In Dandadan’s world where both aliens and spirits exist, a lot of foreign entities are introduced every now and then. Entities like Nessie, both bat and monster have proven these. However, among the many foreign entities, some spark more questions and intrigue than others, and such an object is the Nanoskin. The Nanoskin was given to the Ayases by an alien to repair the damage to their house after extensive damage had been done to it.
However, as a foreign object that was used to rebuild a house, the Nanoskin has proven to be a lot more than just a quick repair for the Ayase residence in Dandadan. How it functions, its effects, and the role it plays in combat have proven to be of interest to many fans and characters alike.

The Origin Of The Nanoskin
A Material For Imaginative Minds
Jiji’s situation with the evil eye led to him trying to control it. However, back at the Ayase Residence, he had issues doing just that and ended up destroying the house whenever he transformed. Enter Okarun and Jiji, who lost control of the evil eye, and the Ayase Residence was reduced to rubble. Thankfully, while considering how to rebuild the house, their friend, Mr. Mantis Shrimp, appears along with his alien friend Ludris, a construction specialist, to help repair their house using Nanoskins. But like anything with the supernatural, the Ayases, Jiji, and Okarun had no idea what they were dealing with.
The Nanoskin is made up of ultrahigh-density nanomachines that conform to the holder’s imagination. This material is made up of a shape-memory alloy that retains the shape to which it was conformed, so as long as its shape is not intentionally conformed, it will restore itself and return to its original shape. This is why it was suggested for the Ayase household which had already undergone a lot of damage, especially from Jiji’s Evil Eye.
To alter the structure of the Nanoskin, the wielder has to clearly visualize what they want while kneading the material. As the wielder clearly visualizes it, the nanomachines pick up the electrical signals in the brain and take the shape being visualized. Applying this method, Momo, Okarun, and their companions were able to rebuild their house. However, it does not deal with basic changes alone. The limit and functionality of the shape of the Nanoskin depend solely on the imagination of the user. Be it a house, a car, or a robot, as long as it can be imagined not just by appearance but also by function, it will definitely work, making it a deadly tool in the hands of the most imaginative of minds.
The Versatile Applications Of The Nanoskin
From Mecha Battles To Bizarre Transformations
Close
The Nanoskin used to rebuild the Ayase residence has experienced its fair share of innovations, some cute or just useful and some crazy enough to battle extraterrestrial forces on equal footing. One such version was the Great Kinta Bodhisattva. A giant Mecha based on Kinta’s wild imagination and love for anything Mecha. Unlike most Mecha in other anime that have multiple controls for the pilot to use, this Mecha is controlled by the same concept that was used to create it, visualization.
It also has three forms as there were moments they had to evolve and adapt to different situations, leading to several changes. After escaping the Kaiju and running to their house with no idea what to do, Okarun, Momo, and the others remembered the concept behind the Nanoskin and with desperation created the Giant Mecha Buddha, the first form. Disrupted by Momo’s visualization of something big, it had a lot of issues with not much function, which led to Kinta’s remodeling to the second form.
The second form is much more suited for battle, with mobile hands and feet that allow for mobility and proper attacks, unlike the first form. This form, piloted by Kinta, made excellent use of the Nanoskin as he was able to launch powerful attacks and briefly subdue the Kaiju, even creating an infrared scope with the Mecha’s sunglasses. The Kaiju later gained the upper hand against Kinta, nearly destroying his creation. This led to Momo and Aira using their supernatural abilities to take control of the Mecha, giving it its third form of Alienware mixed with supernatural powers which led to the subjugation of the Kaiju that brought about these developments.
Aside from the intriguing creation of the Great Kinta Bodhisattva, there have been other great uses of the Nanoskin. An instance is Mr. Mantis Shrimp remodeling the normal Ayase residence into a house on wheels as they tried to take an injured and temporarily immobile Okarun to the hospital without incurring further damage.
There are also others such as when Momo turned the house into a very large bicycle and into a model of a cat, making these conformations seem absurd. Aira also had her own contribution, transforming the house into an amalgamation of her romantic desires, arguably the most absurd transformation of the Nanoskin house yet.
The Future Of Nanoskin
Imagination Trumping Science And The Supernatural
With materials and abilities such as the Nanoskin and the Power Of Words that rely heavily, if not solely, on the imagination of their wielder, the Dandadan series hints at imagination being a key factor in trumping over the supernatural and alien forces that cause chaos. The Nanoskin in particular would most likely play a very vital role in the progression of the series, creating more applications with the most unique imaginations.
It might not even be the end of the Great Kinta Bodhisattva just yet as there is always room for improvement, especially with Kinta’s vast knowledge of Mechas. The fact that the main source of the Nanoskin has not been revealed could also be a major plot twist later in the series. It could lead to an all-out Nanoskin Technological war and Momo, Okarun, and friends might find themselves roped into it, as they have with most aliens and spirits right from the beginning.
