- Luffy’s Devil Fruit Awakened In The Wano Arc of One Piece
Luffy is an incredibly powerful Devil Fruit user and that’s something fans know very well. He has the power of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, which he ate long ago when he was still 7. This fruit was in the possession of Shanks, and Luffy ate it as dessert, not knowing its importance. At first, Luffy’s powers were somewhat weak. In fact, fruit appeared to be a liability more often than not. However, with the right training and effort, Luffy started to utilize it effectively in battle, making himself an incredibly powerful Devil Fruit user. 10 years later, by the time Luffy was 17, he had already mastered the fruit to a great degree, so much so that the East Blue ended up being a breeze for him. Luffy defeated one enemy after another and moved to the Grand Line, where he fought stronger adversaries like the Shichibukai. Nonetheless, Luffy triumphed over them too, earning himself one big bounty after another. He took his Devil Fruit powers to the next level using his Gears, and eventually, incorporated the usage of Haki into it as well. Undoubtedly, Luffy was already na phenomenal Devil Fruit user by the time of the Wano arc.
This is the peak of my abilities, this is Gear 5! — Luffy
However, the true power of Devil Fruit truly awakened after he died following the battle against Kaido. This was when Luffy’s mind and body were one with the ability and he awakened what he calls Gear 5, his freedom form. Upon Luffy awakening the Gomu Gomu no Mi, it was revealed that this Devil Fruit was actually the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. It made Luffy the Warrior of Liberation who spreads laughter and joy wherever he goes and frees people from their misery. As the Sun God Nika, Luffy managed to defeat Kaido, showing everyone what tremendous strength he possessed. At this point, fans knew Luffy was the undisputed Sun God in the story. But, Elbaf seems to have shattered that perception and there appears to be another Sun God, and a different variation of Nika.
Why Loki Might Also Have The Nika Fruit
Loki Calls Himself The Sun God

Just like Luffy, Loki might have the Nika fruit as well. On paper, this sounds absolutely ridiculous and doesn’t even make sense. Yet, that is exactly what the story is leading us to believe at this point in time. Loki has been called the Accursed Prince, and at the same time, the Giant race believes that the day Loki is freed from his chains is when the world will end, Elbaf included. Loki refers to himself as the Sun God who will destroy the world, and it has already been made clear that Loki had eaten a legendary Devil Fruit passed down the royal line of Elbaf. It is said that Loki was willing to murder his own father for this Devil Fruit, which is successfully managed to do, and then go on a rampage that required the strength of an entire country to stop. Long story short, Loki is clearly believed by everyone in Elbaf to be capable of destroying the world. This comes on top of everyone in Elbaf already knowing what the Sun God Nika looks like. Everyone knows Nika has an all-white transformation from head to toe, and a booming laughter that is contagious. Yet, they still believe Loki is “the Sun God who will destroy the world.”
I am the Sun God who will destroy the world and reduce it to rubble. — Loki
Once again, this might make no sense at first, but looking into it a bit deeper might actually reveal a way where Loki truly does have the power of the Sun God. To make sense of this, one only has to look at the reasoning behind the existence of Devil Fruits. Devil Fruits are nothing but another look into human evolution that someone wished for. All Devil Fruit abilities that exist are a result of human desires. As such, the Nika Devil Fruit that exists is also a result of people’s wishes. The slaves of the One Piece world have always known Nika to be a liberator, so they wished for him to come and liberate them. As such, the Warrior of Liberation was born.

But, this is where things get interesting. Nika actually has two iterations. While some believe Nika to be a Warrior of Liberation, others believe Nika to be a God of Destruction. Due to the scriptures being incredibly old and undecipherable, it is unknown as to which version of Nika is the real one. As such, some people likely wished for the Warrior of Liberation version of Nika, giving birth to Luffy’s version of the Devil Fruit that Shanks had with him, and others wished for the God of Destruction version of the Devil Fruit, which is what was passed down Elbaf’s royal line and was eventually consumed by Loki. Clearly, this possibility of two different Nika fruits is real and it would fully comply with all Devil Fruit laws as well as their creation. If anything, it actually makes a lot of sense.
The Elbaf arc is sure to explain the truth of it all to the fans, and all they need to do is wait a bit longer and see Loki in action themselves, which, based on how things are going in the Underworld, shouldn’t be that far away now. It is entirely possible that fans will see two Nikas in the same arc fight side by side, or even against each other, and that certainly makes for an incredibly exciting story arc, especially when the likes of the Holy Knights, one of which looks like Shanks, are thrown into the mix. Fans simply need to sit back tightly and wait for Oda to go over these exciting mysteries and reveal the truth of it all.
