Summary
- Sony confirms Horizon Zero Dawn film adaptation is in development with Colombia Pictures.
- A series adaptation was previously in development at work and is now considered dead.
- PlayStation Productions Head hints at a “vibrant” world and story.
Horizon Zero Dawn is one of PlayStation’s most popular and inventive first-party games. It’s also one of the most cinematic, making a screen adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn inevitable. After a false start, Sony has confirmed that an adaptation of the major video game title is once again in development.
Horizon Zero Dawn is an original concept from Guerrilla Games that was first released in 2017. It is set on Earth in the far future, following the survivors of an apocalypse who live in a world overrun by animalistic machines. Aloy (Ashly Burch) is the main character of the series, a young woman and outcast hunter who goes on a journey to save the clans and learns about her past along the way. Horizon Zero Dawn earned a sequel in 2022 titled Horizon Forbidden West and has also spawned a universe that includes a LEGO game and a VR game, Horizon: Call of the Mountain.

Sony Resurrects Horizon Zero Dawn Adaptation
Close
At Sony’s press conference at CES this week, the studio announced a raft of adaptations in the works based on its major properties (including a Helldivers 2 movie and a Ghost of Tsushima anime). Horizon Zero Dawn was also on the list, with PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash confirming that a film adaptation is currently in development in collaboration with Colombia Pictures. “Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are at the early stages of developing a film adaptation of the award-winning Horizon Zero Dawn… Just imagine, Aloy’s beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far future world filled with the giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen,” Qizilbash said (as reported by IGN). The film is still in early development so no filmmakers or cast were announced.

A Horizon Zero Dawn Adaptation Was Previously In Development At Netflix
This news is particularly exciting after PlayStation’s first attempt at a Horizon Zero Dawn adaptation was considered DOA. The game was once set for a series adaptation on Netflix, with The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman attached to write the show. After years of development that series never transpired and this latest news seems to officially mark the Netflix series as dead.

Their dominion over the new wilderness has been usurped by the Machines – fearsome mechanical creatures of unknown origin.
