Among all the characters in the magical world of Frieren, these are the ones that connect with audiences the most.
As Frieren and Fern are both mages, magic obviously plays a big role in the series. The show features a variety of different spells, ranging from simple yet useful to intricate and powerful. Here are some of the strongest spells used in the Frieren anime.
10
Sorganeil
A Powerful Binding Spell With Strict Restrictions
- First Used in Episode 20
- Main Users: Wirbel, Ubel
Sorganeil is a powerful binding spell that not only restricts a target’s movements by sight, but also prevents them from using any magic as well. The target is surrounded by two crossed circles, symbolizing their bondage. The spell was first used by Wirbel to stop Ubel from moving during their battle over the Stille, and it later became part of Ubel’s own magic arsenal.
Though an incredibly useful support spell, Sorganeil has a handful of restrictions. One major restriction is that the user must keep the target’s full body in sight. Otherwise, the binding will come undone. This keeps the caster from closing in while binding the target, or from binding opponents too large for their range of sight.
9
Balterie
Blood Manipulating Magic That Seeks Out Its Targets
- First Used in Episode 8
- Main User: Lugner
Blood manipulation is Lugner’s specialty, one that allows him to use his own blood as a weapon. He can manipulate his blood at will, allowing him to form all kinds of weapons with which he can slash, pierce, and destroy his opponents. His blood also allows him to track any person if they have even a drop of it on them, making it incredibly suited to hunting down a target.
Of his various spells utilizing his blood, Lugner’s signature spell, Balterie, is his most used. The spell creates blood tendrils, which allow him to harden his blood into spears to attack his enemies. They can also defend against various attacks, though they are very brittle as well.
8
Zoltraak
A Once-Mighty Spell That Now Serves As Foundation
- First Used in Episode 3
- Main Users: Qual, Frieren, Fern
Zoltraak was once the signature spell of Qual, one of the Seven Sages of Destruction. The spell was able to pierce any and all defenses, making it an incredibly deadly spell to fight against. It could be cast as a single shot, a volley of small shots, or as a large charged up blast, giving it all kinds of versatility.

After sealing Qual away, Frieren learned Zoltraak and helped humans understand the spell, soon incorporating it into their magical system. Now Zoltraak is a fundamental spell that all mages learn, and Frieren has even modified it further to be especially effective against demons, which is where it originated in the first place.
7
Reelseiden
A Blade That Cuts With The Power Of Visual Imagination
- First Used in Episode 20
- Main User: Ubel
Reelseiden is Ubel’s signature spell, one that allows her to cut anything as long as she thinks she can cut it. In truth, Reelseiden is a weak spell, as, although it can cut extremely quickly and is hard to keep track of, it can be easily defended by basic defensive magic.
However, in the hands of Ubel, who has an incredibly strong sense of visual imagination, it can be incredibly deadly. Because of her own understanding of what is common sense, Ubel can use Reelseiden to cut things others would not be able to with the same spell, such as Sense’s hair.
6
Waldgose & Daosdorg
A Combination Spell That Summons A Firestorm
- First Used in Episode 21
- Main User: Denken
This spell combination was used by Denken in his fight against Frieren during the first phase of the 1st Class Mage Exam. Waldgose first summons a massive tornado, and Daosdorg transforms it into a blaze, creating a massive inferno that engulfs the area in flames.
Though the spell was easily defended against by Frieren, it was easily one of the most powerful spells Denken cast during the 1st Class Mage Exam. It was powerful enough for Sense to worry that the barrier around the exam area might break, though Genau dismissed her worries.
5
Judradjim
A Blistering Lightning Storm
- First Used in Episode 25
- Main User: Frieren
Despite being an avid collector of spells, Frieren has used very few combat spells over the course of the series, often relying on Zoltraak for most of her combat needs. However, when faced with her own clone during the second phase of the 1st Class Mage Exam, Frieren was forced to bring out this powerful spell against it.

The world of magic in Frieren is dominated by these individuals who in different ways outmatch their opponents.
Judradjim summons a flurry of lightning bolts that fire off in all directions. Though the potency of the spell is hard to gauge due to the clone casting her own Judradjim to negate it, even the short glimpse of it shows it to be incredibly powerful, as it seems to flood the room with lightning bolts.
4
Vollzanbel
A Torrent Of Unceasing Flame
- First Used in Episode 25
- Main User: Frieren
This is another incredibly powerful spell used by Frieren during the fight against her clone during the second phase of the 1st Class Mage Exam. Vollzanbel releases a massive blast of flame, incinerating anything that it touches.
The flames produced by Vollzanbel are incredibly powerful, able to completely burn away a large column of rock that was about to fall on both Frieren and her clone. Once again, the potency of this spell is questionable due to Frieren’s clone countering it with her own Vollzanbel, yet by appearance alone, it seems to be incredibly powerful.
3
Reamstroha
A Destructive Blast Of Water
- First Used in Episode 21
- Main User: Kanne
Despite being a strong user of water-based magic, Kanne had difficulty demonstrating her strength due to the lack of water in the area that the first phase of the 1st Class Mage Exam took place in. That changed when Frieren destroyed the barrier around the area, allowing the rain to get in.
With the added rain water, Kanne was able to cast Reamstroha, which allowed her to create a titanic ball of water with which she used to batter Richter with. The spell was powerful enough to shatter his defensive barrier with ease, and even Frieren admits that she’d have a hard time beating Kanne when it is raining.
2
Hair Manipulation
Vicious Locks That Turn Into Deadly Tendrils
- First Used in Episode 24
- Main User: Sense, Sense’s clone
Despite claiming to be a pacifist that likes cooperation, Sense’s unnamed signature magic is one of the deadliest in the series. Having said that, the original Sense is never seen using her hair in actual combat, preferring to use her magic as substitute limbs.
Sense’s clone in the Ruins of the King’s Tomb, however, is a completely different beast. The clone has no qualms about using its hair for combat, which it does with swift and deadly efficiency. In the clone’s hands, Sense’s hair becomes deadly spears, destructive drills, and vicious whips. Of the many clones wandering the Ruins of the King’s Tomb, Sense’s clone is easily one of the deadliest.
1
Auserlese
The Domineering Magic Of Control
- First Used in Episode 10
- Main User: Aura
The signature spell of Aura the Guillotine, Auserlese manifests as a pair of scales known as the Scales of Obedience. The scales weigh the souls of the caster and the target, and whichever soul has less mana must obey the words of the winner.
Though the spell demands complete submission, it is possible for those with a strong will to resist the magic. However, Aura prevents any insubordination by beheading those she controls with Auserlese, making it essentially irresistible. The spell was defeated only through Frieren’s deception of Aura, as well as her massive mana reserve.
