The original Sleeping Dogs video game was released in 2012 and the open world RPG starring an undercover cop who immerses himself in the world of organized crime was popular enough that back in 2017, talk began that the story of Sleeping Dogs might be good enough to make a movie out it. Now in 2024 a star of the MCU is officially working to finally get that done.
Set in contemporary Hong Kong, the story of the Sleeping Dogs video game follows undercover police officer Wei Shen who infiltrates the Sun On Yee Triad organization. Gameplay focuses on Wei Shen’s martial arts moves, fighting, shooting and parkour abilities, and on gadgets that can be used for combat and exploration. Players can either complete missions or roam the game’s open world and finish missions that are either legal or criminal. The gmae also had a “heat” rating that was similar to what the Grand Theft Auto franchise offers where enough heat will bring the police and then characters will need to escape and avoid capture to reduce the heat.

Sleeping Dogs Movie Has Marvel Star Behind It

On Thurday, Marvel star Simu Liu responded to a fan on social media who first mentioned that they wanted a sequel to the 12-year-old game but also thought that a Sleeping Dogs movie might be the way to go about getting the video game sequel. The actor surprisingly let the cat out of the bag, saying that he is “working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen.”
That certainly means that there is an effort to finally bring the Sleeping Dogs movie to life. However, it’s hardly the first time that’s happened. When the movie was first announced in 2017, it just seemed like the studio was slow playing things. There was even talking in 2020 that shooting was about to begin. However, nothing ever materialized and the project went quiet again.
Earlier this month, the Sleeping Dogs movie was officially cancelled after no news for several years. It would seem that would be why Liu is even able to talk about getting the rights to the movie. The big question now is what happens even if he manages to actually become the owner of this particular story. The Marvel actor was careful to make it clear that things are in the early stages and he certainly didn’t promise that it would eventually get made. Though the actor did seem optimistic in his post.
For fans of the video game, there is almost certainly some optimism about the idea of a Sleeping Dogs movie with a Marvel star driving the bus. The question is going to be the same as it was in 2017 and then 2020. With a game that is still popular in certain circles but is 12-years-old, is there enough interest for the movie to get made? That video game movies don’t tend to have a ton of success is going to be a strike against it as well.
