Prioritizing defense, counterattacks, and a more reactive approach to combat in general, the Water God Style is one of the three major schools of swordsmanship in Rifujin na Magonote’s Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. Within this world, the headquarters of the Water God school are in Ars, the capital of the Asura Kingdom on the Central Continent. It is occasionally viewed as the last of the three schools due to its somewhat passive nature. The roots of this style stretch back to the distant past of the Six-Faced World which is the setting of the main series. As legend goes, the one who first attained the rank of Water God — the highest in this school of swordsmanship — was a lowly swordsman who defeated the Water Dragon King that had been laying siege to a nation.
Due to the massive destruction to life and property caused by the Water Dragon King, the ruler of the land issued a declaration, offering his title and his daughter’s hand in marriage to anyone capable of defeating it. On defeating the Water Dragon King, the man, who would come to be known as Reidar, was given a massive financial reward, but the king withheld his title and his daughter from him. Dejected, Reidar left, only to be met by the princess, who pledged herself to him. From then on, there was a tradition that the Water God’s spouse would abandon their household.
Counterattacks And Solid Defense
Fundamentally, the Water God Style focuses on parrying, counterattacking, and a solid defensive technique in its approach to swordsmanship. The idea is to force the opponent to take the initiative, and then analyze and anticipate their moves to develop effective countermeasures to the threat they pose. As it is vital for the Water God Style to react to an opponent’s attack instead of attacking first, the style also involves the art of provocation to direct the situation in their favor.
Those who reach a high level in this school of swordsmanship can use Battle Aura, and even read the flow of mana in their opponents to determine how to respond to their moves with the aid of their senses. Water God Style users do possess some advantage against practitioners of the Sword God Style, which emphasizes moving first, if the two combatants are at similar skill levels. This advantage quickly disappears if the Sword God Style user is of a vastly higher level, as the Water God Style user will not be able to react to the sheer speed and force of the attack directed towards them.
Alternatively, they may be forced on to the back foot when facing off against the unpredictable and underhanded approach of the North God Style, where their sudden attacks, misdirection, and adaptability, may provide an effective response to the counterattacks of the Water God Style. Knights, nobles, and those charged with protecting someone often make use of the Water God Style due to its defensive solidity. Practitioners of this school also generally don full body armor and heavy equipment, as mobility is not as vital to this style.
Techniques Under The Water God Style
At the foundation of the Water God Style is the idea of “Flow,” a basic counterattacking technique that can be channeled into all the more advanced forms of this school of swordsmanship in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. Mastering this concept is said to grant the practitioner the power to return virtually any attack directed towards them, attesting to how important a role it plays in the Water God Style.
Next, there are a series of five ultimate techniques collectively known as the “Five Secret Arts,” which together, serve as the goal that all practitioners strive to attain. Only the first Water God was able to master all five of them, and becoming an expert user of even one of these techniques is said to be extremely difficult. If a Water God Style user seeks to ascend to the rank of Water God, they must master at least three of these techniques.
The first Water God introduced in the story, Reida Reia, developed another sixth technique by combining the two most difficult ones among the Five Secret Arts. Sometimes referred to as the phantom “Sixth Secret Art,” this technique is known as “Deprivation Sword Kingdom.” After taking a stance that is stationary, the user will then read all the possible movements of their opponents to unleash a fearsome slash that decimates everything in their vicinity in one fell swoop.
Becoming The Water God
At the Beginner and Intermediate levels, Water God Style users are taught the fundamentals of “Flow” and its various applications, while from the Advanced rank and upwards, users will be able to use Battle Aura to enhance their physical capabilities. Much like the other schools, the ranks in the Water God Style follow the hierarchy of Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Water Saint, Water King, Water Emperor, and finally, Water God.
As mentioned previously, a candidate must have mastered at least three of the Five Secret Arts to be eligible for the title of Water God. There can only be one swordsman at the rank of Water God, whereas all ranks below it can accommodate any number of swordsmen as long as their skill level is sufficient. Additionally, all those who earned the title of Water God would take on the name of Reida Reia — if they were female — and Reida Reidar if they were male.
