One of the strongest Lieutenants in Bleach, Renji Abarai easily stands out from among the Shinigami of his rank in the Gotei 13 owing to his strength, determination, fierceness, and above all, his loyalty to his friends. Having played a central role in the Soul Society Arc, which saw him go up against both Ichigo Kurosaki and his 6th Division Captain Byakuya Kuchiki, he was also a major figure in the conflicts in both Hueco Mundo and Fake Karakura Town, where the battle against Aizen finally progressed to a climactic conclusion.

Throughout the course of the story, Renji faces off against several powerful opponents, each playing a vital part in his development as both a Shinigami and an individual. With each defeat, he resolved to get stronger, and with each victory, he cemented the growth in his strength which reached unforeseen levels by the conclusion of the Quincy Blood War in Bleach. Looking into the foes he has confronted, several battles stand out from the rest, as showcases of Renji’s true mettle as an elite-level Shinigami.

7 Renji Abarai Vs Jackie Tristan

Renji Vs Jackie Tristan Bleach

On the face of it, this fight might have illustrated more about Renji’s moral code than anything else, but it is still a memorable moment of its own accord. As the Fullbringer and Xcution member Jackie Tristan attempts to land attack after attack on him, Renji calmly states that he refuses to raise his hand against women, and calmly blocks or evades each of her strikes.

Eventually, Jackie goes all out to try and defeat him. Renji casually blocks once again and subdues her by knocking her out with the hilt of his Zanpakuto. The two are unable to leave the chat room created by Yukio as both are still alive. On seeing Renji’s refusal to kill her, Jackie tries to sacrifice herself and succeeds in escaping.

6 Renji Abarai Vs Yylfordt Granz

Renji Vs Yylfordt Bleach

Initially struggling even with his Bankai, Renji struggled to hold his own against Arrancar #15 Yylfordt Granz, after traveling to the Human World to tackle the threat of the invading Arrancar sent by Aizen.

Due to his Spiritual Limiter, which decreased his power to 20%, Renji’s attacks were easily blocked by the Arrancar, until the intervention of Ururu Tsumugiya, an employee of the Urahara Shop gave him a few moments of respite. At this time, Renji was able to request that his limiter be removed, and after gaining access to his full strength, he easily dispatched Yylfordt with just one attack using his Bankai.

5 Renji Abarai And Byakuya Kuchiki Vs Gerard Valkyrie

Renji and Byakuya Vs Gerard Valkyrie Bleach

While this fight was not entirely Renji’s own, he, along with the rest of the Gotei 13, had a part to play in taking down Gerard Valkyrie until he was eventually killed by Yhwach. When initially confronted by Gerard, who is also the heart of the Soul King, Renji attempts to restrain Gerard with Zabimaru, binding him in place to leave him open to attack by the remaining combatants from the Gotei 13.

After Byakuya unleashed Senbonzakura and overpowers Gerard, the latter was soundly defeated by the combined assault from Renji and his captain, only to re-emerge once again with the power of “The Miracle,” stronger and larger than ever before. After a few more exchanges, which included both Byakuya and Hitsugaya alongside Renji, the emergence of Kenpachi Zaraki took the fight to a whole new dimension as the 11th Division Captain finally unleashed his Bankai.

4 Renji Abarai And Uryū Ishida Vs Szayelaporro Granz

Renji Uryu Szayelaporro Bleach

Definitely one of the longer fights, this confrontation took place during the mission to save Orihime from Aizen’s clutches in Las Noches. Throughout this assault on Aizen’s stronghold, Renji encountered the 8th Espada Szayelaporro Granz. The first exchanges saw Szayelaporro mocking Renji and refusing to fight him head-on, leaving him to his Fracciones until the arrival of Uryu. From then on, the pair attempted to find an opening to defeat him and successfully managed to trigger an explosion that trapped and nearly killed the Espada with Sprenger, if not for his ability to heal by consuming his Fracciones.

With this, Szayelaporro finally acknowledged his opponents and activated his Resurrecion. This leads to the duo having to fight copies of themselves due to the Espada’s unique “Carbon Copy” ability, eventually culminating in Renji activating his Bankai, an act which the copies emulated, destroying the hall they were fighting in. Now drawn outside, the two had to contend with Szayelaporro’s other ability, Teatro de Titere, which created dolls of his enemies that could deal actual damage when attacked. Uryu and Renji were both swiftly incapacitated by this move. With the situation growing more dire, Pesche and Dondochakka attempted to bring the fight to a close, but it was to no avail. Only the arrival of Mayuri Kurotsuchi, the 12th Division Captain, brought the conflict to a resolution, saving Uryu and Renji from certain death.

After being sucker punched by Mask de Masculine during the Wandenreich’s invasion of Soul Society, Renji proceeded to confront the Sternritter after he had defeated the 9th Division Captain Kensei Muguruma and 3rd Division Captain Rojuro Otoribashi. Now, armed with his true Bankai, Renji was confident in his ability to dispatch Mask. The arrogant Sternritter proceeded to brag about his strength and heroic ideals, launching attack after attack towards Renji who was able to absorb the damage without too much trouble.

Mask then activated his Quincy: Vollstandig and attacked Renji again, only to see him emerging from the smoke with his true Bankai, Souou Zabimaru. Within two quick moves, Renji grabbed Mask, threw him into a building, and then proceeded to impale and incinerate Mask to ashes, without giving the Sternritter so much as a moment to counter. In effect, this moment served to showcase the growth in Renji’s strength after gaining his true Bankai.

2 Renji Abarai Vs Ichigo Kurosaki: Rematch

Renji Vs Ichigo Rematch Bleach

Perhaps one of the most iconic fights in the series and a high point in the Soul Society Arc, this confrontation occurred when Ichigo attempted to infiltrate the Senzaikyu to save Rukia from her imprisonment and execution. On encountering Ichigo as he approached the steps of the Senzaikyu, Renji was shocked to see that he had survived Byakuya’s assault. The two clashed as Renji unleashed his Shikai and forced Ichigo backward. Renji proclaimed that Ichigo had no chance of beating him as he did not have any restraints on his power like he did in the Human World.

Throughout the fight, Renji continued to attack viciously, overpowering Ichigo with each blow. Having already sustained wounds from his fight against Ikkaku Madarame, Ichigo struggled to find openings in Renji’s fighting style, which harnessed the extension of Zabimaru’s Shikai to be used as a whip. On finding a point where he could attack as Zabimaru retracted, Ichigo was left stunned as Renji dodged with Shunpo and slashed him once again. Grievously injured, Ichigo finally found the resolve to kill and attacked Renji with a Getsuga Tensho which completely overwhelmed the Lieutenant. Now utterly defeated, Renji begged Ichigo to save Rukia. This moment was a turning point in the Soul Society Arc, where Ichigo and Renji became allies with a shared goal, and it also served to showcase Ichigo’s development after being outclassed by Renji in the Human World.

1 Renji Abarai Vs Byakuya Kuchiki

On completing his Bankai training to save Rukia, Renji departed for the Senzaikyu and cut down multiple Shinigami before facing off against his commanding officer, the 6th Division Captain Byakuya Kuchiki. Finally getting a chance to take on the man he sought to surpass, Renji countered Byakuya’s Senka and activated his Shikai without calling out his Zanpakuto’s name, much to Byakuya’s surprise. He then prevented Byakuya from releasing Senbonzakura and activated his Bankai, Hihio Zabimaru. As Renji appeared to be gaining the upper hand, the 6th Division Captain finally got serious and restrained him with Kido, before admonishing him for using his Bankai in battle without mastering it.

Byakuya then activated his own Bankai, Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, slashing Renji across his entire body. Now, on the brink of death, Renji hardened his resolve to defeat Byakuya and made one last charge toward him, only for his sword to shatter upon making contact with his Captain. As Renji collapsed, Byakuya praised his efforts and left him lying there. This battle showcased Renji’s development as a Shinigami as he was finally able to challenge Byakuya, but it also served to highlight the difference in power between the two, before setting up Byakuya’s climactic showdown with Ichigo. The buildup of Renji’s desire to surpass Byakuya, as well as the actual progression of the fight, sets it apart as another highlight moment in the Soul Society Arc, and easily the most memorable of Renji’s battles in Bleach.
