Warning: The following contains spoilers for chapter 1088 of One Piece, “Final Lesson,” by Eiichiro Oda, translated by Stephen Paul, and lettered by Vanessa Satone, now available in English from MangaPlus.
The Final Saga of Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece has been delivering chapter after chapter of high-octane action, major reveals, and breathtaking moments, as the story starts to build up to its final crescendo. Most recently, the battle between the Blackbeard Pirates and the Marine special forces unit SWORD on Hachinosu reached a resounding conclusion in Chapter 1088. With the fate of Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp left unclear, as he was last seen surrounded by the Blackbeard Pirates, fans will be wondering why the “Hero of the Marines” chose to sacrifice himself in order to allow his subordinates to escape.
One of the most intriguing takeaways from this incident is the relationship between Garp and his student Captain Koby. While little has been explained about the sort of rapport they share, as well as Koby’s own abilities, this recent chapter provided some insight into why Garp cares so deeply about his student, such that he was willing to sacrifice himself and the outcome of the mission just to save him. In fact, Garp’s sacrifice played a huge role in the outcome of the battle, as he was left grievously injured, and had to give himself up to Kuzan and Blackbeard’s men, allowing the captured Marines and SWORD officers to escape by the skin of their teeth. This may prompt fans to question why Garp was willing to go so far to protect Koby, and how this may foreshadow the role Koby might play in the remainder of One Piece.
Garp And Koby’s Relationship
Although little has been shown of the direct interactions between the pair, Garp and Koby seem to enjoy a very strong relationship as mentor and student Garp has even expressed his fondness for Koby on multiple occasions, including his arrival on Hachinosu when he explicitly described Koby as his beloved pupil. He seems to have the same high expectations for Koby as he does for his grandson, Monkey D. Luffy, and sees a great deal of potential in the young Marine.
Garp was quite impressed with Koby’s dedication to his training, as he undertook extra workouts to build up his punching power on realizing his perceived lack of aptitude for physical combat. This was the same kind of training that Garp did himself, and made his former student Kuzan perform, where they would punch the hulls of decommissioned battleships without any Haki or Devil Fruit, to improve their raw strength.
The elder Marine took Koby under his wing after witnessing his determination to become a great Marine and pure heart. It is obvious that their bond goes beyond that of a subordinate and his commanding officer, even if their interactions are far from intimate. Garp was also willing to disregard protocol and rush to Koby’s aid after he was captured following the Marines’ failed attempt to arrest the Pirate Empress Boa Hancock. With little regard for his own safety, Garp threw himself into the fray when he arrived at Hachinosu, and announced himself by through a devastating showcase of his power with his Galaxy Impact, which leveled the surrounding settlements and turned them into rubble.
Shiryu’s Underhanded Move
As the battle heated up and the Marines prepared to make their escape with the hostages they had rescued, Garp was confronted by his old student Kuzan — formerly known as Admiral Aokiji. The two went up against each other for the first time, inspiring fear in the minds of the other Blackbeard Pirates gathered around them with the contest between Garp’s Conqueror’s Haki infused punches and Kuzan’s Hie Hie no Mi attacks.
Amid this intense face off, Koby was tricked by a member of the Blackbeard Pirates masquerading as a kidnapped citizen, by crying out for help. Naturally, the young Marine rushed into save them, despite the protests of his comrades who warned him that it was obviously a trap. Unbeknownst to him, Shiryu of the Rain, one of the Ten Titanic Captains of the Blackbeard Pirates, who had eaten the Suke Suke no Mi, had used his powers of invisibility to sneak up on Koby and was preparing to deal a fatal blow to Koby.
However, Garp sensed the danger his pupil was in and threw himself in the way of Shiryu’s sword at the very last moment, allowing himself to be stabbed through the stomach. Although Garp immediately knocked Shiryu out with another power packed punch, this brought the battle between him and Kuzan to a premature conclusion, as the elder Marine was in bad condition and unable to stand up due to the serious injury he had sustained.
The Future Of The Marines
Chapter 1088 expanded upon the relationship between Garp and Koby while also reflecting on an important lesson that Garp taught to all new recruits. Posing a scenario where an old man and a baby were stranded on a boat with room only for one of them, Garp would ask his pupils what the appropriate course of action was. In his early days as a Marine, Koby answered by saying that he would get out of the boat to make room for both. This response was met with disdain by Garp, who explicitly stated that he needed to leave the old man behind and save the baby as the limitless potential of youth was the key to the future.
With his decision to save Koby, it seems as if Garp has taken this lesson to heart and chose to sacrifice himself to safeguard the future of the Marines. In his eyes, his own time is done, and he sees a worthy successor in Koby, as one who can emulate his own strength and prowess in combat and also work to bring about the change he sought to create within the corrupted order of the Marines and the World Government.
It is obvious that Garp holds Koby in extremely high regard and did not even think twice about taking Shiryu’s attack head on, despite how badly he was injured by it. His faith in Koby was repaid almost immediately afterward, when the young Marine Captain used Garp’s guidance to completely shatter the massive hand of Avalo Pizarro, another of Blackbeard’s Ten Titanic Captains, who had eaten the Shima Shima no Mi which permitted him to manipulate the topography of Pirate Island. This moment gave Garp the reassurance he needed, as he ordered the Marines to retreat and accepted his fate, knowing the future of the Marines was in the capable hands of his gifted protégé.
