These hilarious recurring Bleach gags always manage to break up the tension of the main story.
Bleach‘s story can be very dark and serious when it needs to be, which makes sense considering it’s based in a world constantly hounded by Hollows. Despite that, the series has also been known for its witty humor that helps to break up some of the tension, and while some jokes are simply one-offs, others have stuck around for much longer, and gradually became recurring gags.

10 Bleach Games You Might Not Know Exist
The Bleach anime and manga franchise is fertile ground for great games, but not all titles are well-known by fans. Here are the more obscure ones.
Though there are quite a few ongoing gags that pop up throughout Bleach, thankfully, Tite Kubo has quite a creative and clever sense of humor which provides a nice breath of fresh air from the high stakes of the main plot. These are some of the most well-known and funniest jokes in Bleach that have appeared on several occasions throughout the extensive story of this classic shōnen anime.

Ikkaku’s Random Expressions
Tite Kubo Decided To Make Ikkaku His Own Personal Facial Expression Dummy
Ikakku wouldn’t exactly be considered an important character in Bleach‘s story since he’s only a lieutenant, but for some reason, Kubo loves to use this guy as his personal facial expression dummy. Every now and again, Ikkaku will come out with a face that looks like it’s been ripped out of an entirely different manga. This is a similar comical technique used by Satoru Noda, the author of Golden Kamuy, who would draw a vast range of different facial expressions for Asirpa, which often take inspiration from other genres and specific artistic styles.
Kubo has done just the same and decided to use it on Ikkaku, which makes a lot of sense since he does find himself in some pretty bizarre scenarios. Ikkaku’s limited screentime in the Thousand Year Blood War means this joke wasn’t as prevalent later on in the story, but during the first few arcs, there was never any predicting what sort of face he would make when the inevitable close-up camera shot would happen.

Orihime’s Eating Habits
There’s No Such Thing As Too Much Bread For Orihime
Anime characters who love eating are nothing out of the ordinary. Luffy and Goku for example can always be found stuffing their faces when they’ve got a bit of downtime, and Orihime would also have to be a member of that club. Though she’s always talking about food with her friends, it’s during the scenes that take place in school that viewers can see for themselves just how much Orihime eats. If she hasn’t brought an enormous block of bread to snack on, then she’ll have an entire bag of doughnuts to keep her going throughout the day.

Bleach: 8 Best Arcs In The Anime
Bleach has many memorable story arcs through the series, and many are considered some of the best in shonen history, but which are the best overall?
Considering Orihime dreams of one day working in a bakery, it makes sense that she would be obsessed with food growing up, but if she can be seen eating entire cubes of bread in one go, one can’t help but imagine what the rest of her diet looks like. This is actually one of the longest-running jokes in Bleach, and it’s a small but subtle detail that adds so much charm to Orihime’s character.

Rangiku’s Relationship With Hitsugaya
Rangiku And Hitsugaya Are The Most Random Pairing In The Soul Society
There are some truly bizarre captain and lieutenant combos within the Soul Society, but the strangest and most hilarious duo of them all would have to be Hitsugaya and Rangiku. These two couldn’t be any more different from one another. While the former is a child prodigy who possesses one of the strongest Bankai in existence and is destined for greatness, the other is a fun-loving and bubbly woman who loves nothing more than drinking the days away at the nearest bar.
Though they trust each other and are capable of being a formidable team in combat, their contrasting personalities do mean the two have had their fair share of squabbling matches throughout the story. The majority of the time, this involves Rangiku trying to get Hitsugaya to partake in a fun activity, seeing how far she can push his buttons before he finally snaps. This recurring gag allows fans to get a good idea of who Rangiku is as a person, while also showing a slightly goofier side of Hitsugaya.

Isshin’s Loving Affection For Ichigo
Isshin Will Do Anything To Get On Ichigo’s Last Nerve
In his later years as a Soul Reaper, Isshin became a cold, stoic, and deadly serious warrior who’s always focused on the mission at hand, but in the world of the living, he’s an entirely different person. It would be an understatement to say Isshin can be a pretty awful dad to Ichigo at times. When he’s not dive-kicking his son out of bed, he can be found desperately trying to pry into his personal life, or forcing him into a fearsome arm wrestle. Needless to say, Isshin is pretty over the top, but his wild antics do at least add a lot of fun and energy to the family.

A lot of fans have presumed that Isshin acts this way to try and raise the spirits of his children after the tragic passing of their mother since he only seems to be this eccentric when around his family. Others have suggested it might just be a clever way to avoid any suspicion of him being a Soul Reaper. Either way, it’s always hilarious watching Isshin get up to his usual crazy behavior in an attempt to appeal to his son, especially when Yuzu and Karin also join in.

Kisuke Disguising Himself As A Shopkeeper
No Matter How Outlandish Things Get, Kisuke Is Always Just The “Humble Shopkeeper”
Kisuke Urahara is one of the smartest people in all of Bleach, having once been a top scientist in the Soul Society before he was kicked out for conducting immoral experiments on prisoners. To avoid any unwanted attention, Kisuke decided to become a shopkeeper in the world of the living alongside a ragtag group of friends he made along the way. In truth, Kisuke offers G-Guys at his shop, which allows Soul Reapers to keep their bodies occupied while they go about their duties.
As the series goes on, Kisuke continuously claims he’s nothing more than a humble shopkeeper, even to the people who know that this is a lie. At first, he only says this to Ichigo and his friends, but he even goes as far as to say it to Aizen, who at that point, had gained superhuman powers thanks to the Hogyoku. Seeing Kisuke try to keep this facade up for so long is a subtle gag that always manages to break up the tension of a scene with how absurd it is.

Unohana’s Unnerving Presence
Unohana’s Unnerving Stare Foreshadows Her True Identity
Early in the story of Bleach, Unohana is presented as being a gentle and sweet captain who simply cares about keeping her allies safe and doing everything she can to teach the next generation how to become medics of their own. Because of how much more passive Unohana was compared to the other captains, Kubo would often make a joke out of this by including scenes where she would strike fear into anyone who managed to get on her nerves with nothing but a creepy smile.
This happened quite a few times, such as during the Soul Society arc when she scared away a group of Squad 11 rookies who started making too many demands. This is an incredibly clever gag though, as while it’s hilarious to watch at first, it also foreshadows Unohana’s true identity as a merciless killer later on, where suddenly, it makes sense why everyone would be so petrified of a simple smile.

Rukia’s Drawings
Maybe It’s For The Best That Rukia Didn’t Decide To Become An Artist After All
The world of Bleach can be a little confusing to understand at first. On the one hand, there’s the world of the living where regular humans live, but some of these humans can detect Soul Reapers and Hollows, which are essentially the spirits of those who have died. This isn’t even mentioning the Soul Society, Arrancar, and everything else that fills up the wider world. Thankfully, one character who’s very knowledgeable about most of these things is Rukia, and though she finds it easier to explain things through drawing, she’s not exactly the best artist.
Most of the time, Rukia’s drawings end up being too messy to understand with all the action effects and wacky characters spread out across the page, but no matter how bad they can get, she always seems to be overjoyed with the final result. These drawings do at least provide a general idea of the situation Ichigo and the gang find themselves in, but they also indicate that maybe it was for the better that Rukia never decided to join an art school.
