One Piece: Best Devil Fruits Not Used For Combat

Devil Fruits are most commonly used as a method of combat. Virtually every Devil Fruit power can be used to either directly damage an opponent or otherwise incapacitate them in a way that leaves them more susceptible to being damaged. That said, certain Devil Fruits have not been seen utilized in a directly combative manner, and still have a level of utility nonetheless.

Oftentimes, these users still have some level of combat expertise, it simply does not overlap with the powers themselves, at least not in a direct manner. These Devil Fruits are the best ones not to have direct combat utility.

Mane Mane no Mi

User: Bentham “Mr. 2 Bon Clay” and Kurozumi Higurashi (Formerly)

Close

  • Debut: Chapter 156 (Manga), Episode 92 (Anime)

Bentham, formerly known by the alias Mr. 2 Bon Clay, was the fifth-highest ranked member of Baroque Works, an operation led by Crocodile to take Alabasta, with its top members being promised power relative to their rank in the group. He has since been voluntarily incarcerated at Impel Down, allowing many former allies to escape. His loyalty was also displayed to the likes of Luffy, who he helped escape from the prison and even saved the life of, during a particularly vulnerable moment. He is an accomplished martial artist, whose style of kenpo was particularly lethal. However, he was also an accomplished actor, who could use his Devil Fruit, the Mane Mane no Mi, to suitably impersonate anyone he had touched, with his body physically being identical to theirs.

He was not capable of manifesting certain aspects of the users he had touched which were not intricately connected to their body, such as their outfits or weapons. That said, his acting was enough to throw people off that the Straw Hat Pirates tattooed themselves with an X to avoid being tricked by Bentham, due to the quality of his impersonations.

However, his ability had a drawback, as he could not use his fighting style whilst transformed into anyone else. Yet with a measured combination of deception and knowing when to strike, Bentham could land as many lethal attacks as he wanted, while not suffering any damage. Betham and Sanji fought a long and tense battle, showing just how skilled a martial artist he is.

The Mane Mane no Mi can have especially devastating consequences if its user touches the face of a figure with significant political power. Bentham had touched Nefetari Cobra’s face in an effort to impersonate him, as part of the operation to take over Alabasta. This ability was also the primary use of the Mane Mane no Mi when it was eaten by Kurozumi Higurashi.

She impersonated various members of the Kozuki clan, as part of an ultimately successful effort to gain power for the Kurozumi clan. However, her final transformation, into Oden’s son, Momonosuke, angered Kaido, who was in the process of dueling with Oden. This transformation was designed to throw him off guard, and Kaido viewed it as an especially dirty trick. He subsequently killed Higurashi himself, helping cause the chain of events that would lead to Bentham eventually acquiring the Devil Fruit’s powers.

Kuku Kuku no Mi

User: Streusen

Close

  • Debut: Chapter 868 (Manga), Episode 832 (Anime)

Streusen is an elderly pirate and chef, who has been a near constant companion of Big Mom since being impressed by her skills and appetite as a young girl. Like many of his crewmates in the Big Mom Pirates, he has a food-themed Devil Fruit, albeit not one seen in direct combat. In the past, around the time he acquainted himself with Linlin, Streusen was seen chopping a log into slices of meat, which he could eat immediately with no further preparation. This was the power of his Devil Fruit, the Kuku Kuku no Mi.

A user who eats this Devil Fruit will never have to go hungry, as they can transform inanimate objects into a nourishing meal. Unfortunately, much like Devil Fruits themselves, the actual food produced as a result of this power is said to have a terrible taste. Streusen himself is ironically a superb cook. The Kuku Kuku no Mi has some extra utility outside its primary function. In his 90s, Streusen had become skilled enough with the Devil Fruit to the point where he can immediately transform something upon stabbing it. He used this technique to save citizens from the collapsing Whole Cake Château, by transforming it into a sponge cake, lessening the impact of the fall.

Toki Toki no Mi

User: Kozuki Toki (Formerly)

Close

  • Debut: Chapter 920 (Manga), Episode 910 (Anime)

Kozuki Toki was the wife of Kozuki Oden, a legend in Wano Country, who was slated to become its next daimyo. However, she herself originated way before Oden’s time, having been born in the Void Century. She was part of the Amatsuki daimyo family, but had little knowledge of Wano itself. Using the Toki Toki no Mi, Toki jumped up to 20 years into the future. This power allowed her to live through many different time periods. Every time a danger presented itself, Toki would simply travel into the future, until it subsided. It is worth noting that this Devil Fruit can under no circumstances travel back in time, it can only move people forward. That said, Toki can also use this power on others, as well as herself.

She largely stopped using it 30 years before the present, when she met with Oden by chance, as she was being attacked on an island, whilst he was undergoing a hazing ritual to join the Whitebeard Pirates. Despite wanting to join the crew, Oden broke the rules to rescue her from her plight, scaring off a pirate crew who attacked her. After treating his wounds, the pair met with Whitebeard, who allowed them both to join his crew.

As Kurozumi Orochi, the new shogun of Wano, was attempting to hunt the Kozuki clan, Toki sent her son, Momonosuke, and some of his retainers, four of the group known as the Nine Red Scabbards, 20 years into the future, as a fail-safe to ensure Wano would have resistance to rally around no matter what. Her subsequent death meant the Devil Fruit had returned into circulation. Though if anyone has eaten it since remains unknown.

Poke Poke no Mi

User: Blamenco

Close

  • Debut: Chapter 553 (Manga), Episode 461 (Anime)

Blamenco was the Sixth Division Commander of the Whitebeard Pirates. Due to how massive the crew was at the time of the Summit War, various trusted pirates, such as Blamenco, were allowed a level of authority over portions of it. The crew has gone into hiding since the Payback War, where they were defeated by the Blackbeard Pirates. It is not expressly known what happened to Blamenco during this time, but lack of further information regarding the pirate means he possibly survived, and still has his powers intact.

Blamenco’s Devil Fruit only had a small window of screen time, though this may lead some to ignore exactly how practical it is in terms of utility. The Poke Poke no Mi allows its user to create pockets on their body, in which a seemingly infinite amount of objects can be stored. Blamenco was seen using this hammerspace, appropriately, to pull out a gigantic mallet, much larger than the right chin pocket it was stored within. Although only seen for storage of one weapon, its apparently infinite amount of storage means the user can consistently package a number of resources within themselves, which could include food, valuables, and virtually anything that has the capacity to be stored. Additionally, Oda has said that if Usopp was allowed a Devil Fruit, it would be this one. This makes sense when one considers the many resources that have made up his arsenal during his time traveling the seas as a pirate.

Nomi Nomi no Mi

User: Dr. Vegapunk (Formerly?)

Close

  • Debut: Chapter 1066 (Manga), Episode 1096 (Anime)

Dr. Vegapunk was a brilliant scientist who was responsible for many advances in many fields of science. These were attributable to both his brilliant mind, and the eiditic memory afforded to him by his Devil Fruit, the Nomi Nomi no Mi. This Devil Fruit allowed his brain to constantly expand, giving him the ability to store new knowledge and practically apply it, continually creating new advances in various scientific fields. This had a minor drawback of expanding his head to fit his growing brain until he reached the height of giants.

However, with his brilliance, he was able to remotely wire himself to his brain, which he stored into a machine that accommodated for its growth, which was known as Punk Records. Its ability to connect people remotely, store, and spread knowledge has been compared to the internet, more specifically online reference publications. Due to all the knowledge it yielded, and the applications that its creator has used it for, the Nomi Nomi no Mi may be the single greatest Devil Fruit with no direct combat ability.

Vegapunk’s main body, which consumed the Devil Fruit, had passed away. Yet his Satellites, six beings who are derived from him and individually take after aspects of his personality, are still alive, and apparently share his knowledge. This makes it unclear exactly what happened to the Devil Fruit. It may have returned to circulation due to the body belonging to the one who ate it being killed.
