Lately, Eiichiro Oda has been delivering chapter after chapter of intense action, lore drops, and revelations, to ring in the Final Saga of One Piece. The last few chapters shifted the focus away from Vegapunk and the Straw Hats on Egghead Island and the events of the Levely to the island of Hachinosu — also known as Pirate Island — which now serves as the base of operations for the Blackbeard Pirates. During a hostage situation gone awry, members of the secret Marine Unit SWORD stormed the island to rescue the hostages, leading to dire consequences for both sides.
While the Marines were eventually able to escape the island after causing a considerable amount of damage to the island’s cityscape, they incurred a major casualty among their ranks. Due to the overwhelming odds stacked against them, the members of SWORD were forced to leave Vice Admiral Monkey D. Garp behind, as he had been gravely injured in the battle. With his fate hanging in the balance after Chapter 1088, One Piece fans will likely be debating whether there will be any effort made by the Marines or the World Government to save the “Hero of the Marines” from meeting an untimely end at the hands of Blackbeard and his crew.
The Situation On Hachinosu
After surrendering himself to the Blackbeard Pirates in exchange for the lives of the Marines who had accompanied him to Amazon Lily, Captain Koby was imprisoned on Hachinosu. Marshall D. Teach intended to use Koby as a bargaining chip to legitimize his dominion over Hachinosu, owing to Koby’s fame and reputation among the Marines. However, after Blackbeard left the island, Koby managed to escape with the aid of Perona, and also managed to free some of the others that the Blackbeard Pirates had taken hostage.
Their escape attempt was noticed by Avalo Pizarro, one of Blackbeard’s Ten Titanic Captains, who used his Shima Shima no Mi powers to prevent the breakout. Simultaneously, an elite Marine force led by Monkey D. Garp arrived at the island and dealt a devastating blow to the pirates. As the conflict heated up, Garp went up against his former student Kuzan, previously known as Admiral Aokiji, who had recently joined Blackbeard’s crew. Unfortunately for Garp, he was forced to step in as Koby fell for an underhanded trap laid by Blackbeard’s subordinates, where they pretended to be endangered civilians.
When Koby rushed in to save them, Garp threw his body in the way of an attack by Shiryu of the Rain, another one of Blackbeard’s Captains, who snuck up on him due with his Suke Suke no Mi powers. Garp was seriously injured by Shiryu’s sword, and struggled to stand. When Avalo Pizarro attempted to destroy the escaping Marine vessel, Koby managed to destroy the massive arm of the Blackbeard Pirates Captain with his devastating Honesty Impact. Since all the Marines had been accounted for, Garp ordered them to retreat and resigned himself to his fate, entrusting the future to the new generation.
A Last Ditch Effort By SWORD
In the following days, Garp was declared missing in action, and his current fate is unknown, This situation bears many parallels to the abduction of Ace by Blackbeard which directly triggered the events of the Summit War of Marineford prior to the time skip. At present, there are a number of ways in which Garp’s situation could play out. First off, instead of Koby, Blackbeard might use him as leverage to have Hachinosu recognized as a legitimate nation under the World Government. This would be the most plausible outcome considering Garp’s fame and standing among the Marines. Alternatively, he might also be handed over to Cross Guild in exchange for his bounty, or be publicly executed, although both these options seem far-fetched for a figure as prominent as Garp.
While a follow-up rescue effort by the Marines is more than plausible, there are a number of hurdles preventing this from taking place, due to the resources they had already committed to freeing Koby from Blackbeard’s clutches. Moreover, going in again to save Garp may be far less feasible if Blackbeard and his Ten Titanic Captains return in full force to Hachinosu, in which case an all out war is more than likely. It might be easier for the World Government to negotiate with Blackbeard as they did over Ace in the past, although this would place additional questions on their authority and the declining position of the marines among the Three Great Powers.
Alternatively, much like Garp did when attempting to rescue Koby, a quick assault by a smaller force of Marines from the special unit SWORD may be a more likely course of action. In this case, the World Government and the Marines will be risking far less, as they have eliminated any ties to this elite force of Marines. There is no question that Koby, Helmeppo, and a host of other Garp loyalists would have no hesitation to dive in again and save their mentor, even if means defying direct orders from their commanding officers. Such an operation may even be backed by high-ranking Marines such as Sengoku or Tsuru who have close ties to Garp.
Sakazuki’s Potential Opposition
On the other hand, there are a number of individuals within the Marines who might object to another intervention by the Marines on Hachinosu. Chief among them would be Fleet Admiral Sakazuki, formerly known as Akainu, who shows absolutely no respect for Garp, despite the latter’s status as a hero among the Marines. This is mainly due to Garp’s relation to Dragon and Luffy, which Sakazuki views as massive taint on his reputation. In turn, Garp also seems to dislike Sakazuki, and he even stated that he would have killed the Fleet Admiral at Marineford in retribution for Ace, had Sengoku not pinned him down. As a result, it is extremely likely that Sakazuki will attempt to stifle any rescue attempt, although he will still have to go through Commander-in-Chief Kong who still has a very high opinion of Garp.
Garp also openly shows his contempt for the World Nobles, which could be another reason why the Marines may not set out to save him. Through his capture, the Five Elders and Celestial Dragons have found a means to eliminate someone who could potentially spread dissent against the corruption that is rampant within the World Government, by having him heroically die in battle. This would also prevent any negative public opinion surrounding the government’s handling of events on Hachinosu, as Garp’s fame and public image have been overwhelmingly positive for decades. Whatever happens, One Piece fans can be assured that things will heat up even further going forward, when more will be revealed about Garp’s ultimate fate, with even a rescue attempt by Luffy and the Straw Hats potentially on the cards.
