In all modern anime, few can claim to have characters as likable and iconic as those in Jujutsu Kaisen. The main characters in this show are also incredibly powerful, having access to Cursed Techniques that give them abilities far beyond the scope of the regular human, and this strength is either warranted by harsh training, being born with an amazing technique, or, sometimes, both!

One such example of the former is the series’ protagonist, Yuji Itadori. Though he was introduced as someone who was physically gifted, he underwent a ton of training throughout Jujutsu Kaisen, which slowly helped him hone his Cursed Energy. This has eventually led to him becoming one of the strongest characters in the series, despite starting as someone whose powers left many fans disappointed!

Enter: Yuji Itadori

Introduced in the very first episode of the series, Yuji was quite an anomaly in the sense that his defining feature was his incredible physical prowess. Though he initially shrugged it off, he got to know the true nature of his gifts after he teamed up with Megumi when his school building got attacked by a Cursed Spirit housing a powerful Cursed Object. Since they struggled to take down the spirit, he ingested the Cursed Object to gain a power-up.

Little did he know that this Cursed Object was a finger of Ryomen Sukuna, the malicious King of Curses and the strongest Jujutsu user in history. This is the premise for the series, where Sukuna resides within Yuji’s body, which itself slowly soaks up Sukuna’s Cursed Energy and makes Yuji more powerful as he gets recruited into Jujutsu High and is trained as a sorcerer to help the world deal with Cursed Spirits.

Yuji’s Early Challenges

When the series started, it showed fans many unique and powerful abilities, the likes of which cannot be seen in any other anime or manga. Despite this, Yuji’s Cursed Technique remained very basic. For the initial parts of his journey, Yuji could not manipulate his Cursed Energy beyond just reinforcing his attacks with it, which made him a formidable combatant but far away from the strongest characters in the series.

With the help of Gojo and his peers, he would undergo training to get even more powerful, the results of which were shown on his first-ever mission where he teamed up with Nobara to destroy a Cursed Spirit in an abandoned building. Despite being fairly powerful, the limitations of this technique were shown in his next mission when he and the other first years would face off against a Special Grade Cursed Spirit called the Finger Bearer. His technique fell short due to it only allowing him to punch and kick his opponent.

Sukuna would eventually take over and defeat the Finger Bearer, but would kill Yuji by ripping out his heart and holding his body hostage. However, Yuji was able to come back from this as well through a Binding Vow, working in secret with Kento Nanami to find and defeat the Special Grade Cursed Spirit, Mahito. After seeing much death and destruction caused by the Cursed Spirit, Yuji also lost his friend Junpei to the curse.

After finally confronting Mahito in a final battle, Yuji realizes the essence of his Cursed Technique, Divergent Fist. Not only did this technique reinforce Yuji’s punches with Cursed Energy, it also added an extra hit that did more damage, using it masterfully with Nanami’s help. However, had it not been for them both fighting together, they would have lost against Mahito, showing that Yuji still needed to improve his Cursed Technique further.

Yuji Keeps Improving

Yuji would eventually make his return to Jujutsu High, surprising his classmates and superiors alike, since Gojo kept his resurrection a secret. In the friendly competition between the 2 schools, Yuji showed great improvement as he held back Aoi Todo, the strongest sorcerer in the entire Kyoto Jujutsu school. However, the event was disrupted by the appearance of Hanami, another Special Grade Cursed Spirit.

Despite being far more powerful than the students, Todo and Yuji joined forces to bring the monster down by not only improving their teamwork but also utilizing their Cursed Techniques perfectly. Yuji’s control over his Divergent Fist and Cursed Energy improved so drastically that he performed a Black Flash 4 times in a row against Hanami, and he would only improve in the next arc, where he and Nobara took down the Death Paintings.

I can’t be the only one going back when those two are out there fighting.

The Shibuya Incident saw Itadori take down many transfigured humans and weaker Cursed Spirits, as his control over his technique had improved to such an extent that he could very easily defeat weaker characters. However, his limits were reached in his fight against Choso, another Death Painting who was far stronger than him, as he could use the Kamo Clan’s infamous Blood Manipulation to its greatest degree. After being defeated by Choso, Itadori’s unconscious body was fed many Sukuna Fingers at once, prompting the King of Curses to spawn and wreak havoc across Shibuya.

This was something that greatly traumatized Yuji when he eventually came to and was further exacerbated when he saw Nanami and Nobara die against Mahito. Though he was at his lowest point ever and was being beaten by the curse, Todo saved him, bringing him to his senses and eventually going on to defeat Mahito. Yuji finally reached the apex of his potential and became strong enough to defeat the strongest Disaster Curse of them all.

Yuji Becomes One Of The Strongest Sorcerers

Kenjaku’s true plan was revealed at the end of the Shibuya Incident Arc when the Culling Game officially began. In this game, 1000 sorcerers were thrown into locations all across Japan where they had to fight it out to earn points. Since this game comprised of some of the most powerful Jujutsu users of all time, Yuji had to be at his maximum power in order to fight them well.

In many of the fights that he had in this arc, he was pushed quite far but proved himself to be so adept with his abilities that he came out the victor. However, halfway through the arc, Sukuna evoked his Binding Vow with Yuji that let him take over his body and feed a Sukuna Finger to Megumi, transferring his essence to the Ten Shadows sorcerer. A deadly fight ensued, where Yuji and Maki fought against the King of Curses and even Sukuna commented on how impressive Yuji’s strength was.

Sukuna won the battle and made his way to an undisclosed location to prepare himself for his eventual fight against Gojo. The heroes would eventually free Gojo from the Prison Realm and the battle of the strongest commenced where, after a long and grueling contest, the King of Curses would come out the winner, but only by a margin.

The arc after this, the Shinjuku Showdown, is where the story is at the time of writing. Many fighters had taken the challenge to defeat Sukuna but most of them had failed in the face of the curse’s overwhelming power. However, Yuji remains an exception. Despite Sukuna thinking very little of him, Yuji is the only person who keeps coming back to fight the King of Curses and the one character he hasn’t been able to take out of the fight.

This is because, over the course of the series, Yuji has realized his full potential. Now, he seems to have gained a unique Cursed Technique that allows him to weaken the soul of his enemy, along with the ability to use Blood Manipulation, albeit to a far more limited capacity than what Choso can do. Moreover, his brand-new ‘Demon Arms’ remain a mystery, though the common fan theory states that Yuji ingested the remaining Death Paintings.

All of this makes him an incredibly powerful sorcerer, but now it seems that he can even use Black Flash with much more ease compared to most other characters. Coupling this with the fact that he learned how to use Reverse Cursed Technique within a single month goes to show that Yuji is a prodigy on the same level as Gojo and Yuta, and has since proven himself to be the perfect main character of Jujutsu Kaisen!
