One Piece: 7 Underrated Villains

These One Piece villains unfortunately don’t receive quite as much attention as some of their peers, even though they really should.

Highlights

  • Beloved villains like Doflamingo and Kaido shine, but underrated foes like Black Maria also bring big battles to One Piece.
  • Captivating villains like Kanjuro and Monet, though overlooked, play crucial roles in major story arcs like Wano and Punk Hazard.
  • Characters like Bellamy, Kuro, Wapol, and Hogback showcase Oda’s skill in creating complex and evolving villains in One Piece.

One Piece is a series that’s become renowned for its amazing cast of unique characters, and this most definitely includes the villains that appear throughout the story. Whether it’s the endlessly charismatic Doflamingo, the immensely powerful Kaido, or the numerous Marine Admirals, there are plenty of One Piece villains who have deservedly earned a lot of praise from the community, but this hasn’t exactly been the case for all of them.

One Piece: 24 Characters With The Saddest Backstories

There are quite a few tragic characters in the world of One Piece. These individuals possess some pretty sad backstories.

Considering the staggering number of characters that are featured within the One Piece narrative, it makes sense that at least a few antagonists would inevitably end up going under the radar, even though they probably deserve a lot more credit than they receive.

1
Black Maria

She May Be Overshadowed By Her Tobiroppo Companions, But Black Maria Still Brings A Lot To The Table

Black Maria raising her fists

Black Maria is a loyal member of Kaido’s Tobiroppo group, and though she often gets overshadowed by some of her more popular companions, like Ulti and Page One, she’s still a very formidable opponent who possesses a pretty unique fighting style. Standing at 27 feet tall, it’s fair to say that Black Maria is pretty gigantic, especially compared to her fellow Tobiroppo members, but when she activates her Devil Fruit, her lower body completely transforms into a huge black spider.

While residing in this form, she can spit out extremely durable webs which she often uses to string up her unlucky victims whom she then keeps as her pets. That’s not all though, as she also carries around a massive polearm that contains a flaming wheel at the tip which is sure to disintegrate anyone it makes contact with. Her intense fight with Robin and Brook highlights just how immensely strong Black Maria is, and she deserves a little more credit for how far she managed to push these two Straw Hats during their encounter.

2
Kuro

Captain Kuro Is A Very Fleshed Out Villain Who, Unfortunately, Only Gets A Little Screentime

Captain Kuro

Because of how early Kuro appears in the story, and his limited appearances, it can be easy to forget about him completely, but it’s clear that Oda spent a good amount of time and effort to make this guy much more than a simple one-note antagonist. Despite once being a pirate himself, Kuro eventually developed a seething hatred for anything even remotely related to piracy. This caused him to turn on his crew, even sacrificing his shipwright in an attempt to trick the Marines into thinking he had been killed so that his bounty could be revoked.

One Piece: Who Is The Most Charismatic Villain In The Series?

One Piece’s villains are as charismatic as they are devious, but which of them has the biggest personality?

Though he may not get much screentime, Kuro still has a pretty fascinating backstory that not only sees him being directly opposed to the Straw Hats but also being an enemy of the Marines. Added to this, he also has a pretty unique weapon in the form of his Cat Claws, and can even utilize Nukiashi to move at frightening speeds so that he can outmaneuver his enemies.

3
Wapol

Rather Than Disappearing After Drum Island, Wapol Has Only Become Bigger And Better Throughout The Story

Weapon with a massive grin on his face

In a story arc that was full of emotional moments and extremely important characters who were highly relevant to the plot, the clumsy and childish Wapol came across as a pretty lackluster antagonist who never really felt like a huge threat throughout Drum Island. After the time-skip though, there are small hints that after he was defeated by the Straw Hats all those years ago, Wapol had been making quite a name for himself, even becoming the ruler of the Black Drum Kingdom.

He even manages to be invited to the Levely, and though he’s still just as nonsensical as ever, it’s clear that his terrifying ability to eat and consume anything has made him pretty important in the long run. Oda could have easily brushed Wapol off to the side after his humiliating defeat, but he’s made him a pretty relevant individual within the wider world who still manages to command at least some level of authority.

4
Hogback

Hogback’s Sick And Twisted Personality Results In Him Being A Pretty Fascinating Villain

Hogback and Cindy

At the beginning of the Thriller Bark arc, once Luffy and the Straw Hats finally make their way onto the ship after their introduction to Brook, it seems as though Hogback would be the one to assume the role of the arc’s main villain, that is until Moria shows up. Hogback’s menacing appearance and maniacal laugh are enough to send a shiver down the spine of even the most seasoned horror buffs, and the references scattered around his room dedicated to his late wife Cindry add yet another layer of creepiness to his overall character.

The reason Hogback joined Moria’s gang in the first place was so that he would be able to resurrect Cindry, and this inspired the mad “Doctor” to continue with his experiments to see how far he could go while under the command of the great Gecko Moria. Hogback is very relevant to the larger world of One Piece, having been a world-renowned doctor who even Chopper looked up to at one point in time, and he also plays a very big role in running Thriller Bark since he’s the one who manufactures all the zombies, along with several other monstrosities that the Straw Hats face.

5
Bellamy

Bellamy Goes Through A Huge Character Arc From The Momeny Luffy Beats Him In Jaya

Bellmay standing above Luffy

When Bellamy first appears early in the story during the Jaya Arc, he comes across as nothing more than a loudmouthed pirate captain who doesn’t pose much of a threat to the Straw Hats. In fact, Luffy manages to take out the high and mighty captain with a single punch during their first encounter, so it seems as though Oda was simply using him as nothing more than a punching bag or a gag character. It was therefore a huge surprise when Bellamy turned up once again during Dressrosa where he now took on a more cold and stoic personality while acting as Doflamingo’s right-hand man.

These characters have been surpassed by Luffy in One Piece’s final saga.

Being able to work under his childhood hero was a dream come true for Bellamy, and as a result, he tries desperately to apprehend Luffy and the gang during their escapade through Dressrosa, before it’s then revealed that he’s been used as a simple pawn in Doflamingo’s game. Bellamy goes through a pretty big and quite emotional character arc that sees him grow from an arrogant leader to a much more sympathetic character, and that’s a testament to just how amazing Oda is at writing and developing his villains over time.

6
Monet

Monet Really Ought To Get More Credit For Her Striking Design And Infectious Charisma

Monet grabbing Luffy's shoulders with her legs

Because Caesar Clown was ultimately the big bad main villain of the Punk Hazard arc, it unfortunately means that his loyal companion, Monet, can often be overlooked. This is a sad reality though, as Monet actually brings quite a lot to the table, and though her lasting influence hasn’t been anywhere near as prevalent as Caesar, she’s still nonetheless a very intriguing villain with arguably one of the most striking designs in the entire series.

Monet is instantly recognizable for her giant feathered wings and bird-like legs, which resemble the appearance of a harpy. Behind the smiles and laughs though, Monet is also a very sadistic individual who takes great pleasure in seeing her enemies squirming in pain, as seen when she laughs at Law after he’s just been mercilessly beaten down by Vergo. Her design, unique abilities, and intriguing personality all make Monet a great villain who really ought to be talked about a lot more than she is.

7
Kanjuro

He May Be Just One Of Many Villains Seen In Wano, But Kanjuro Plays A Huge Role Within This Story Arc

Kanjuro holding Momonosuke

The Wano arc introduced a plethora of new villains to the story who all worked under the immensely powerful Yonko known as Kaido. While the likes of Queen, King, and even Kaido himself have all turned out to be fan-favorites after the events of Wano, one character who has unfortunately been largely forgotten about, but who also made a massive impact on the story when their true motives were revealed, was Kanjuro. Initially acting as one of the Red Scabbards, once the assault on Onigashima is about to get underway, it’s revealed that Kanjuro has been working as a spy for Orochi the entire time, and even went as far as to kidnap Momonosuke to disrupt the Straw Hat and samurai alliance.

Kanjuro’s reasoning for teaming up with Orochi is so that he could avenge the unfair persecution of his parents, prompting him to seek revenge on all of Wano by aligning himself with one of the most despicable yet powerful men in the entire country. Kanjuro’s reveal was extremely unexpected, and considering the extremes he goes to in order to try and prevent the raid on Onigashima, he’s an incredibly important figure within the story of that specific arc as a result.
