Vijayakanth, popularly known as Captain, was an actor, producer, director, and politician. He started a career in acting, and later he stepped into politics. He made his debut in the Inkkum Ilamai movie (1979) and rose to fame for his Sattam Oru Iruttarai movie (1981). He then acted in more than 150 movies.
Later, he took a break from his acting career and started a Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) political party to serve the people. In the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, he became the opposition leader from 2011 to 2016. Vijayakanth also became a Member of the Legislative Assembly twice in the Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam constituencies.
In 2022, he was affected by the coronavirus and admitted to the hospital for further treatment. While he was in treatment, his condition became worse; in addition to the pneumonia disease, he contracted COVID-19, and he passed away on 28 December 2023 in Miot Hospital, Chennai.
Personal Life
Vijayakanth was known as Narayanan Vijayaraj Alagarswami. He was born in Madurai on August 25, 1952, to N Alagarswami and Aandal Azhagarswami. On 31 January 1990, he married Premalatha, and the couple had two sons: Vijay Prabhakar Alagarswami, who chose a political career like his father, and Shanmuga Pandian, who is an actor who appeared in movies like Madura Veeran and Sagaptham.
Political Career
He formed the regional political party named Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) on 14 September 2005 in his homeland, Madurai. He proved to be an important leader in the Tamil Nadu assembly election by getting 10.1% in the Lok Sabha election. In the local body election, DMDK was able to get a substantial number of votes. Later, he formed an alliance with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the 2011 election.
In that election, his party acquired huge success by winning 29 seats out of 45 seats. Then, DMDK allied with the BJP in the 2014 parliament election. But it became the backdrop of his political career, and he lost his position as the Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu due to several failures. After the loss in 2016, he retired from politics due to health problems, and his wife, Premalatha Vijayakanth, took control of the party. On 14 December 2023, Vijayakanth appointed Premalatha as the General Secretary of the DMDK party.
