When he was young, Jin Enjoji lived in Kamigoe City with his parents. He attended the same school as Momo Ayase, and the two were good friends at the time. Unbeknownst to him, Momo had a crush on Enjoji, but she never gathered the courage to tell him. Just like his teenage days, Jin used to be a carefree child and appeared to have quite a few friends. His amicable nature helped him get along with his peers and made him a universally liked figure among his classmates.
Jiji’s life was quite ordinary as long as he lived in Kamigoe City. However, his friendship with Momo seems to have gone through a dramatic decline at some point in grade school. When Ayase’s grandmother pushed her to religiously perform rituals publicly, her peers took notice. Momo was ridiculed, and Jiji joined in with his friends to mock her. The incident hurt Ayase, who had feelings for him. Soon after these events, Jin’s family decided to move up to the mountains, and the two lost touch with each other.

After leaving Kamigoe City, Jin Enjoji and his family moved up to the mountains in pursuit of a better life. Since Jiji had always had a special place in his heart for a place close to nature, he was thrilled to be able to live his dream life. The house that the Enjoji family rented was big and clean. As a kid, Jin was naturally delighted and eager to explore his surroundings. The serene environment and fresh mountain air filled Jin with a new zest for life. Unfortunately, his initial excitement did not last long, as he started noticing that something was off about his new home.
Back in grade school, I made fun of you Momo. Looking back now, I seriously regret it.
Jiji felt that the bathroom, toilet, and the things around the house were somehow different than usual. His skepticism only grew with time, but he struggled to put it into words. That changed one day when he was confronted by a spirit that had been living in that home for a long time. Jiji was understandably terrified. But it got worse as the spirit followed him everywhere, including his dreams. Sleep-deprived and completely out of his wits, Jin attempted to make his parents understand the evil influence in the house but his concerns fell on deaf ears.
As his parents never took his warnings seriously, Jin probably felt alone. He tried his best to ignore the spirit, but things took a dark turn when his parents’ health suddenly deteriorated. It was high time that something was done, so Jin decided to seek the help of famous spirit mediums. Exorcisms were organized, but nothing appeared to have any effect on the sinister forces lingering in the house.

To make matters worse, three of the five spirit mediums who had tried to exorcise the spirit ended up committing suicide in bizarre circumstances. With no other hope in sight, Jiji was recommended by other spirit mediums that Seiko Ayase was his only hope. This eventually pushed Enjoji to get in touch with Seiko, hoping that she would finally be able to find some solution to the unsettling events surrounding the spirit.

Seiko ended up inviting Jin Enjoji to her house after learning about the crisis he was going through. These events set the stage for his reunion with Momo Ayase, his childhood friend. The duo hadn’t talked since their grade school days, and the sudden encounter filled Momo with awkward tension. Jiji, being Jiji, greeted her with his usual carefree attitude. Meanwhile, Momo, puzzled by his sudden arrival, protested his staying at the Ayase house.
However, Jin soon came clean about the bitter truth. He revealed the shocking events that had transpired in his haunted house and also mentioned how he could see spirits now. Having ridiculed Momo in the past, Jiji felt guilty and genuinely apologized for the hurt he had caused. With that, the childhood friends finally managed to address and get over past resentment. However, since Seiko’s powers are limited to Kamigoe City, she entrusted the responsibility of exorcising the ghost in Jin’s house to Momo.
That idiot! I warned him, you can’t trust someone with the Evil Eye.
Momo, Okarun, and Jin went to the village to investigate the cursed house. They ended up discovering that the house was bound to a giant earthworm monster known as the Tsuchinoko. Also known as the Great Snake, it had been revered by the people of the village, and regular sacrifices had been made to it in the last two hundred years to keep the nearby volcano dormant. Tsuchinoko possesses dangerous powers, and when it crosses paths with Momo and her friends, it naturally tries to kill the trio.
In the chaos, Jin finally learns about the origins of the spirit that has been following him until now. It is revealed that the yokai is known as the Evil Eye, and it has been bound to the Tsuchinoko sacrificial house for years. Once upon a time, it was just an ordinary child who was unfortunately chosen as a sacrifice for the Tsuchinoko. After dying a cruel death and witnessing the deaths of many innocent kids like him, the spirit developed a deep-rooted hatred for humanity and vowed to exact revenge.
Jin felt sympathy for the young child, who never had his wish to play with someone fulfilled, and decided to find the room where his body had been left to rot all this time. But his good intentions ended up backfiring as he was possessed by the Evil Spirit. After the Tsuchinoko was defeated, Jin still needed Momo and her grandmother’s help to escape the clutches of the evil spirit. In the process, Jiji ended up becoming an indispensable member of Momo and Okarun’s eccentric group, which embarked on countless bizarre supernatural misadventures together.
