After its long-awaited reveal in the anime, Luffy’s Gear 5th stands as a threat to many of the series’ big players.

Now finally on display for anime fans to see, Luffy’s Gear 5 has sent One Piece fans into total excitement for what is left to come. While the attacks on display are animated and conveyed in a comedic manner given the purpose of Gear 5 and Luffy being Joyboy, each attack does far more damage than many fans may assume.
As described by Kaido in Chapter 1045, while Luffy is in Gear 5, he is fully coated in both Armament and Conqueror’s Haki, making every punch or kick more powerful than ever. Sticking with this, some of the matchups against other characters in the series that may have been very hard for Luffy to defeat are now much more interesting after Luffy’s peak, to say the least.

5 Enel (Goro Goro no Mi)
Without any doubt, even before Luffy learned about Haki and his current awakening, Enel stood no chance against Luffy. While Enel stands as a threat to almost everyone else in the series, especially if the character was to make an appearance at this stage of the story, Luffy is Enel’s natural enemy as he is made of rubber, countering his electricity.
With Gear 5th, if Luffy and Enel were to cross paths again with the prospect of battle, fans would very likely witness Enel’s humiliation. Despite his mastery in Observation Haki, which is referred to as Mantra on Skypiea, Luffy’s mastery of all Haki after learning to use Conqueror’s Haki infusion to defeat Kaido alone would be enough to make it lights out for Enel.
4 Kizaru (Pika Pika no Mi)
As the current arc Egghead Island is building toward a showdown between Luffy and Kizaru, fans feel as though Eiichiro Oda may be setting up another showcase similar to the Straw Hats’ return to Sabaody. After standing no chance against Kizaru during the pre-time skip, the outcome on this occasion will likely be very different.
Given Gear 5’s capabilities of deflecting attacks and using them as a counter as seen in Luffy’s bout with Kaido, the same could be replicated here with Kizaru, with his light beams. While it is very obvious how dangerous Kizaru still is even after Luffy’s awakening, after convincingly defeating Kaido after a long battle in base form alone, it is more than enough to suggest that the Hito Hito no Mi Model Nika would suffice.
3 Bartolomeo (Bari Bari no Mi)
While it is important to mention that Luffy will likely never battle Bartolomeo, considering his position in the Straw Hat Grand Fleet, Gear 5 is one of the few counters against the Bari Bari no Mi. With it being very difficult and almost impossible to break Bartolomeo’s barrier, especially since that is the entire function of his Devil Fruit, the fact that Luffy can influence any object to his own liking, this could be the closest thing to overcoming the Bari Bari no Mi.
Displayed while fighting Kaido, Luffy could punch through Kaido’s body by turning it into rubber, and considering how tough and durable Kaido is, this stands as a huge feat for Gear 5. By this logic, Luffy could punch through the barrier itself without breaking it, and reach the intended target.
2 Big Mom (Soru Soru no Mi)
As both Manga and Anime fans await clarification on the fate of Big Mom after her defeat to Law and Kid, questions as to how a full-fledged one-on-one between Luffy and Big Mom would play out. Before his awakening, Luffy shared multiple brief encounters with the former Yonko, one of which showcased Luffy’s invulnerability to her lighting attack.
With Gear 5 now in the mix, many fans will agree that Luffy against Big Mom will be a completely different story. Just as she can conjure different abilities and make herself much more of a threat with her Devil Fruit capabilities, Luffy can also do the same, making himself a giant, and fighting in a completely free nature. As it is likely that fans have yet to see the full potential of Gear 5, if the pair were to encounter one another before the end of the story, Luffy would likely leave with the victory.
1 Blackbeard (Gura Gura no Mi)
While fans know that Blackbeard’s Yami Yami no Mi will leave Luffy without the ability to utilize Gear 5, his second Devil Fruit the Gura Gura no Mi, is one Gear 5 can indeed counter. Since the environment and any object that Luffy comes into contact with can be turned into rubber if Blackbeard attempted to use this during a duel against Luffy, these would negate any chance of damaging the environment or the Thousand Sunny.
This is also dependent on just how far Blackbeard has come with his Haki, and whether this is on or close to the same levels as Luffy’s. Despite the advantages both characters maintain when it comes to their Devil Fruits, it will very likely come down to a battle of Haki and who is more proficient with its usage.
