Solo Leveling Season 2 has been surprising us by giving quality episodes every week. Of course, some fans aren’t thrilled that the creators are skipping some conversational beats from the manhwa to move the story faster. However, that will eventually be forgiven as long as they don’t mess up the fight sequences.

Since Jin-Woo has caught the attention of some S-Rank Hunters, we are being introduced to some of the most powerful characters in the series. One such character is Sung II-Hwan, who we saw in the third episode of the anime series. Even though it all happened off-screen, we know that Sung II-Hwan defeated Hwang Dongsoo quite easily. Sung II-Hwan’s strength obviously grabbed everyone’s attention, but the main reason why everyone is eager to learn more about this character is his connection with Sung Jin-Woo.

Sung II-Hwan Was Korea’s Very First S-Rank Hunter

The Strongest Hunter In The Manhwa Series After Jin-Woo

Sung II-Hwan was a hardworking and noble man who worked as a firefighter, a profession suited for him since he always wanted to save lives. While on the job, he fell in love with Park Kyung-Hye and had two children with her, Sung Jin-Woo and Jinah. It was all a fairy tale for the family until, of course, the Gates appeared out of nowhere. Sung II-Hwan couldn’t ignore the threat that befell humanity, so he decided to leave his job as a firefighter and became a hunter. He was not just any hunter, though; he was the very first S-Rank Hunter to come out of Korea.

However, becoming Korea’s first S-Rank Hunter didn’t do Sung II-Hwan any good financially. We are talking about the time when there was no Hunter Association, which means no ranking system. No one actually knew that Sung II-Hwan was an S-Rank Hunter, so he couldn’t enjoy all the privileges that S-Rank Hunters enjoy in the present. Even after being the strongest Hunter in Korea, he couldn’t earn decent money for his family. That is why Jin-Woo had to put his life on the line to support his mother’s treatment after Sung II-Hwan’s disappearance.

Sung II-Hwan Disappeared While On A Dungeon Raid

He Was Trapped Inside The Dungeon For Ten Years

Sung II-Hwan went on to take part in Dungeon raids for several years, but one raid didn’t go as he had planned. Ten years before the present timeline, Sung II-Hwan got trapped inside a dungeon. Even with all the strength he had at the time, II-Hwan couldn’t find his way back to the human world. There was no way of helping Sung II-Hwan from the outside as well, so everyone presumed that he had died.

Sung II-Hwan defeated all the monsters, but the Hunter couldn’t fight starvation. However, before he could die of hunger, Rulers found Sung II-Hwan. They decided to help the Hunter and give him their powers, but on one condition — Sung II-Hwan will have to kill the new Shadow Monarch whenever the time comes. Almost a decade later, the S-rank Hunter appeared inside a Dungeon in America.

Hunters have seen all types of Dungeons throughout these years, and they’ve seen all sorts of monsters, but they never came across a human inside a Dungeon. So, even though Sung II-Hwan looked human, the A-Rank Hunters thought of him as a monster wearing human skin. Since Sung II-Hwan could only speak Korean, Hwang Dongsoo was called upon by the higher-ups to gather some information from Sung II-Hwan.

In an instant, in the blink of an eye, Mr. Hwang was defeated. He lost before the disaster spread.

It was supposed to be a normal conversation between two Hunters, but things go south when Sung II-Hwan senses Hwang Dongsoo’s bloodthirst for Jin-Woo. Hwang Dongsoo tells II-Hwan that his son is already dead, and realizing that Hwang Dongsoo wants to kill Jin-Woo, Sung II-Hwan unleashes his powers. We don’t see the fight on screen, but we do learn that Jin-Woo’s father defeated Hwang Dongsoo, an S-Rank Hunter, without breaking a sweat.

Sung II-Hwan Has Returned To Fulfill His End Of The Bargain

The Rulers Send Sung II-Hwan To Kill His Own Son

Close

After Sung II-Hwan’s return to Earth, Rulers opens an S-Rank gate in Japan and informs II-Hwan that his target, the next Shadow Monarch, is in the country. However, II-Hwan quickly realizes that his son is the new Shadow Monarch. And, well, as expected, he refuses to kill his own flesh and blood, the son he so dearly loves. In any other scenario, Rulers would have killed Sung II-Hwan for disobeying their orders and found someone else to kill Jin-Woo. However, in the Japan Crisis Arc, the Rulers witness Jin-Woo killing Legia, the Monarch of the Beginning.

Sung II-Hwan will play a crucial role in the story, especially during the Monarchs War Arc. He observes Jin-Woo go through several enemies from a distance, but he eventually comes forward to save his son from Querehsha and Rakan. Jin-Woo fights against Querehsha on his own and wins the fight, but he loses to Rakan, the Monarch of Fangs. However, just before Rakan can land a killing blow on Jin-Woo, his heart starts beating again. At this moment, Ashborn grants his full powers to Jin-Woo to resurrect him. Sung II-Hwan then decides to save his son from Rakan and the remaining Monarchs.

I’m sorry…..that I couldn’t be a great Father – Sung II-Hwan to Jin-Woo

While Jin-Woo is unconscious, Sung II-Hwan fights against Rakan and Sillad without any help. He stalls the two Monarchs long enough for Jin-Woo to regain consciousness. However, Sung II-Hwan loses one of his arms in the process and flees the scene once Jin-Woo takes over the fight.

While Sung II-Hwan prepares to die all alone, Jin-Woo arrives and confronts his father. After years of waiting, Jin-Woo finally learns what happened to his father. The reunion is short-lived, though, as II-Hwan’s body turns into dust and light after he’s done telling his tale.
