Given how much the series focuses on larger-than-life battles, it makes sense why some characters get stronger. Others, however, sadly get left in the dust. That said, there are quite a few characters in Dragon Ball who leave lasting impressions via their strength, even when it doesn’t seem like they would be particularly strong.

Master Roshi
Makes A Comeback In Dragon Ball Super And Showcases Some Surprising Strength
- Debut: “The Nimbus Cloud of Roshi” (Episode 3 of Dragon Ball)
While Master Roshi was a competent martial artist in Dragon Ball, the scale of the threats expanded so much in Dragon Ball Z that he was relegated to the sidelines. His pervy nature became his domineering character trait, which marked a major downfall for the Turtle Hermit.
However, in Dragon Ball Super, Roshi got numerous moments to shine. He held his own against the Frieza Force and went through a period of intense “training” to focus his mind and help him become a valiant member of the Universe 7 team in the Tournament of Power.

Pikkon
A Filler Character Who Was Strong Enough To Take On Goku
- Debut: “Warriors of the Dead” (Episode 195 of Dragon Ball Z)
Pikkon is a character introduced in the Other World Tournament, a filler arc that had a resounding impact on fans. Many viewers loved seeing Goku take on several strong warriors before eventually facing off against Pikkon in an epic battle.
This character ended up being strong enough to handle Goku at the peak of his powers and became a fan-favorite in the eyes of many. He eventually made an appearance in Fusion Reborn, too, and is still remembered fondly by many.

Videl
Training Under Gohan Had Splendid Results
- Debut: “Gohan Goes to High School” (Episode 200 of Dragon Ball Z)
Videl is one of the best characters in the Dragon Ball series, but she tends to shy away from battles nowadays. However, there was a time when she took pride in serving as a crime fighter who wanted to do justice to her reputation as the daughter of Earth’s greatest martial artist.

That said, it wasn’t until Videl trained under Gohan that she became a competent fighter. She gained the ability to fly via her ki, which is an incredibly impressive feat that highlights her surprising strength.

Arale Norimaki
A Cartoon Character Who Proves To Be A Challenge For Goku And Vegeta
- Debut: “Penguin Village” (Episode 55 of Dragon Ball)
Arale is a gag character who plays a central role in another popular Toriyama work. She has made an appearance in Dragon Ball from time to time, with her cameo in a Super filler episode showing how deceptively strong she was.
Since she operates using cartoon logic, Goku and Vegeta’s blows don’t faze her in the slightest. A highlight in this episode is when Vegeta believes he has defeated Arale by smacking her so hard that she flies away, only for her to travel around the world and hit Vegeta from behind, knocking him out and emerging victorious in the unlikeliest manner possible.
4
Botamo
The Fact That A Massive Bear Is Somehow A Powerful Warrior Is Hard To Believe
- Debut: “The Matches Begin! We’re All Off to the ‘Planet with No Name!'” (Episode 32 of Dragon Ball Super)
At a glance, Botamo looks like a joke character who has no business fighting in the same league as the Saiyans and other powerful warriors like Hit. However, it doesn’t take long for viewers to realize that this giant bear has his fair share of strengths.
He’s able to absorb an intense amount of damage, which makes him more resilient than the average warrior. There’s only so much damage he can take before he eventually reaches his limit, but that should take nothing away from his effectiveness in battle.
3
Kefla
The Fusion Of Caulifla And Kale Is Strong Enough To Handle A Powered-Up Goku
- Debut: “Bloodcurdling! The Explosive Birth of a New Super Warrior!” (Episode 114 of Dragon Ball Super)
While it’s true that a fused warrior is many times stronger than the sum of their parts, it’s still hard to believe that Kefla was so strong that she could outclass Goku in his Super Saiyan Blue form. Granted, he was tuckered out after just coming out of a grueling battle, but that excuse can only go so far.

He had to resort to the power of the imperfect Ultra Instinct form to finally outclass Kefla with one of the most disrespectful Kamehamehas of all time. It’s an iconic moment that justifies Kefla’s ridiculous power, since it led to one of the best visuals in the entirety of the Tournament of Power.

Ribrianne
The Power Of Love Is Stronger Than Most People Assumed
- Debut: “Which Universe Will Win Their Place? The Mighty Warriors Gradually Assemble!” (Episode 91 of Dragon Ball Super)
Most people will scoff at the Power of Love in Dragon Ball, assuming it to be a gag rather than a legitimate power boost. Brianne, along with the rest of the magical girls, doesn’t seem like much of a threat, with her transformation looking pretty ridiculous.
However, when Ribrianne steps up in combat, fans will realize exactly just how strong she is. Universe 7’s strongest warriors had trouble when going up against this foe, and they had to team up to knock Ribrianne and her companions out after a lengthy and grueling battle.

Garlic Jr.
A Filler Villain Who Can Duke It Out With The Best
- Debut: Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone
Garlic Jr. appeared as a villain in the first Dragon Ball Z movie, harboring a grudge towards Kami after he sealed his father away many years ago. He’s a surprisingly powerful foe who pushes the heroes to their very limits.
Even after supposedly being sent to the Dead Zone in his movie appearance, Garlic Jr. reappears after the Frieza Saga and gives the Z Warriors a run for their money once again. This was after Gohan and Piccolo managed to hold their own against the lower-tier transformations of Frieza, resulting in Garlic Jr’s strength becoming all the more shocking.
