, which is under the control of a Marine named Isaac. Story-wise, World Seeker generally hits the mark, even if it primarily explores themes that were already touched upon by the source material. Still, the plot would not seem out of place as an arc in the manga or anime.
World Seeker falls short in the gameplay department, particularly in combat. Firstly, the fact only Luffy is playable is disappointing, although this decision can be somewhat forgiven due to exploration heavily utilizing the Straw Hat’s Devil Fruit abilities. Nevertheless, the DLC made three other characters playable, so it would not have been impossible to make some or all the Straw Hats viable options. While fine for exploration, Luffy can be clunky to control during battles, and his mechanics are also not deep enough to carry a campaign that should keep someone busy for roughly 15 hours.
11 One Piece: Burning Blood

This score is based on the PS4 version, but the PS Vita and Xbox One versions are pretty close. It’s a fighting game similar to other anime-based titles, such as the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series.
The big difference between the two is the budget. Overall, it doesn’t seem that this game tried as hard. Released in 2016, Burning Blood didn’t make much of a splash even for One Piece fans.
10 One Piece: Unlimited Adventure

This was a Wii exclusive that was released in 2008. It takes place on an island where Luffy and his crew are exploring the area for treasure. Players can swap out characters via a radial menu.
In terms of gameplay, One Piece: Limited Adventure is another hack and slash adventure. It also borrows elements from Metroidvania-style games, as certain areas are locked until the right action can be taken.
9 One Piece: Grand Battle

This score is based on the PS2 version, but the GameCube version is very close with a 67 overall. One Piece: Grand Battle is a fighting game with a simplistic combat system and a cutesy art style in the form of chibi.
The fourth and last game in its series, it also has the unique distinction of being the only one to have come out in North America. It was released for both systems in 2005.

This score is based on the GameCube version, with the PS2 version trailing somewhat close behind. It is similar to One Piece: Grand Battle in both combat style and art.
Grand Adventure is also a sequel to Grand Battle, even though this title apparently belongs to its own separate series from the aforementioned Japanese quadrilogy. However one categorizes it, this 2006 fighter is pretty simple, but its decent roster contributes to its higher score.

The Pirate Warriors games certainly got better as they went along. Omega Force always put a good deal of love and care into the titles, and gave fans something of a change of pace with the second title.
Instead of going with the usual retelling of the One Piece storyline, Pirate Warriors 2 gave fans a completely game-exclusive original narrative. It featured the Straw Hat crew two years after entering the New World and boasted a much larger roster of characters, with 27 playable.

The latest installment in the Pirate Warriors series, Pirate Warriors 4 was received as well as its predecessor by both fans and critics. As with previous entries, Omega Force got creative with the cannon narrative, opting to add their own twist on the ever-popular ongoing Wano arc.
The roster of playable characters is even bigger this time around, coming in at 43 included in the base game. DLC added in another 9, bringing the total up to 52. It might not be a perfect game, but Pirate Warriors 4 will satisfy just about any One Piece fan.
5 One Piece: Unlimited World Red

This score is based on the original release, which hit the 3DS in the West in 2014. Since that time, One Piece: Unlimited World Red has also been ported to the PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, and Switch all with similar scores in the 70s and high 60s.
This game is another action-adventure brawler starring Luffy, although modern versions of it have a cool twist. Players now have the option of co-op, which can help make any game better even if it isn’t exactly a masterpiece.
4 One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3

This score is based on both the Switch and PS Vita versions, whose Metacritic scores are tied. This list could be dominated by all four games in this spinoff series to Dynasty Warriors, which started in 2012. Most of these games rank highly, or at least within this range. However, to better diversify the list (and because all of them are very similar), let’s just look at one.
What this game in particular gets right is the character options, diversity in combat, and attention to detail. One Piece: Pirate Wariors also pays homage to the original material nicely. It can be repetitive and mindless at times, but a co-op buddy can help break the tedium.
3 One Piece GBA

This game is just called One Piece, but fans often refer to it as One Piece GBA since that was the system it was released on in 2005. Dimps, the developing team behind this game, made some of the best-looking Game Boy Advance games on their own, or in collaboration with others. These include Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure, and the Sonic Advance games.
One Piece is no exception to Dimps’ impressive track record. The pixel art in this game looks great, and it’s a fun action-platformer to boot.
2 One Piece Odyssey

The most recent One Piece games, Odyssey is a turn-based JRPG that frames some of the manga’s most prominent arcs through a new storyline. The Straw Hats wind up on a mystery island that strips them of most of their abilities, forcing the crew to revisit their most challenging memories to regain their skills. While largely retreading familiar ground, Odyssey does change a few things about the sagas, so they should present a handful of surprises for long-time fans.
One Piece Odyssey is arguably the franchise’s most ambitious game to date, and it comes the closest to capturing the source material’s sense of adventure. The turn-based combat works fairly well since it emphasizes the crew’s positioning on the battlefield, encouraging players to move them around to ensure they are targeting the right enemies for them. That said, outside of boss encounters, the campaign is a bit too easy for its own good, which winds up taking away from what is fundamentally a solid battle system.
On paper, One Piece Odyssey is the most accessible game in the franchise, but it is still ultimately difficult to recommend to JRPG fans who are not interested in the manga or anime. The story is not only long but moves at a fairly slow pace, which can cause boredom to set in after a while.

Believe it or not, the best-rated One Piece game on Metacritic is a free-to-play mobile game. It was released in 2015 and is still going strong, which is incredible considering how often these things can just tank.
One Piece Treasure Cruise is another RPG gacha system that most players could easily ignore, but it deserves some credit. More than anything, the game does seem to adore its fans and honors the material on which it is based.
